  • In this paper, a new morphology-based homomorphic filtering technique is presented to enhance features in medical images. The homomorphic filtering is performed based on the morphological sub-bands, in which an image is morphologically decomposed. An evolutionary design is carried to find an optimal gain and structuring element of each sub-band. As a search algorithm, Differential Evolution scheme is utilized. Simulations show that the proposed filter improves the contrast of the interest feature in medical images.

  • As evolution of the process technology, we proposed the Over-The-Cell channel routing algorithm for the advanced three-layer process. The proposed algorithm simplifies the channel routing problem, and then makes use of Simulated Annealing Technique to converge at global optimal solution. Also, we proposed a new method to remove the cyclic vertical constraints which are known to be the hardest element in the channel routing problem and a way to detect the local minimal solution and escape from it successfully.

  • The introduction of electricity industry provides generators incentives to recover the related cost through the market. Hence, the generator should sell his/her electricity at high market-clearing price with optimal operation of his/her power plant. The maintenance of power plant is the most critical factor in affecting generators' decision-making. This paper analyzes technique for establishing maintenance schedule reflecting recovery cost and considers differences in monthly load pattern in minimizing LOLP.

  • Glass fiber reinforced PET (Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate) matrix composite was manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages. The optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content, tensile, interlaminar shear, and impact properties. A tensile test was attempted to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite. It is found that the level of crystallinity and microstructure affects on the tensile properties substantially.

  • The emitting structure of multi-channel-type flat fluorescent lamps (FFLs) combined by a lenticular-lens-patterned diffuser plate was optimized by the ray tracing technique. The optimal parameters such as the distance between the channels of the FFL and the distance between the FFL and the diffuser plate were suggested from the viewpoint of the luminance uniformity. The best luminance uniformity, which was higher than 90%, was obtained at the channel distance of 4 mm and the distance of 12.5 mm between the FFL and the patterned diffuser plate.

  • The dynamic characteristics of Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM) in Korea standard Nuclear Power Plant was reviewed as a secondary mass in a simplified two degree of freedom system, while the reactor vessel as a primary mass. The design improvement stratege to minimize each displacement amplitude of these primary and secondary masses was proposed. According to this stratege the designs of CEDM components, the shroud and the pressure housing, respectively, were changed using optimization technique.

  • A new technique using integer programming based on fuzzy multi-criteria function is proposed for generator maintenance scheduling. Minimization maintenance delay cost and maximization reserve power are considered for fuzzy multi-criteria function. To obtain an optimal solution for generator maintenance scheduling under fuzzy environment, fuzzy multi-criteria integer programming is used. In the maintenance scheduling, a characteristic feature of the presented approach is that the crisp constraints with uncertainty can be taken into account by using fuzzy set theory and so more flexible solution can be obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by the simulation results.

  • This study aims at the optimal design of the screw rotor, its performance analysis, and development of a small screw supercharger which has a low noise compared with the root type supercharger. The basic theoretical equations and the basic design of the screw supercharger have been established. The optical design of the screw rotor's shape has been also performed theoretically. Also, the performance analysis technique of the designed screw rotor has been developed.

  • Preprocessing is the essential technique in the implementation of the simplex method for large scale linear programming problems. In this research, we explained the effect of preprocessing in the simplex method, classified the techniques into four categories, and compared our results with those of HOPDM, CPLEX and Soplex by computational experiments. We also noted some implementing issues of preprocessing for the simplex method and the recovery of the optimal basis of the original problem from that of the preprocessed problem.
