  • We have developed a direct measurement method for gain coefficients of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and used the coefficients for the design of flat gain EDFAs. Another simple method of designing EDFAs for WDM was realized as an application of inversion principle.

  • We have developed the LCD Simulator, which is called "ProLCD", in order to reduce time and efforts for the design and analysis of LCDs. We describe the numerical models implementing the computation of LC directors and electro-optics, the graphic user interface and the visualization modules. Many applications show that ProLCD is a very useful, interactive design tool with good reliability.

  • A software to calculate diffraction OTF from lens design data was developed and its accuracy was verified. To verify the accuracy, MTF of a standard lens system for OTF measurement were calculated. The results were compared with calculated values by another commercial software and measured values. We found that they have good agreements with one another.

  • The overall design of the optical isolator system is prepared for the 1 TW Nd pulse laser. Two pockels cell optical switches are employed to suppress the amplified spontaneous emission and the backward reflection. The role of two Farady rotators is to protect the laser system from the light amplified after back reflection. One saturable absorber dye and one liquid crystal polarizer/isolator will also serve as optical isolator.

  • We propose a novel method to design a dispersion map for a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring network with the capability of wavelength reconfiguration. The method is simple, but gives us an optimum set of DCMs (Dispersion Compensation Modules) which satisfies a given value of the tolerable residual dispersion. The proposed method does not depend on compensation method, fiber type, or modulation format. We also demonstrate numerically how it works with an example 10-node ring network.

  • The optical design of the Linear-Astigmatism-Free Three-Mirror-System (LAF-TMS) for KASI-Deep Rolling Imaging Fast-optics Telescope(K-DRIFT) is presented. LAF-TMS is an all-reflective imaging system consists of three freeform mirrors. Due to its well-corrected aberrations and obstruction-free clear aperture, the LAF-TMS provides a wide field of view with very low scattered lights.

  • A focal reducer is developed for CQUEAN (Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse), which is a CCD imaging system on the 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at the McDonald observatory. It allows CQUEAN to secure a wider field of view by reducing the effective focal length by a factor of three. The optical point spread function without seeing effects is designed to be within one pixel ($0.283^{\prime\prime}$) over the field of view of $4.82^{\prime}{\times}4.82^{\prime}$ in optimum wavelength ranges of 0.8-1.1 ${\mu}m$. In this paper, we describe and discuss the characteristics of optical design, the lens and barrel fabrications and the alignment processes. The observation results show that the image quality of the focal reducer confirms the expectations from the design.

  • IGRINS (Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrometer) is a high resolution wide-band infrared spectrograph developed by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT). The slit-viewing camera is one of four re-imaging optics in IGRINS including the input relay optics and the H- and K- band spectrograph cameras. Consisting of five lenses and one Ks-band filter, the slit viewing camera relays the infrared image of $2'{\times}2'$ field around the slit to the detector focal plane. Since IGRINS is a cryogenic instrument, the lens barrel is designed to be optimized at the operating temperature of 130 K. The barrel design also aims to achieve easy alignment and assembly. We use radial springs and axial springs to support lenses and lens spacers against the gravity and thermal contraction. Total weight of the lens barrel is estimated to be 1.2 kg. Results from structural analysis are presented.

  • As Aspheric lenses have producted to development for disadvantage of spherical lenses, the purpose of use on aspheric lenses is in improvement of the imaging quality and decrement of the number of lenses used, they are used for lessen the mass and volume in optical science. The skills to produce optical data and the aspheric are seen as high technology today. The optical science which is composed of aspheric provides broadening view of things and high efficiency. In addition, it provides many advantages such as providing image and reducing the weight. Now, I study with techniques of processing and measuring aspheric to satisfy the necessity of increasing in aspheric data. Furthermore. I emphasize that the techniques of producing, measuring, and evaluating in the aspheric lenses have constantly developing today.

  • A focal length-correcting lens called the F-theta lens is required to compensate for the different focus on spot size due to the deflected incident laser beam. The F-theta lens was designed by the ray tracing method and fabricated by a 3D printer with polymer-based material. The designed F-theta lens is able to compensate for the focus on spot size by an incidence angle of 0 to 2 degrees. Based on the analysis of the simulation, there was almost no aberration in the $0^{\circ}C$ incidence angle, and the maximum of $50{\mu}m$ of aberration was observed at the incidence angle of $2^{\circ}$. Diffraction-encircled energy was analyzed to characterize the designed optics, and an image simulation was performed to confirm the actual image resolution.
