In this paper, we study scheduling schemes for two-user two-way wireless relaying systems. Two transmission modes are considered: point-to-point direct transmission and two-way amplify-and-forward relaying. An optimal scheduling scheme that opportunistically selects the best transmission mode for each user is proposed to minimize the sum bit error rate (BER). The performance lower bound of the optimal scheduling scheme is analyzed, and closed-form expression of the lower-bound BER is derived. However, for optimal scheduling, the scheduler requires the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) of all links. To reduce the feedback information of CSI, we also propose a suboptimal scheduling scheme that selects the transmission mode using only the CSI of two direct links. Simulation results show that there are 4 dB to 8 dB gains for the proposed optimal and suboptimal schemes over the fixed direct transmission and fixed two-way relayed transmission scheme. The performance gap between the optimal and suboptimal scheduling schemes is small, which implies a good trade-off between implementation complexity and system performance.

In this paper, we propose an optimal multi-hop transmission scheme to maximize the end-to-end data rate from the source to the destination node in a wireless powered communication network. The frame structure for multi-hop transmission is presented to transmit multi-hop data while harvesting energy. Then, the transmission time of each node that maximizes the end-to-end transmission rate is determined through mathematical analysis in consideration of different harvested energy and link quality among nodes. We derive an optimization problem through system modeling of the considered wireless powered multi-hop transmission, and prove that there is a global optimal solution by verifying the convexity of this optimization problem. This analysis facilitates to find the optimal solution of the considered optimization problem. The proposed optimal multi-hop transmission scheme maximizes the end-to-end rate by allocating the transmission time for each node that equalizes the transmission rates of all links.

In CVT vehicle, the engine speed is completely decoupled from the vehicle speed within the range from maximum transmission ratio to minimum transmission ratio. This allows the engine to operate in optimal state(e.g. best fuel economy or maximum power mode.) In this study, the CVT control algorithm for optimal operation of engine is suggested. In order to implement the real time digital control of electro-hydraulic CVT system, a software called CVTCON has been developed. CVTCON also includes the CVT operation module, (2) system test module, (3) system control module and (4) data management module. By using the CVTCON and the electro-hydraulic CVT system, two modes of experiments were carried out: constant throttle opening mode and acceleration mode. From the experimental result, it was found that the algorithm suggested in this study showed optimal operation of the CVT system.

This paper analyzes the nodes deployment optimization problem in energy constrained wireless sensor networks, which multi-hop cooperative beamforming (CB) based cooperative-multi-input-single-output (CMISO) transmission is adopted to reduce the energy consumption. Firstly, we establish the energy consumption models for multi-hop SISO, multi-hop DSTBC based CMISO, multi-hop CB based CMISO transmissions under random nodes deployment. Then, we minimize the energy consumption by searching the optimal nodes deployment for the three transmissions. Furthermore, numerical results present the optimal nodes deployment parameters for the three transmissions. Energy consumption of the three transmissions are compared under optimal nodes deployment, which shows that CB based CMISO transmission consumes less energy than SISO and DSTBC based CMISO transmissions. Meanwhile, under optimal nodes deployment, the superiorities of CB based CMISO transmission over SISO and DSTBC based CMISO transmissions can be more obvious when path-loss-factor becomes low.

In dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation applied into optical transmission links with multi fiber spans for minimizing the impact of nonlinearity and group velocity (GVD), implementation possibility of DM using only one fiber span for pre- or postcompensation was assessed as a function of duty cycle of RZ pulse and residual dispersion per span (RDPS). It is confirmed that DM with optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) controlled by only one fiber span could be sufficiently applied into optical transmission links, though optimal NRD is more increased than that in transmission links with the general DM scheme of pre- and postcompensation. Thus, it is expected that optical transmission system is simply designed and implemented by applying the proposed DM scheme into real optical transmission links. Also, it is confirmed that the advantageous duty cycle of RZ is 0.5 and RDPS is setting to be small value for the effective transmitting wide signal wavelength range in optical links with optimal NRD controlled by only one fiber span.

A multi-level optimal power flow(OPF) algorithm has been evolved from a simple two stage optimal Power flow algorithm for constrained power economic dispatch control. In the proposed algorithm, we consider various constraints such as ower balance, generation capacity, transmission line capacity, transmission losses, security equality, and security inequality constraints. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages. At the first stage, we solve the aggregated problem that is the crude classical economic dispatch problem without considering transmission losses. An initial solution is obtained by the aggregation concept in which the solution satisfies the power balance equations and generation capacity constraints. Then, after load flow analysis, the transmission losses of an initial generation setting are matched by the slack bus generator that produces power with the cheapest cost. At the second stage we consider transmission losses. Formulation of the second stage becomes classical economic dispatch problem involving the transmission losses, which are distributed to all generators. Once a feasible solution is obtained from the second stage, transmission capacity and other violations are checked and corrected locally and quickly at the third stage. The fourth stage fine tunes the solution of the third stage to reach a real minimum. The proposed approach speeds up the two stage optimization method to an average gain of 2.99 for IEEE 30, 57, and 118 bus systems and EPRI Scenario systems A through D testings.
When a new transmission line is planned to construct, the system voltage and the conductor size of the transmission line should be decided by both economical and technical point of view. This paper presents a methodology to determine the optimal voltage for upgrading the transmission system voltage of existing the extra high voltage grid network by meeting the requirements of the transmission cost minimization as well as technical constraints of thermal limit and stability limit in the transmission line. As a case study, calculated are optimal voltages versus distance and capacity of a practically applicable transmission line with 4 bundles 2 circuits. By this study 400kV was selected as the next higher voltage for the existing 220kV Libyan grid network.
Congestion Management (CM) is an attractive research area in the electrical power transmission with the power compensation abilities. Reconfiguration and the Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices utilization relieve the congestion in transmission lines. The lack of optimal power (real and reactive) usage with the better transfer capability and minimum cost is still challenging issue in the CM. The prediction of suitable place for the energy resources to control the power flow is the major requirement for power handling scenario. This paper proposes the novel optimization principle to select the best location for the energy resources to achieve the real-reactive power compensation. The parameters estimation and the selection of values with the best fitness through the Symmetrical Distance Travelling Optimization (SDTO) algorithm establishes the proper controlling of optimal power flow in the transmission lines. The modified fitness function formulation based on the bus parameters, index estimation correspond to the optimal reactive power usage enhances the power transfer capability with the minimum cost. The comparative analysis between the proposed method with the existing power management techniques regarding the parameters of power loss, cost value, load power and energy loss confirms the effectiveness of proposed work in the distributed renewable energy systems.
Optimal net residual dispersions (NRDs) of inline dispersion management (DM) for compensating the signal distortion of $24{\times}40$ Gbps WDM channels in optical transmission links, in which optical phase conjugator (OPC) is placed from 250 km to 750 km by spacing 50 km in 1,000 km total transmission length of single mode fiber (SMF), are induced as a function of various ope positions. And, performance improvement of WDM channels in transmission links with the induced optimal NRD is investigated by comparing with that in transmission links with NRD = 0 ps/nm. It is confirmed that optimal NRDs are decided by displacement of OPC from mid-way of total transmission length, i.e. 500 km, and the determinating and applying of optimal NRD in case of ope displacement into transmitters is more stable and effective than that in case of ope displacement into receivers from 500 km. Also, it is shown that eye opening penalties (EOPs) of WDM channels in transmission links with optimal NRD are improved by 1.5 dB to 3 dB, which are related with OPC position, from that obtained in transmission links with fixed NRD of 0 ps/nm.

An optimal design technique for minimum power loss in Kopp Ball Variator Continuously Variable Transmission is developed. Kinematic analysis of traction drive contact is performed to find spin for Kopp Ball Variator, and traction force and torque are calculated from mathem atical model of traction drive contact. The objective function for optimal design is total power loss including contact loss and bearing losses. The design contraints are derived from energy balance for input and output power. The formulated optimal design problem is implemented to a non-linear programming algorithm to find minimum power loss. The performance of optimal ly designed Kopp Ball Variator shows that efficiency is increased about 5-10% compare to a commercial unit.
