  • This paper focuses on a performance analysis model for optimizing the freight terminal design and layout using AutoMod simulator and numerical analysis. We developed a model to analyze the freiht terminal performance per unit time and the material handling cost based on both throughput and waiting due to conjestion. We developed computer program for this model and some sample results by both numerical method and AutoMod simulator are compared.

  • In the case of a floating offshore structure such as FPSO(Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading unit), many equipment should be installed in the limited space, as compared with an onshore structure. Recently, the requirement for an optimal layout method of the structure has been raised. Thus, a layout method of the floating offshore structure was proposed in this study. First, an optimization problem for layout design was mathematically formulated, and then an optimization algorithm was implemented based on the genetic algorithm in order to solve it. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, it was applied to examples ofFPSO topsides and an offshore wind turbine. As a result, it was shown that the proposed method can be applied to layout design of the floating offshore structure.

  • The size and layout of user interface components need to be optimally designed in terms of reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility in order for efficient and effective use of products. The present study develops an ergonomic design method which optimizes the size and layout of user interface components using adaptive genetic algorithm. The developed design method determines a near-optimal design which maximizes the aggregated score of 4 ergonomic design criteria (reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility). The adaptive genetic algorithm used in the present study finds a near-optimum by automatically adjusting the key parameter (probability of mutation) of traditional genetic algorithm according to the characteristic of current solutions. Since the adaptive mechanism partially helps to overcome the local optimality problem, the probability of finding the near-optimum has been substantially improved. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed design method, the present study applied it to the user interface design for a portable wireless communication radio.

  • In this paper, we deal with a process and layout design for producing a planned amount of Sikhye in a given limited time period under a reasonable production schedule. We represent a Sikhye production line as a vector N, the element of which denotes the number of tanks required in each process and our objective is to find an appropriate vector which minimizes the total investment cost. We suggest a systematic method for finding an appropriate N and an appropriate layout to N. In detail, first, we decide the required sequence of processes and the required operations for each process and we estimate standard operating times. Second, constructing a precedence diagram, we find a critical path in order to reduce the total production lead time for a batch of Sikhye. Third, given a limited N space, we manage to construct manually each production schedule using both the processing times of the critical operations and transfer times. Finally, we find an optimal vector N which gives a minimum investment cost and meets both the time constraint and quantity constraint. In addition, with the estimated relative size of each tank, we suggest an appropriate conceptual layout design including an expansion area for future demands, based on the span technique used in the field of architectural design.

  • In this age of "Information", many people consider it a deterrent to information flow to provide a hierarchy with private rooms in a modern office layout. There are others, however, who insist that visual and acoustical privacy are more important than any other design factor in achieving higher productivity. The debate may never end, but the partitioned open plan, which is a new form of the vast open plan, has merits of each concept - open and closed layout. Consequently, office design has dramatically shifted to partitioned open planning, with shorter, temporary walls or partitions, originally intended for increasing privacy and diminishing hierarchy, yet still keeping flexibility in spatial organization. The introduction of low-level partitioned spaces in an office layout, however, produces a complicated lighting design problem. Obviously, accurately predicted daylighting performance data are needed not only for daylighting design but for artificial lighting system design. Scale models of 12 sets of unit partitioned spaces are constructed and extensive scale model measurements of both daylight and reflected sunlight have been performed within an artificial sky simulator. The prototype-building interior is modeled with different partition configurations, each of which is modeled using the different envelope geometry and exterior configurations, and then the variations in interior light levels are estimated. The result indicates that partitioned spaces employed in an open plan of modern offices still offer a large potential for daylighting and energy saving as well. Much of the savings may derive from the cumulative effect of reflected sunlight. Optimal design for building envelope geometry and exterior configuration promises additional savings.

  • In case of VLSI design, the shuffle-exchange graph is useful for optimal layout. HOEY and LEISERSON proposed the method of drawing a N-nodes shuffle-exchange graph on O(N2/log N) layout area by using the complex plane digram. [2] In this paper, a new algorithm for drawing the shuffle-exchange graph is proposed. This algorithm is not by using the complex plane diabram, but the table of e decimal represented nodes of shuffle-edge relations. And the structural properties for optimal layout of the graph are summarized and verified. By using this more simplified algorithm, a FORTRAN program which can be treated faster is written. Aimed near optimal shuffle-exchange graphs are printed out by giving inputs` the number of nodes.

  • Optimal engineering design is challenging because nonlinear objective functions need to be evaluated in a high-dimensional space. This paper presents a data-mining aided optimal design method. The method is employed in designing an optimal multi-station fixture layout. Its benefit is demonstrated by a comparison with currently available optimization methods.

  • It is necessary that End-of-life Vehicle (ELV) should be recycled from the point of view of environmental preservation and resource recycling. This paper deals with two issues. The first one is the basic functional construction and plant layout of the ELV dismantling system that can maximize the reusability of parts and the recyclability of materials. The second issue is the development of a simulation model which can be used to estimate the performance of the layout design. The simulator has been interfaced with an interactive layout design system, and used to effectively determine an optimal layout design of the ELV dismantling system.

  • The nesting of two-dimensional patterns onto a given raw sheet has applications in a number industries. It is a common problem often faced by designers in the shipbuilding, garment making, blanking die design, glass and wood industries. This paper presents a multi-stage layout approach for nesting two-dimensional patterns by using artificial intelligence techniques with a relatively short computation time. The raw material with irregular boundaries and internal defects which must be considered in various cases of nesting was also investigated in this study. The proposed nesting approach consists of two stages : initial layout stage and layout improvement stage. The initial layout configuration is achieved by the self-organizing assisted layout(SOAL) algorithm while in the layout improvement stage, the simulated annealing(SA) is adopted for a finer optimization.

  • Shipyard design and equipments layout problem, which are directly linked with the productivity of ship production, is an important issue serving as reference data of production plan for later massive production of ships. So far in many cases, design of a shipyard has been relying on the experienced engineers in shipbuilding, resulting in sporadic and poorly organized processes. And thus, economic losses as well as trials and errors in that accord have been pointed out as inevitable problems. This paper extracts a checklist of major elements to fine tune the shipbuilding yard designing process and the input/output data based on the simulation based shipbuilding yard layout designing framework and methodology proposed in existing researches, and executed initial architecture to develop software that integrates all the relevant processes and designing tools. In this course, both user request and design data by the steps are arranged and organized in the proposed layout design template form. In addition, simulation is done based on the parent shipbuilding process planning and scheduling data of the ship product, shipbuilding process and work stage facilities that constitute shipbuilding yard, and design items are verified and optimized with the layout and equipment list showing optimal process planning and scheduling effects. All the contents of this paper are based on simulation based shipbuilding yard layout designing methodology, and initial architecture processes are based on object oriented development methodology and system engineering methods.
