  • In this paper we propose a fast and precise control algorithm for a mobile robot, which aims at the self-tuning control applying two multi-layered neural networks to the structure of computed torque method. Through this algorithm, the nonlinear terms of external disturbance caused by variable task environments and dynamic model errors are estimated and compensated in real time by a long term neural network which has long learning period to extract the non-linearity globally. A short term neural network which has short teaming period is also used for determining optimal gains of PID compensator in order to come over the high frequency disturbance which is not known a priori, as well as to maintain the stability. To justify the global effectiveness of this algorithm where each of the long term and short term neural networks has its own functions, simulations are peformed. This algorithm can also be utilized to come over the serious shortcoming of neural networks, i.e., inefficiency in real time.

  • This study aimed at developing and evaluating performance of the two logics for respectively operating two-position- and variable-heating systems. Both logics control the heating system and openings of the double skin facade buildings in an integrated manner. Artificial neural network models were applied for the predictive and adaptive controls in order to optimally condition the indoor thermal environment. Numerical computer simulation methods using the MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) and TRNSYS (Transient Systems Simulation) were employed for the performance tests of the logics in the test module. Analysis on the test results revealed that the variable control logic provided more comfortable and stable temperature conditions with the increased comfortable period and the decreased standard deviation from the center of the comfortable range. In addition, the amount of heat supply to the indoor space was significantly reduced by the variable control logic. Thus, it can be concluded that the optimal control method using the artificial neural network model can work more effectively when it is applied to the variable heating systems.

  • This paper presents a design method of deadbeat controller for DC motor driving a rotational system with gear. The deadbeat-response design developed for control system of a sampled continuous-data process does not guarantee zero intersampling ripples, but the proposed deadbeat control system that consists of the integral controller and the full-order state observer, and zero-order hold using in continuous systems, has many advantages such as an output response without the ripples and reaching the steady state without error after a given sampling period and faster settling time than the optimal control system in the same sampling period. The results of a case study through matlab simulation are shown that the efficiency of the proposed controller for DC motor driving a rotational system with gear is verified by comparing with optimal controller etc.

  • Cultivar Yeollow Special A, the most leading Korean economic leaf tobacco in Korea, were field-cultivated in four different localities of Korea for the period of two years (1970 and 1971) and sprayed at varied levels of 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (CEPA) for foliar application few days after topping. While no striking difference in leaf yield by weight was obtained among the treatments when compared with control, leaf quality as expressed for shipment price in won tended when compared with control, leaf quality as expressed for shipment price in won tended to improve. The treated leaves with 300 to 900 ppm of CEPA (approximately 140 1/acre of 500 ppm) not only showed yellowing and accelerated maturity to pick 4 to 5 days with practicable optimal level earlier than control, but also speeded up to take nearly with practicable optimal level earlier than control, but also speeded up to take nearly last half of the total time required for the five stages of flue-curing. It is therefore considered that CEPA is as effective maturity-accelerating agent and useful as known for other solanaceous plants showing climacteric stage respiration, and discussions were made about physiological actions of ethylene gas released from CEPA at plant tissues sprayed.

  • Control strategy and corresponding parameters have significant impacts on the overall technical and economic characteristics of composite energy storage systems (CESS). A better control strategy and optimized control parameters can be used to improve the economic and technical characteristics of CESS, and determine the maximum power and stored energy capacity of CESS. A novel coordinated control strategy is proposed considering the coordination of various energy storage systems in CESS. To describe the degree of coordination, a new index, i.e. state of charge coordinated response margin of supercapacitor energy storage system, is presented. Based on the proposed control strategy and index, an optimization model was formulated to minimize the total equivalent cost in a given period for two purposes. The one is to obtain optimal control parameters of an existing CESS, and the other is to obtain the integrated optimal results of control parameters, maximum power and stored energy capacity for CESS in a given period. Case studies indicate that the developed index, control strategy and optimization model can be extensively applied to optimize the economic and technical characteristics of CESS. In addition, impacts of control parameters are discussed in detail.

  • It is widely known that optimal control techniques are useful to measure the performance of macroeconomic policy. This paper examines how the method could be applies them to the evaluation of the public investment expenditures conducted by the local government of Choongbook Province in Korea. The numerical example illustrates the usefulness of the methods for the evaluation of the regional economic policies suggesting the main findings as follows: (1) If the local government of Choongbook Province had increased the public investment expenditures allowing the budget deficits for the first three to four years during the period between 1985 and 1990, its GRDP would have early risen to the ratio of more than three percent of Korea's total GDP. (2) The additonal welfare losses incurred by not following the optimal policy were 0.191 in 1986, 0.607 in 1987, 1.585 in 1988, and 0.132 in 1989, indicating that the public investment policy proves to be the best in 1989 and the worst in 1988.

  • Due to the randomness of reservoir inflow and supply demand it is not easy to establish an optimal reservoir operation rule. However, the operation rule can be derived by the implicit stochastic optimization approach using synthetic inflow data with some demand satisfied. In this study the optimal reservoir operation which was reasonably formulated as Linear Tracking model for maximizing the hydro-energy of seven reservoirs system in the Han river was performed by use of the optimal control theory. Here the operation model made to satisfy the 2001st year demand in the capital area inputted the synthetic inflow data generated by multi-site Markov model. Based on the regressions and statistic analyses of the optimal operation results, monthly reservoir operation rules were developed with the seasonal probabilities of the reservoir stages. The comparatively larger dams which would have more controllability such as Hwacheon, Soyanggang, and Chungju had better regressions between the storages and outflows. The effectiveness of the rules was verified by the simulation during actually operating period.period.

  • Purpose : The study applied control strategy to reduce through optimal control and operation of pump by applying control on variable speed to the circulation pump of HVAC system in the office building. The study has the purpose to review validity of control on variable speed as ESMs(Energy Saving Measures) and establish the control technology on variable speed pump. The study performed reduction analysis of building energy and economic evaluation of pump through energy effectiveness control strategy of HVAC system. Method: The study sought possible reduction through energy control strategy which can provide proper flow fitting to building load by applying control on variable speed pump. The study applied control strategy to reduce through pressure differential set-point control and operation of pump by applying control on variable speed to the circulation pump of HVAC system in the office building. Result : The results showed that about 16-35% of pump energy could be saved by using these optimal control strategies. • To ensure safe port operations around the world, it is important to solve mooring problems. In particular, the many ports that face open seas have difficulties with long-period waves. As a countermeasure, the installation of a breakwater is proposed for mooring safety. However, this often cannot be put into practice because of financial issues. Instead, port terminals control berthing schedules with weather forecasting. However, mooring problems remain unsolved, because of inaccurate wave forecasting. To quantify the current situation, numerical simulations are presented with ship motions, fender deflections, and rope tensions. In addition, novel simulations for mooring ropes are proposed considering tension, friction, bending fatigue, and temperature. With this novel simulation, the optimal mooring method in terms of safety and economic efficiency was confirmed. In terms of safety, the optimal mooring method is verified to minimize dangerous mooring situations. Moreover, the optimal mooring method shows economic benefits and efficiency. It can help to reinforce the safety of port terminals and improve the efficiency of port operations.
