  • Currently, a grouting method that minimizes damage to the reservoir embankment by injecting solidification agent at low pressure is commonly used to ensure waterproofing and safety of the embankment, but the use of solidification agents can cause issues, such as a decrease in durability and a lack of clear method for determining the mixing ratio. In this study, when the base ground and solidification agent were stirred and mixed at various weight mixing ratios, the permeability coefficient and strength of the mixture were confirmed through laboratory tests, and the optimal mixing ratio was suggested through analysis of the test results. The specimen for the laboratory test was produced considering the mixing ratio of the solidification agent. The specimen for the permeability coefficient test was tested by producing one each of cohesionless and cohesive soil for a mixing amount of 1.5 kN/m3 of solidification agent, and the permeability test results confirmed that the water barrier performance was secured below the permeability coefficient value required by various design criteria. A total of 24 specimens for the strength test were produced, 3 for each of 5 mixing amounts for cohesive soil and 3 mixing amounts for cohesionless soil. The strength test results showed that the uniaxial compressive strength tends to increase linearly with increasing curing time for both cohesionless soil and cohesive soil when the mixing amount is less than 2.0 kN/m3. Therefore, the optimal mixing ratio applied to the site is determined to be mixing amount of 1.5 kN/m3 and 2.0 kN/m3. Finally, numerical analysis reflecting test results was conducted on design case for improvement projects for aging reservoirs embankment to verify the water barrier performance and safety improvement effects.

  • The objective of this study was to determine optimal lysine requirement of lactating Mong Cai sows and their piglets. An experiment was conducted using 30 Mong Cai sows in a factorial randomized design with 5 dietary total lysine levels (0.60, 0.70, 0.85, 1.0 and 1.15%) for one-week pre-partum and 5 dietary total lysine levels (0.60, 0.75, 0.90, 1.05 and 1.2%) for lactation diets. Mong Cai sows were about 1 to 2 years old and had an initial body weight of 120 kg (sd = 2.5) after farrowing. Sows were restrictively fed 1.7 kg feed during gestation and were fed ad libitum during lactation. Diets of sows contained about 12% CP during pregnancy and about 14% CP for the lactation period. DE concentration of the diets ranged between 12.5-13.0 MJ of DE. Water was supplied at up to 8 liters per sow per day in a basin. Studied traits were related to both sows and their progeny. Sows were weighed at 107 days of gestation, after farrowing and at weaning. Sow back-fat depth was measured at 110 days of gestation, after farrowing, at 21 days of lactation and at weaning. Number of piglets born, at 24 h after birth, at 21 days of age and at weaning were recorded. Piglets were weighte at birth, at 21 days and at weaning. Supplying lysine one week pre-partum had no effect on the number of piglets born nor litter weight at birth (p = 0.776 and p = 0.224). A positive effect of increasing dietary lysine level during lactation from 0.60 to 1.20% was observed with regard to less sow weight loss, and increased piglet weight at 21 days and at weaning. The level of lysine that resulted in the lowest sow backfat loss and the highest weaned piglet weight was 1.05%; this may be the optimum level of lysine for the diet of lactating Mong Cai sows. At this lysine level, the number of weaned piglets was also highest.

  • For swiftness and economic feasibility of parcel delivery, optimal location of mail exchanging centers considering not only section delivery distance but also some weights like the number of delivery vehicles are necessary. In this paper, a mechanism with section delivery distance and vehicle number for locating of mail distribution centers which connect some mail centers of major cities in Republic Korea by applying GOSST theory is proposed. This mechanism for locating mail exchange centers can make the total delivery distance of postal matters less than not only present method which assigns Daejun as mail exchange center, but also Steiner tree method which does not consider weights like number of delivery vehicles. The mechanism is good for protecting the environment as well as rapid and economic delivery. In experiment, the proposed mechanism could curtail total delivery distance by 2.52 percentages compared with Steiner tree method and by 6.66 percentages compared with present method. The mechanism may be used in electric power transmission routing, distribution line topology design, power relay station locating where various voltages and other weights should be considered.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal joint positions which can minimize distresses of concrete pavement containing box culvert with horizontally skewed angles. METHODS : The concrete pavement containing the box culvert with different skewed angles and soil cover depths was modeled by 3 dimensional finite element method. The contact boundary condition was used between concrete and soil structures in addition to the nonlinear material property of soil in the finite element model. A dynamic analysis was performed by applying the self weight of pavement, negative temperature gradient of slab, and moving vehicle load simultaneously. RESULTS : In case of zero skewed angle ($0^{\circ}$), the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint was positioned directly over side of box culvert. In case there was a skewed angle, the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint passed the intersection between side of the box culvert and longitudinal centerline of slab. The magnitude of the maximum tensile stress converged to a constant value regardless the joint position from 3m of soil cover depth at all of the horizontally skewed angles. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and accurate design of the concrete pavement containing the box culvert can be possible based on the research results.

  • One of the hottest challenges in automotive industry is related to weight reduction in sheet metal forming processes, in order to produce a high quality metal part with minimal material cost. Stamping is the most widely used sheet metal forming process; but its implementation comes with several fabrication flaws such as springback and failure. A global and simple approach to circumvent these unwanted process drawbacks consists in optimizing the initial blank shape with innovative methods. The aim of this paper is to introduce an efficient methodology to deal with complex, computationally expensive multicriteria optimization problems. Our approach is based on the combination of methods to capture the Pareto Front, approximate criteria (to save computational costs) and global optimizers. To illustrate the efficiency, we consider the stamping of an industrial workpiece as test-case. Our approach is applied to the springback and failure criteria. To optimize these two criteria, a global optimization algorithm was chosen. It is the Simulated Annealing algorithm hybridized with the Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation in order to gain in time and in precision. The multicriteria problems amounts to the capture of the Pareto Front associated to the two criteria. Normal Boundary Intersection and Normalized Normal Constraint Method are considered for generating a set of Pareto-optimal solutions with the characteristic of uniform distribution of front points. The computational results are compared to those obtained with the well-known Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. The results show that our proposed approach is efficient to deal with the multicriteria shape optimization of highly non-linear mechanical systems.

  • The objective of this study is to find the optimal thrust condition and wing loading of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing aircraft through a single engine failure analysis during landing approach and an analysis of transition flight. The aircraft analysis modules used in the study are based on the aircraft synthesis program. To achieve the computing infrastructure for aircraft design and analysis, the EMDIOS was employed as a design framework, which is a semi-completed application program and ready to customize. Simulation results reveal the most critical height at the event of single engine failure is approximately 40 ft. And, in order to avoid a significant loss in altitude during the transition, the thrust to weight ratio must be kept high, while both the engine tilt speed and the wing loading must be kept low, as confirmed by the analysis results.

  • The initial urban railway was only required to perform its role as means of transportation. As the time of staying in an underground platform was extended, it has been faced with the issues of environmental improvement as a living space. Therefore, the sliding automatic door, which is the basis of the screen door, is used widely for large distribution stores, hospitals, restaurants, and public offices for customers' convenience and as a convenient method to control access. Therefore, screen doors are required for the purpose of customers' convenience, securing safety, establishing pleasant station buildings, and energy savings. It would be also necessary to develop the optimal design technology for a screen door system through the design of element parts and to ensure reliability. Therefore, this paper calculated, interpreted, and verified the theoretical weight of the composition parts to verify the design drive hardness of the motor for screen doors necessary for the safety of subways.

  • In practical design process, designer needs to find an optimal solution by using full factorial discrete combination, rather than by using optimization algorithm considering continuous design variables. So, ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) based on an orthogonal array, i.e. Taguchi method, has been widely used in most parts of industry area. However, the Taguchi method is limited for the shape optimization by using CAE, because the multi-level and multi-objective optimization can't be carried out simultaneously. In this study, a combined method was proposed taking into account of multi-level computational orthogonal array and TOPSIS(Technique for Order preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), which is known as a classical method of multiple attribute decision making and enables to solve various decision making or selection problems in an aspect of multi-objective optimization. The proposed method was applied to a case study of the multi-level shape optimization of lower arm used to automobile parts, and the design space was explored via an efficient application of the related CAE tools. The multi-level shape optimization was performed sequentially by applying both of the neural network model generated from seven-level four-factor computational orthogonal array and the TOPSIS. The weight and maximum stress of the lower arm, as the objective functions for the multi-level shape optimization, showed an improvement of 0.07% and 17.89%, respectively. In addition, the number of CAE carried out for the shape optimization was only 55 times in comparison to full factorial method necessary to 2,401 times.

  • The supercavitating vehicle is an underwater vehicle that is surrounded almost completely by a supercavity to reduce hydrodynamic drag substantially. Since the cruise speed of the vehicle is much higher than that of conventional submarines, the drag force is huge and a buckling may occur. The buckling phenomenon is analyzed in this study through static and dynamic approaches. Critical buckling load and pressure as well as buckling mode shapes are calculated using static buckling analysis and a stability map is obtained from dynamic buckling analysis. When the finite element method (FEM) is used for the buckling analysis, the solver requires a linear static solver and an eigenvalue solver. In this study, these two solvers are integrated and a consolidated buckling analysis module is constructed. Furthermore, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is combined in the buckling analysis module to perform a design optimization computation of a simplified supercavitating vehicle. The simplified configuration includes cylindrical shell structure with three stiffeners. The target for the design optimization process is to minimize total weight while maintaining the given structure buckling-free.

  • In this paper, a lightweight design of the spar cap of 2MW wind turbine blade was carried out using the ply reduction ratio (PRR) and CFRP with a trade-off study. The spar cap is one of the most critical factor in determining the mechanical performance of the blade. Tsai-Wu and Puck fracture theory were used to determine the fracture. As a result, the CFRP composite material could be lighter in terms of weight by about 30% than GFRP composite material under the same conditions. Based on the analytical results, we derive the optimal value of the laminate thickness of the composite material and present the structural performance improvement and the lightweight design result.
