  • This paper describes the characteristics of piezoelectric micro power generators by the ANSYS FEA(finite element analysis). The micro power generator was designed to convert ambient vibration energy to electrical power as a ZnO piezoelectric material. To find optimal model in low vibration ambient, the shape of power generator was changed with different membrane width, thickness, length, and proof mass size. Using the ANSYS modal analysis, bending mode and stress distribution of optimal model were analyzed. Moreover, the displacement with the frequency range was analyzed by harmonic analysis. From the simulation results, the resonance frequency of optimal model is about 373 Hz and investigate the possibility of ZnO micro power generator for ambient vibration applications.

  • When generating layout schemes, both the material usage and practicality of the cutting process should be considered. This paper presents a two-section algorithm for generating guillotine-cutting schemes of rectangular blanks. It simplifies the cutting process by allowing only one size of blanks to appear in any rectangular block. The algorithm uses an implicit enumeration and a linear programming optimal cutting scheme to maximize the material usage. The algorithm was tested on some benchmark problems in the literature, and compared with the three types of layout scheme algorithm. The experimental results show that the algorithm is effective both in computation time and in material usage.

  • The analysis of optimal infiltration path is one of the representative fields in which the GIS technology can be useful for the military purpose. Usually the analysis of the optimal path is done with network data. However, for military purpose, it often needs to be done with raster data. Because raster data needs far more computation than network data, it is difficult to apply the methods usually used in network data, such as Dijkstra algorithm. The genetic algorithm, which has shown great outcomes in optimization problems, was applied. It was used to minimize the detection probability of infiltration route. 2D binary array genes and its crossover and mutation were suggested to solve this problem with raster data. 30 tests were performed for each population size, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000. With each generation, more adoptable routes survived and made their children routes. Results indicate that as the generations increased, average detection probability decreased and the routes converged to the optimal path. Also, as the population size increases, more optimal routes were found. The suggested genetic algorithm successfully finds the optimal infiltration route, and it shows better performance with larger population.

  • The domestic semiconductor industry can produce various products that will satisfy customer needs by diversifying assembly parts and increasing compatibility between them. It is necessary to improve the production line as a method to reduce the work-in-process inventory (WIP) in the assembly line, the idle time of the worker, and the idle time of the process. The improvement of the production line is to balance the capabilities of each process as a whole, and to determine the timing of product input or the order of the work process so that the time required between each process is balanced. The purpose of this study is to find the optimal WIP and buffer size through SA (Simulated Annealing) that minimizes lead time while matching the number of two parts in a parallel assembly line with bottleneck process. The WIP level and buffer size obtained by the SA algorithm were applied to the CONWIP and DBR systems, which are the existing production systems, and the simulation was performed by applying them to the new hybrid production system. Here, the Hybrid method is a combination of CONWIP and DBR methods, and it is a production system created by setting new rules. As a result of the Simulation, the result values were derived based on three criteria: lead time, production volume, and work-in-process inventory. Finally, the effect of the hybrid production method was verified through comparative analysis of the result values.

  • The study investigates the effects of luminance contrast, which is the contrast between text color and background color, on readability in VDT environments. Our research goals are to prove that the relationship between luminance contrast and readability is not linear and to explore the best luminance contrast level for optimal readability. We conducted two pretests before the main experiment to determine the operational readability and luminance contrast levels. We also conducted a controlled main experiment, in which luminance contrast, reading amount and screen size were tested in terms of its relation with readability. The results of the main experiment indicate that the readability has a non-linear relation with luminance contrast, and the optimal readability is obtained when the contrast is equal to 0.951. Furthermore, the non-linear function and optional point stay constant regardless of screen size and reading amount. The paper ends with implications of the results that maximal contrast does not always mean the optimal readability.

  • Today, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used in industry because of the availability of high-performance computers. However, full-scale analysis poses problems owing to the limited resources and time. In this study, the performance and optimal size of a heat exchanger were calculated using the effectiveness-number of transfer units (${\varepsilon}-NTU$) method and a database of characteristics heat exchanger. Information about the geometry and performance of various heat exchangers is collected, and the performance of the heat exchanger is calculated under the given operating conditions. To determine the optimal size of the heat exchanger, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used, and MATLAB and REFPROP are used for the calculation.

  • It is a challenging issue to improve the energy efficiency of neighbor discovery in WSNs. This paper proposes an optimal discovery model (ODM) for the first time. Based on the model, we investigate the influence of the relative size of two unequal active slots on the energy efficiency. ODM provides the energy optimal value of the length of the larger active slot at a given duty cycle. Other than existing methods, the worst-case latency bound of ODM is only one period. This is a subversive conclusion, because almost all other related methods are based on a wake-up schedule that contains several periods. We theoretically deduce that ODM can reduce worst-case discovery latency by 43.89% compared to Searchlight-Trim when their duty cycles are the same. The simulations verify the advantage of ODM.

  • The flow characteristics have been numerically investigated for various shapes of the diffuser/nozzles which are used for a valveless micro-pump. The important parameters considered in this study are the throat width ($15\~120\mu$m), the taper angle ($3.15\~25.2^{\circ}$), and the diffuser length ( $600\~4,800\mu$m), and the size of the middle chamber ($1\~16mm^2$). To find the optimal values for these parameters, steady state calculations have been performed assuming the constant pressure difference between the inlet and exit of the flow For the taper angle and the throat width, it is found that there exists an optimum at which the net flow rate is the greatest. The optimal taper angle is in the range of $10\~20^{\circ}$ for all the pressure differences; and the throat width indicates an optimal value near $75\mu$m for the case of 35 kPa pressure difference. The net flow rate is also influenced by the size of the middle chamber. With decreasing chamber size, the net flow rate is reduced because of the interference between two streams flowing into the middle chamber. The unsteady pulsating flow characteristics for a micro-pump with a given diffuser/nozzle shape have been also investigated to show the validity of the steady state parametric study.

  • Fine $La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3$ nanocrystalline powders have been successfully prepared by modified citrate pyrolysis process. The obtained LCMO nanoscale grains have a mean particle size of about 30 nm under optimal treatment conditions. The particle size can be controlled by adjusting processing parameters, such as treatment temperature and calcination time. X-ray diffraction, SEM and magnetoresistance effect were employed to study the crystal structure, morphology and magnetic property of these nanosized powders. A novel MR effect (MR > 45% (0 K < T < 340 K)) at room temperature has been found.

  • Based on classical Berotti discrete iron loss calculation model, the iron loss analysis mathematical model of alternator was proposed in this paper. Considering characteristics of high speed and changing frequency of the alternator, Maxwell 3-D model was built to analyze iron loss corresponding to each running speed in alternator. Based on iron loss model of alternator at rated speed, the rotor claw pole size was made an optimization design. The optimization results showed that alternator's output performance had been improved. A new idea was explored in size optimization design of claw pole alternator.
