  • Variable optical attenuators (VOA) made of low-loss fluorinated polymers are demonstrated which shows a low operating power less than 30 mW due to the superior thermo-optic effect of polymer material and a low insertion loss less than 1.0 dB by incorporating highly fluorinated polymers to reduce the absorption loss at 1550 nm. An attenuator-integrated low-crosstalk polymeric digital optical switch (DOS) is also demonstrated. The switch and attenuator shares a single connected electrode which is controlled by a single current source. Due to the simple structure of the integrated attenuator, the device length is reduced to 1 cm so as to provide low insertion loss of 0.8 and 1.1 dB for 1300 and 1550 nm, respectively. The attenuator radiates remained optical signal on the switch-off branch in order to decrease the switching crosstalk to be less than -70 dB with an applied electrical power of 200 mW.

  • The design procedure of a GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor matrix optical switch is presented for a simplified tree architecture in the viewpoint of optical loss. A low loss, 0.537 dB/cm, pin type substrate is designed by considering the loss due to imputity doping at 1.3 $\mu$m wavelength. The operating voltage and the device length of a reversed ${\Delta}{\beta}$ electro-optic directional coupler(EODC) swith which is a cross-point device of the 4${\times}$4 matrix optical switch and the bending loss of rib waveguide are caculated as functions of waveguide parameters and bending parameters. There is an optimum bending radius for some waveguide parameters. It is recommened that higher optical confinement conditions such as wide waveguide width and higher rib-height should be chosen for structural parameters of a low loss and a process insensitive 4${\times}$4 matris optical switch. A 4${\times}$4 optical matrix switch which has a 3 dB loss and a 12 volt operating voltage is designed.

  • This letter presents a crosstalk-enhanced polymer thermo-optic digital optical switch operating at a low power consumption. Modified radiation-type attenuators are integrated in a series with a conventional $1{\times}2$ digital optical switch. A low optical crosstalk of less than -45 dB is attained at a low applied switching power of 60 mW, and an insertion loss of about 1.1 dB is exhibited.

  • We report a nickel optical MEMS switch, being able to rotate through a large angle and to accommodate multiple channels. The proposed optical switch consists of a thin nickel mirror and two torsion springs supporting the mirror. The torsion springs are designed using a finite element method (FEM) such that plastic deformation of the thin nickel is avoided during the large torsion actuation. For switching speed improvement, transient vibration of the released mirror is suppressed by optimizing the mirror design and a fast switching response of $200\;{\mu}s\;(pull-down)/300\;{\mu}s\;(pull-up)$ is demonstrated.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • This letter presents a polymer $1{\times}2$ thermo-optic totalinternal-reflection digital optical switch (TIR-DOS) with an index contrast of 1.5%-${\delta}$ operating at low power consumption. The structure of our $1{\times}2$ TIR-DOS was created by adding a reflection port to that of a conventional multimode filtering variable optical attenuator. To improve the total-internalr-eflection efficiency, a heater offset was applied to the crossing region of multimode waveguides of the TIR-DOS. The fabricated $1{\times}2$ TIR-DOS shows a low electrical power consumption of 18 mW for an on-off ratio of 35 dB.

  • The current fast-growing Internet traffic is demanding more and more network capacity. Photonic packet switching offers high-speed, data rate/format transparency, and configurability, which are some of the important characteristics needed in future networks supporting different forms of data. In this paper, we define that optical backbone networks for IP transport consist of optical packet core switches and optical fibers. We propose a multi-link photonic packet switch managing as single media which unifies the whole bandwidth of multiple wavelengths on the optical fiber in the WDM optical networks. The proposed switch uses optical packet memories of output link equally as well as using the WDM buffer. So it cuts down the required number of buffers and realizes of the optical packet memory economically.
