  • In this paper, for low cost infrared optical equipment, we design and fabricate an infrared optical system for an uncooled detector using PGM(Precision Glass Molding) lenses. The designed infrared optical system has a good athermalization, and the material of all of its lenses is a chalcogenide glass suitable for the PGM method. In addition, we also fabricate the same infrared optical system using SPDT(Single Point Diamond Turning) lenses in order to measure the optical performance of PGM lenses. We measure the MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) of the two infrared optical systems which use the PGM lenses and the SPDT lenses. And then we compare and analyze the images of them both. As a result, we find that they have only a very small difference in optical performance. If the use of PGM lenses increases, we expect to reduce the cost of infrared optical equipment.

  • To evaluate the autofocusing performance of recent mobile phone cameras, it is necessary to determine the peak position of the center field MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), -known as the through focus MTF- of the module. However, the MTF peak position found by conventional methods deviates from the ideal position due to the focus scanning resolution of mobile phone cameras. This inaccurate peak position results in false judgements of the optical performance, leading to yield losses or customer complaints. An increase in the focus scanning resolution can address this problem, but the manufacturing UPH (Unit per Hour) level will also unfortunately increase as well, resulting in a loss of manufacturing capabilities. In this paper, several fitting models are studied to find an accurate MTF peak position within a short period of time. With an analysis of a large amount of manufacturing data, it is demonstrated that the fitting methods can reduce false judgements and simultaneously increase the capabilities of the manufacturing system.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) is currently under development for use in the STSAT3 microsatellite. COMIS images the Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distances of ${\sim}30m$ in the $18{\sim}62$ spectral bands ($4.0{\sim}1.05{\mu}m$) for the nadir looking at an altitude of 700 km. COMIS has an imaging telescope and an imaging spectrometer box into which three electronics PCBs are embedded. These are designed into a single assembly with dimensions of 35(L) $\times$ 20(W) $\times$ 12(H) $cm^3$ and a mass of 4.3 kg. Optomechanical design efforts are focused on manufacturing ease, alignment, assembly, testing and improved robustness in space environments. Finite element analysis demonstrates that COMIS will survive in launch and space environments and perform the system modulation transfer function (MTF) in excess of 0.29 at the Nyquist frequency of the CCD detector (38.5 lines-per-mm).

  • Pointing stability of high precision observation satellites must satisfy the stringent requirements to perform at a designed level. As even a small vibrational disturbance can result in severe degradation of the optical performance, the effects of inorbit vibrational environment on the performance of optical payload must be predicted and analyzed in the design phase in order to ensure that the requirements imposed on the payload are fully met. In this paper, an integrated framework for the evaluation of the performance of optical payloads is developed. The developed simulation tool comprises of the reaction wheel induced disturbance model, state space model of a structure in modal form and Cassegrain reflector model. The performance degradation of the optical system due to jitter is expressed by using modulation transfer function (MTF) and image simulation. Moreover, vibration isolator model is also added to show the effectiveness of using a vibration isolator for the elimination of the effects of jitter in the acquisition of an image.

  • PCI Express (PCIe) bus, which was only used as an internal I/O bus of a computer system, has expanded its function to outside of a system, with progress of PCIe switching processor. In particular, advanced features of PCIe switching processor enable PCIe bus to serve as an interconnection network as well as connecting external devices. As PCIe switching processors more advanced, it is required to consider the different adapter card architecture. This study developed multipurpose adapter cards by applying an on-board optical module, a latest optical communications element, in order to improve transfer distance and utilization. The performance evaluation confirmed that the new adapter cards with long cable can provide the same bandwidth as that of the existing adapter cards with short copper cable.

  • In this paper a catadioptric laser-irradiation-precision test system is designed, to achieve a high-precision laser-irradiation-accuracy test. In this system, we adopt the method of imaging the entire target surface at a certain distance to realize the measurement of laser-irradiation precision. The method possesses the advantages of convenient operation, high sensitivity, and good stability. To meet the test accuracy requirement of 100 mm/km (0.01%), the coma, field curvature, and distortion over the entire field of view should be eliminated from the optical system's design. Taking into account the whole length of the tube and the influence of stray light on the structure type, a catadioptric system with a hood added near the primary imaging surface is designed. After optimization using the ZEMAX software, the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the designed optical system is 0.6 at 30 lp/mm, the full-field-of-view distortion is better than 0.18%, and the energy concentration in the 10-㎛-radius surrounding circle reaches about 90%. The illumination-accuracy test results show that the measurement accuracy of the radiation hit rate is better than 50 mm when the test distance is 1 km, which is better than the requirement of 100 mm/km for the laser-irradiation-accuracy test.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) was developed for a microsatellite STSAT-3. The satellite is now rescheduled to be launched into a low sun-synchronous Earth orbit (~700 km) by the end of 2012. Its main operational goal is the imaging of the Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distance of 27 m and 2 - 15 nm spectral resolution over visible and near infrared spectrum (0.4 - 1.05 ${\mu}m$). A flight model of COMIS was developed following an engineering model that had successfully demonstrated hyperspectral imaging capability and structural rigidity. In this paper we report the environmental test results of the flight model. The mechanical stiffness of the model was confirmed by a small shift of the natural frequency i.e., < 1% over 10 gRMS random vibration test. Electrical functions of the model were also tested without showing any anomalies during and after vacuum thermal cycling test with < $10^{-5}$ torr and $-30^{\circ}C\;-\;35^{\circ}C$. The imaging capability of the model, represented by a modulation transfer function (MTF) value at the Nyquist frequency, was also kept unvaried after all those environmental tests.

  • Electro-Optical Camera(EOC) is the main payload of Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) with the mission of cartography to build up a digital map of Korean territory including Digital Terrain Elevation Map(DTEM). This instrument which comprises EOC Sensor Assembly and EOC Electronics Assembly produces the panchromatic images of 6.6 m GSD with a swath wider than 17 km by push-broom scanning and spacecraft body pointing in a visible range of wavelength, 510 ~ 730 nm. The high resolution panchromatic image is to be collected for 2 minutes during 98 minutes of orbit cycle covering about 800 km along ground track, over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable rain/offset and on-board image data storage. The image of 8 bit digitization, which is collected by a full reflective type F8.3 triplet without obscuration, is to be transmitted to Ground Station at a rate less than 25 Mbps. EOC was elaborated to have the performance which meets or surpasses its requirements of design phase. The spectral response the modulation transfer function, and the uniformity of all the 2592 pixel of CCD of EOC are illustrated as they were measured for the convenience of end-user. The spectral response was measured with respect to each gain setup of EOC and this is expected to give the capability of generating more accurate panchromatic image to the EOC data users. The modulation transfer function of EOC was measured as greater than 16% at Nyquist frequency over the entire field of view which exceeds its requirement of larger than 10%, The uniformity that shows the relative response of each pixel of CCD was measured at every pixel of the Focal Plane Array of EOC and is illustrated for the data processing.

  • Track geometry consists of tangent and curved lines, which caused undesirable changes in initial track geometry by traffic loads. The bigger the changes are, the worse the riding comfort and running stability of train. This is so-called track irregularity and is the most important quality parameters of ballasted track. To be able to objectively assess track irregularity, track geometry should be able to be measured. Practically, railway companies use moving chord method, this method determine versine values via a chord. The versine is the vertical distance to curve measured in the middle of the chord. This type of method measures only versine of track irregularity curve by transfer function from specific property of measuring tool. In this report, review the characteristics of two types of measuring tools by comparing the measurements. The one is GRP-1000 system, optical surveying system with Total station and lazar prism trolly. This calculates track geometry by surveying absolute coordinates of two points each on both rail heads. The other is Trackmaster, measures versine with 2m of chord length.
