This paper proposes the comparison results of various optimal power flow algorithms (OPF) to calculate the locational marginal prices (LMP) of the unreduced full scale Korean transmission system. Five different types of optimal power flow models are employed: Full AC OPF, Cubic AC OPF, Quadratic AC OPF, Linear AC OPF and DC OPF. As the results, full AC OPF and cubic AC OPF model provides LMP calculation results very similar to each other while the calculation time of cubic AC OPF model is faster than that of the Full AC OPF. Other simplified OPF models, quadratic AC OPF, linear AC OPF and DC OPF offer erroneous results even though the calculation times are much faster than the Full AC OPF and the Cubic AC OPF. Given the condition that the OPF models sometimes fail to find the optimal solution due to the severe complexity of the Korean transmission power system, the Full AC OPF should be used as the primary OPF model while the Cubic AC OPF can be a promising backup OPF model for the LMP calculations and/or real-time operation.
This paper presents long-term shunt capacitor planning using optimal power flow. OPF allows the planning engineer to find feasible solution with minimal amount of engineering time. We used OPF for Shunt capacitor planning to get an optimal solution. The result of OPF is compared to the analysis by the conventional loadflow method and it is proved that OPF gives more cheaper and better planning solution. With the result, we analyzed the operational perspective for the reactive power supply and demand.

The recent requirement for faster and more frequent solutions has encouraged the consideration of parallel implementations using decentralized processors. Distributed multi-processor environments can potentially greatly increase the available computational capacity and decrease the communication burden, allowing for faster Optimal Power Flow (OPF) solutions. This paper presents a mathematical approach to implementing distributed OPF using the alternating direction method (ADM) to parallelize the OPF. Several IEEE Reliability Test Systems were adopted to demonstrate the proposed algorithm.

This paper shows that we can make simple modifications to an existing optimal power flow(OPF) algorithm that minimizes generation costs in order to solve the maximization of social welfare objective of the OPF in a competitive electric power market. We have illustrated the potential for the use of OPF in light of the marked impacts on nodal prices and generation/demand allocation levels among competing suppliers. This paper can provide all market players with the transparent information that ensures sufficient control over producers and consumers in case of economic of secure operation with transmission line outage while maximizing the sum of participants social benefit of participating in the electricity energy market.

Switching of the transmission lines(T/L) is one of the ways for suppressing the short circuit capacity. This paper presents the extended optimal power flow(OPF) to the problem of selecting the T/Ls to be open. The constraints of the short circuit currents within limits are added to the inequalities of OPF. Also, the overload on the other lines due to switching of T/Ls is avoided by the linearized inequalities. The number of the open lines can be minimized by incorporating into the objective function of OPF in order to maintain reliability. The method of an effective calculation of the extended OPF is also proposed in this paper, which makes the two parts decoupled. The one concerning the generation dispatch is solved in the first place by the conventional method. Secondly, the other concerning the line-switching is optimized by the proposed formulation.
In order to solve the AC optimal power flow (OPF) problem considering the generators' on/off status, it is necessary to model the problem as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Because the computation time to find the optimal solution to the mixed-integer AC OPF problem increases significantly as the system becomes larger, most of the existing solutions simplify the problem either by deciding the on/off status of generators using a separate unit commitment algorithm or by ignoring the minimum output of the generators. Even though this kind of simplification may make the overall computation time tractable, the results can be significantly erroneous. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for the mixed-integer AC OPF problem, which can provide a near-optimal solution quickly and efficiently. The proposed method is based on a combination of the outer approximation method and the relaxed AC OPF theory. The method is applied to a real-scale power system that has 457 generators and 2132 buses, and the result is compared to the branch-and-bound (B&B) method and the genetic algorithm. The results of the proposed method are almost identical to those of the compared methods, but computation time is significantly shorter.
The present paper presents an optimal capacitor placement (OCP) algorithm for voltagestability enhancement. The OCP issue is represented using a mixed-integer problem and a highly nonlinear problem. The hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the OCP problem. The HPSO algorithm combines the optimal power flow (OPF) with the primal-dual interior-point method (PDIPM) and ordinary PSO. It takes advantage of the global search ability of PSO and the very fast simulation running time of the OPF algorithm with PDIPM. In addition, OPF gives intelligence to PSO through the information provided by the dual variable of the OPF. Numerical results illustrate that the HPSO algorithm can improve the accuracy and reduce the simulation running time. Test results evaluated with the three-bus, New England 39-bus, and Korea Electric Power Corporation systems show the applicability of the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents to compute the power economic dispatch, an optimal power flow (OPF) computation algorithm, considering the load power factor limits constraint in developed. Efficient reactive power planning enhances economic operation as well as system security. Accordingly, an adequate level of power factor limits for the load busesshould be evaluated for economic operation. In this paper, the ranges of acceptable load power factors are portrayed as bandwidths of load power factor expressed as a function of load level. The load power factor limits are included and described into the OPF's objective function. The method Proposed is applied to IEEE 26 bus system.

This paper presents a hybrid algorithm for solving optimal power flow(OPF) in order to enhance a systems capability to cope with outages, which is based on combined application of evolutionary computation and local search method. The efficient algorithm combining main advantages of two methods is as follows : Firstly, evolutionary computation is used to perform global exploitation among a population. This gives a good initial point of conventional method. Then, local methods are used to perform local exploitation. The hybrid approach often outperforms either method operating alone and reduces the total computation time. The objective function of the security constrained OPF is the minimization of generation fuel costs and real power losses. The resulting optimal operating point has to be feasible after outages such as any single line outage(respect of voltage magnitude, reactive power generation and power flow limits). In OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method(contingency screening model). The OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method(contingency screening model). The method proposed is applied to IEEE 30 buses system to show its effectiveness.
This paper presents a method of decision on where bus splitting is needed to reduce fault current level of power systems and to satisfy the fault current constraints. The method employs a modified fault current constrained optimal power flow (FCC-OPF) with X variables for the candidate locations of splitting and for decision making on whether to split or not, it adopts soft-discretization by augmenting inversed U-shaped penalty terms. Also, this paper discusses the procedure on the adequate selection of bus splitting locations based on the results of the modified FCC-OPF, to reduce the total number of the actions taken.
