  • The optimal operation condition of gasifier is one of the most important parameters to increase efficiency and reliability in IGCC plant. Also the prediction of the syngas composition and quantity must be predicted to carry out process design of the gasification plant. However, the gasifier process licensor are protective with information on process design and optimal gasifier design conditions. So, the most of process studies in the engineering company for gasification plant have carried out to look for key parameters and optimal design conditions using several prediction methods. In this paper, we present the estimated preliminary optimal operation condition of the 300MW Demonstration Entrain Flow Gasifier using Aspen Plus. The gasifier operation temperature considering slag flow was predicted by FactSage software and Annen Model.

  • As a basic study of optimal design conditions of refrigeration systems, the reversed carnot cycle, including heat transfer processes through the finite temperature differences between heat sources and the working fluids, is analyzed with the capacity of heat exchanger as a design parameter. When the temperatures of heat sources and the input work are fixed as constants, the optimal design condition is obtained as an optimum ratio of capacities of heat exchangers, which is exactly unity when the exergy output and effectiveness are maximum. In addition, the optimum ratio is slightly increased from unity as the irreversibility of the cycle increases.

  • The objectives of the present study are to develop a systematic method rather than a conventional trial-and-error method for an optimal shape design using a mathematical theory, and to apply it to engineering problems. In the present study, an optimal condition for a minimum pressure loss in a two-dimensional curved duct flow is derived and then an optimal shape of the curved duct is designed from the optimal condition. In the design procedure, one needs to solve the adjoint Navier-Stokes equations which are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations and the cost function. Therefore, a computer code of solving both the Navier-Stokes and adjoint Navier-Stokes equations together with an automatic grid generation is developed. In a curved duct flow, flow separation occurs due to an adverse pressure gradient, resulting in an additional pressure loss. Optimal shapes of a curved duct are obtained at three different Reynolds numbers of 100, 300 and 800, respectively. In the optimally shaped curved ducts, the separation region does not exist or is significantly reduced, and thus the pressure loss along the curved duct is significantly reduced.

  • Probabilistic approaches are applied to the problem of groundwater remediation design to consider the risk of design and heterogeneity of real condition. Hydraulic conductivity fields are generated by two methods. First, the homogeneous domains which have the hydraulic conductivity with log-normal distribution are constructed by using Latin Hypercube method. Second, random fields with a certain spatial correlation are also generated. The optimal solutions represented by cumulative distribution function (CDF) of relative cost are calculated by three different manners. The one uses the homogeneous domains with the optimal design of base condition. It shows that ver)'wide range of cost and the influences of different penalty values. The other one uses the random field with same design and shows narrow range of cost. These CDF can reflect on the risk of optimal solution in a simple exampie condition and be effective in estimating the cost of groundwater remediation.

  • This study is concerned with the optimum design of reinforced concrete frame structure with multi-stories and multi-bays by Limit State Design Method aimed to establish a synthetical optimal method that can simultaneously acomplish structural analysis and sectional desig. For optimum solution, the Successive Linear Programming known as effective to nonlinear optimization problem: including both multi-design variables and mulit-constrained condition was applied. The developed algorithm was applied to an actual structure and reached following results. 1)The developed algorithm was rvey effective converging to an optimal solution with 3 to 5 iteration. 2)An optimal solution was showed when bending moment redistribution factor a was 0.80. 3)The column was, regardless of story, controlled by the long column when unbraced, while in case of braced column, it is designed with 3 short column controlled by thrust and bending moment, and the supporting condition had little effect on the optimization results.

  • Purpose: In this paper we present a case study of developing fast curing adhesives for insulation material of LNG carriers using an extreme vertices design with four mixture components. Three material properties are considered - shear strength, viscosity, and tensile strength. In the optimization experiment, we used hardness instead of tensile strength due to shortage of specimens. Methods: We employ four-factor extreme vertices design with 19 runs and desirability function approach for simultaneously optimizing three responses. After selecting optimal condition of the mixture components, we do confirmation experiments to verify the reproducibility of the optimal condition under manufacturing circumstance. Results: Simultaneous optimal condition for the three responses, that is, shear strength, viscosity, and harness is obtained. At the optimal condition, confirmation experiments are executed in manufacturing circumstance. The variation for the shear strength is not satisfactory, which is due to the variation of the humidity. Conclusion: At the optimal condition three material properties are satisfactory. To reduce the variability for the shear strength, robust design is needed.

  • In the preliminary design stage of Prestressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder Bridges, the design factors(including depth, thickness of web, and jacking force) decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect the final design factors. So there is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To aim at an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design program has been developed by using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME(PSC Bridge analysis program) in these studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design factors by introducing the optimal design techniques of PSC box girder bridge design. The objective function for optimal design is material cost of box girder and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The optimal design techniques used the Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) with performing the optimal design program. In this study, We designed unprismatic section bridge and prismatic section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design program developed in this study. By analyzing the results we suggested the practical form of tendon's layout comparing the optimal desingns on the basis of each tendon's layout.

  • In this paper we study the estimation problem of individual weights of objects using an A-optimal chemical balance weighing design. We assume that in this model errors are correlated and they have the same variances. The lower bound of tr$(X'G^{-1}X)^{-1}$ is obtained and a necessary and sufficient condition for this lower bound to be attained is given. There is given new construction method of A-optimal chemical balance weighing design.

  • To improve quality of the ground surface, we have to consider a number of parameters. But it is difficult to make experiment with many parameters. Most of all experiments try to search optimal grinding condition with conservative factors such as feed rate, depth of cut, wheel rotating speed, etc. But This paper attempts to view the significance of some different factors effecting on the surface roughness by introducing helical scan grinding method and material removal rate. The design of experiment is used to find the optimal grinding condition which minimizes the surface roughness value bout optical glass material. To analyze experimental results, ANOVA(ANalysis of VAriation) is used. Discussion on the result about helical scan grinding is also given.

  • In this study we performed optimal design for the vehicle mechanical component which satisfies both a sufficient stiffness and a lightweight using topology optimization technique. The FEA for the initial model before optimal design is performed by ABAQUS/Standard. And, we suggest optimization model using the topology optimal design program Altair Optisturuct 3.6. The FEA of optimal design is performed under the same condition as the initial model. We performed the FEA fur the topology optimal design model and verified the validity of the present method.
