  • In this paper, we propose the method of adjusting thresholds using impurity indices in classification analysis on imbalanced data. Suppose the minority category is Positive and the majority category is Negative for the imbalanced binomial data. When categories are determined based on the commonly used 0.5 basis, the specificity tends to be high in unbalanced data while the sensitivity is relatively low. Increasing sensitivity is important when proper classification of objects in minority categories is relatively important. We explore how to increase sensitivity through adjusting thresholds. Existing studies have adjusted thresholds based on measures such as G-Mean and F1-score, but in this paper, we propose a method to select optimal thresholds using the chi-square statistic of CHAID, the Gini index of CART, and the entropy of C4.5. We also introduce how to get a possible unique value when multiple optimal thresholds are obtained. Empirical analysis shows what improvements have been made compared to the results based on 0.5 through classification performance metrics.

  • Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes.

  • In this paper, we consider a source node that operates over a time varying channel with energy harvesting capability. The goal of the source is to maximize the average number of successfully delivered packets per time slot. The source is able to choose whether to transmit a packet or defer the transmission in each time slot. The decision which is chosen by the source depends on the channel information available and the length of the energy queue. We formulate the problem of finding the optimal policy as a Markovian decision problem. We show some properties of the value function that represents the discounted number of successfully delivered packets per time slot. We prove that the optimal policy is a threshold type policy depending on the state of the channel and the length of the energy queue. We also derive an upper bound for the average number of packets per time slots successfully received by the destination. We show using numerical results that this bound is a tight bound on the performance of the optimal policy. And we consider the case of time varying channel but without channel state information (CSI). Then, we study the impact of channel time varying nature and the availability of CSI. In this case, we show that the optimal policy is a greedy policy. The performance of this greedy policy is also calculated.

  • Extensive literature exists on how to estimate optimal thresholds based on various accuracy measures using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and cumulative accuracy profile (CAP) curves. This paper now proposes an alternative measure to represented the specific partial area under the ROC and CAP curves. The relationship between ROC and CAP functions is examined using differential equations of the new defined partial area under curves. In addition, the relationship with the optimal thresholds under conditions of various accuracy measures for the ROC and CAP functions is also derived. We assume there are two kinds of distribution functions composing the mixed distribution as various normal distributions before finding the optimal thresholds. Corresponding type 1 and 2 errors are also explored and discussed under various conditions for accuracy measures.

  • Vehicular density is usually low in a highway environment. Consequently, connectivity of the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) might be poor. We are investigating the problem of deploying the approximation optimal roadside units (RSUs) on the highway covered by VANETs, which employs VANETs to provide excellent connectivity. The goal is to estimate the minimal number of deployed RSUs to guarantee the connectivity probability of the VANET within a given threshold considering that RSUs are to be allocated equidistantly. We apply an approximation algorithm to distribute RSUs locations in the VANETs. Thereafter, performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by calculating the connectivity probability of the VANET. The simulation results show that there is the threshold value M of implemented RSUs corresponding to each vehicular network with N vehicles. The connectivity probability increases slowly with the number of RSUs getting larger.

  • In this study, we propose an alternative method for discriminant analysis using a multivariate empirical distribution function to express multivariate data as a simple one-dimensional statistic. This method turns to be the estimation process of the optimal threshold based on classification accuracy measures and an empirical distribution function of data composed of classes. This can also be visually represented on a two-dimensional plane and discussed with some measures in ROC curves, surfaces, and manifolds. In order to explore the usefulness of this method for discriminant analysis in the study, we conducted comparisons between the proposed method and the existing methods through simulations and illustrative examples. It is found that the proposed method may have better performances for some cases.

  • A new approach for determining global threshold value of binary image is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, bit-plane information which involve the shapes of original image is used for dividing image into two parts; object and background. Optimal threshold value are selected based on difference values of average between two regions, which is considered in global binary thresholding. Proposed method is no need to set a initial value, and consequently, it is relatively simple as well as robust. Experimental results showed a good performance in preserving edge not only continuous tone images but also document image.

  • In this paper, an analytic model of sleep model operation in the IEEE 802.16e is investigated. A mobile subscribe. station (MSS) goes to sleep mode after negotiations with the base station (BS) and wakes up periodically for a short interval to check whether there is downlink traffic to it. If the arrival of traffic is notified, an MSS returns to wake mode. Otherwise, it again enters increased sleep interval which is double as the previous one. In order to consider the situation more practically, we propose the sleep mode starting threshold, during which MSS should await packets before it enters the sleep mode. By modifying the M/G/1 with multiple vacations model, energy consumption ratio(ECR) and average packet response time are calculated. Our analytic model provides potential guidance in determining the optimal parameters values such as sleep mode starting threshold, minimal sleep and maximal sleep window.

  • Uncertain factors in finical markets make the prediction of future returns and risk of asset much difficult. In this paper, a model, assuming the admissible errors on expected returns and risks of assets, assisted in the multiperiod mean variance portfolio selection problem is built. The model considers transaction costs, upper bound on borrowing risk-free asset constraints, cardinality constraints and threshold constraints. Cardinality constraints limit the number of assets to be held in an efficient portfolio. At the same time, threshold constraints limit the amount of capital to be invested in each stock and prevent very small investments in any stock. Because of these limitations, the proposed model is a mix integer dynamic optimization problem with path dependence. The forward dynamic programming method is designed to obtain the optimal portfolio strategy. Finally, to evaluate the model, our result of a meaning example is compared to the terminal wealth under different constraints.

  • An algorithm using topological mapping has been developed for a real-time detection of the QRS complexes of ECG signals. As a measurement of QRS complex energy, we used topological mapping from one dimensional sampled ECG signals to two dimensional vectors. These vectors are reconstructed with the sampled ECG signals and the delayed ones. In this method, the detection rates of CRS complex vary with the parameters such as R-R interval average and peak detection threshold coefficient. We use mean, median, and iterative method to determint R-R interval average and peak estimation. We experiment on various value of search back coefficient and peak detection threshold coefficient to find optimal rule.
