Optimum micro dimple configuration on the elastomer seal surface (탄성중합체 시일 표면의 미세 딤플에 대한 최적설계)

  • The seal plays a role in preventing oil leakage when the lip and the rotating shaft come into contact with the fluid and air pressure. Recently, micro dimples or micro pockets are processed and used on the lubrication surfaces of thrust bearings, mechanical bearings, and piston rings. Compared to a smooth surface, micro dimples reduce friction and increase the life of parts. This paper analyzed various kinds of micro dimple shapes on the sealing surface, i.e. circle, rectangle, triangle, and trapezoid. For this purpose, Introduced the design of experiments to work out a micro dimple configuration, unlikely to be damaged from cracks and low in contact stress. As a result, the triangular dimple showed the best results. Optimal factors were dimple size 0.15 mm, dimple depth 0.0383 mm, dimple density 40%, and the maximum equivalent stress was 9.1455 MPa, and the maximum contact pressure was 9.6612 MPa. This paper analyzed the optimal shape of dimples by finite element analysis. As a research project, experiments and comparative analysis of micro dimple shapes are needed.

  • The Distribution Automation System(DAS) Master Station(MS) is the core of the system, which has the functions of supervising, data acquisition, processing and man-machine interface. In this paper, we suggested the optimal configuration of the medium/small scale DAS MS in accordance with the consideration of various requirements such as reliability, scalability flexibility, etc.

  • An experimental investigation of two-dimensional steady natural convection cooling in a vertical open top cavity with conducting side walls of finite thickness is presented. The various heat-generating discrete heaters are located on one vertical wall of the cavity. When each heater dissipates different amount of power, the purpose of the work is to obtain the optimal array condition of the heaters. The four cases of non-uniform heating conditions are considered. The temperature fields in the cavity were visualized by the interferometer and local temperatures of the vertical wall were measured by thermocouples. The heaters were arranged in two configurations: flush-mounted on a vertical wall or protruding from the wall about 4.5 mm. The vertical wall was constructed out of copper or epoxy-resin sheet. Experiments have been conducted for air with constant Prandtl number(Pr=0.7), the aspect ratio of 4.6, 7.5, 9.5, power input in the range of 0.9 W ~ 4.2 W. For the enhancement of the cooling effectiveness, the upper and lower of vertical wall would give the better position for the heaters of higher heat flux.

  • Recently, focus has been drawn on natural refrigerants due to increasing concern on global warming. As a consequence, CO2 systems such as a heat pump water heater using CO2 as a refrigerant are rapidly growing on the market. Currently, rolling piston rotary compressors are widely used for CO2 heating and/or refrigeration systems. There are several ways of realizing gas compression structure. They are single stage compression with single cylinder, single stage compression with two cylinders, and two stage compression with two cylinders. In this paper, computer simulation program which was validated for a single stage rotary compressor with one cylinder has been extended for a single stage, two cylinder rotary type. Numerical investigation has been made on optimal design for the cylinder configuration using the extended simulation program. For a single stage two cylinder rotary compressor having a displacement volume of 4 cc for each cylinder, compressor efficiency has been found to be maximum when the cylinder radius and height are 31mm and 10mm, respectively.

  • The configuration such as series, parallel and k-out-of-n of a repairable system directly affects its reliability. The maintenance strategy can also affect the overall performance of the system. The objective of this work is to investigate the possible trade-off between the configuration of a repairable k-out-of-n system and its maintenance strategy. The redundancy is considered to be the design decision variables, whereas the preventive maintenance period is considered to be the maintenance decision variables. The optimization model is used to minimize the overall life cycle cost associated with the system, considering constraint on reliability. Finally, genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal values for the decision variables. The result is compared with optimal values for considering redundancy and maintenance respectively.

Power System Enhanced Monitoring through Strategic PMU Placement Considering Degree of Criticality of Buses

  • This paper proposes a method for optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) considering system configuration and its attributes during the planning phase of PMU deployment. Each bus of the system is assessed on four diverse attributes; namely, redundancy of measurements, rotor angle and frequency monitoring of generator buses, reactive power deficiency, and maximum loading limit under transmission line outage contingency, and a consolidated 'degree of criticality' is determined using Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The major contribution of the proposed work is the development of modified objective function which incorporates values of the degree of criticality of buses. The problem is formulated as maximization of the aggregate degree of criticality of the system. The resultant PMU configuration extends complete observability of the system and majority of the PMUs are located on critical buses. As budgetary restrictions on utilities may not allow installation PMUs even at optimal locations in a single phase, multi-horizon deployment of PMUs is also addressed. The proposed approach is tested on IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 30-bus, New England (NE) 39-bus, IEEE 57-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems and compared with some existing methods.

  • When a body with slant angle behind its shoulder is moving at a high speed, the turbulent motion around the afterbody is generally associated with the flow separation, and determines the normal component of the drag. By changing the slant angle of the afterbody, the drag coefficients can be changed, drastically. Understanding and controlling the turbulent separated flows has significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In this paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies, using slant angle. By understanding the structure of the turbulent flow around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies is designed to reduce the drag of body, and the nonlinear effects, due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows, are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.

Understanding and control of the turbulent separated flows are of significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In the present paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies with slant angle. By basis of understanding the structure of turbulent flaw around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies are designed to reduce the drag of body and the nonlinear effects due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.

Optimal control approach to resolve the redundancy of robot manipulators

  • Most of the control problem is for the redundant manipulators use the pseudo-inverse control, thit is, the redundancy is resolved by the pseudo-inverse of the Jacobian matrix and then the controller is designed based on this resolution. However, this pseudo-inverse control has some problems when the redundant robot repeats the cyclic tasks. This is because the pseudo-inverse resolution is a local solution that generates the different configurations of the robot arm for the same hand position. Therefore it is necessary to find the global solution that maintains the optimal configuration of the robot for the repetitive tasks. In this paper, we want to propose a redundancy resolution method by the optimal theory that uses the calculus of variation. The problem formulations are : first to convert the optimal resolution problem to an optimal control problem and then to resolve the redundancy using the necessary conditions of optimal control.
