  • Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with optical phase conjugator (OPC) and dispersion management (DM) for compensating the distorted wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects. WDM systems considered in this research have optical links with the random distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in each single mode fiber (SMF) spans of only one half transmission section for designing the adaptive optical transmission system configurations. It is confirmed that optimal NRD is 10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -8~1 dBm under NRD = 10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by precompensation. And, it is also confirmed that optimal NRD is -10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -7.5~1 dBm under NRD = -10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by postcompensation.

  • Novel unified criterion to optimize power coupling at optical directional couplers with discontinuous input/output interfaces is first defined and evaluated numerically. The numerical results reveal that maximum power transfer between guiding slabs without discontinuous interfaces is dominated by conventional phase-matching condition while the guiding structures with discontinuous interfaces has maximum power transfer at an equi-partition condition, which describes the power distribution condition between two rigorous modes propagating through optical couplers.

  • We present the optical models and calculation results of thin-film organic solar cells (OSCs) at oblique incidence of light, using the transfer matrix method. The simple expression for the optical power dissipation is derived at oblique incidence for s- and p-polarized light. The spatial distribution of the electric field intensity, the optical power density, and the optical power dissipation are calculated in both s- and p-polarized light with respect to the incidence angle. We identify how the light absorption efficiency for p-polarized light becomes relatively larger than that for s-polarized light as the incidence angle increases.

  • An Nd:YAG slab structure was designed for a high-power zigzag slab laser amplifier based on computational simulation of the wavefront distortion. For the simulation, the temperature distribution in the slab was calculated at first by thermal analysis. Then, the optical path length (OPL) was obtained by a ray tracing method for the corresponding refractive index variation inside the slab. After that, the OPL distribution of the double-pass amplified beam was calculated by summing the results obtained for the first and second passes. The amount of wavefront distortion was finally obtained as the peak-to-valley value of the OPL distribution. As a result of this study, the length and position of the gain medium were optimized by minimizing the transverse wavefront distortion. Under the optimized conditions, the transverse wavefront distortion of the double-pass amplified beam was less than $0.2{\mu}m$ for pump power of 14 kW.

  • In this study, we performed a modeling for $K^{+}$ ion-exchanged diffused channel waveguide and waveguide-type optical coupler by Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin(WKB) dispersion equation, normalized field distribution equation for mode and coupled mode theory, and examined the optical-power-dividing of the optical coupler fabricated by using the modeling condition. The optical-power-dividing was observed at the waveguide-type optical coupler with 3[.mu.m] line-width, 6[.mu.m] space between channel waveguides, and 3[mm] interaction length.h.

  • The design rule depending on total transmission length is induced in the optical links with residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of the random distribution, which is adopted for implementing the flexible systems of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission with dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation. DM parameters used for the analysis of the design rule are the effective net residual dispersion (NRD) and the effective launch power. It is confirmed that the flexible optical network configuration with the total transmission length lower than 1,000 km is possible, because the system performance difference between the randomly distribution and the uniform distribution of RDPS is small. And, in the optical links with the randomly distributed RDPS, the wide NRD can be applied for transmitting WDM channels of the relatively wide launch power.

  • The temperature of power transformers is very important factor for power system operation in substation because load capacity and limited lifetime of power transformers are determined by winding temperature. Also, The temperature of power transformers varies with the structure, capacity, operation condition and manufacturers. Thus, it is necessary for temperature distribution to be exactly investigated because of efficient load management and prediction of limited lifetime. Nevertheless, there was no case of analysis as well as measurement of the temperature of power transformers. In this paper, we manufactured the 154kV standard power transformer for the test. And we measured the temperature by the heat run test and analyzed the temperature distribution of transformer.

  • A fishing lamp is the instrument for attracting distributed fish to a certain place, and is the lighting system mainly used in fishery. In the inshore fishing, most fishing lamps are used for squid and hairtail jigging fishing, and the light source of the fishing lamps mainly used is metal halide with 1.5 KW in electric power consumption. We will analyze the irradiance distribution according to depth because squid is attracted towards light. To analyze irradiance distribution by such fishing lamps, data for seawater Type-II among the seawater types defined in 1976 are applied to East Sea. However, the Type-II data have limitations in analyzing precise seawater transmission characteristics, due to insufficient information on deep seawater. This paper analyzed the irradiance distribution of fishing lamps using the measurement of transmission characteristics in the seawater in East Sea up to 100 m underwater instead of Type-II data, which is not sufficient for transmission. A compensation factor was drawn between the actual measurement data and Type-II data through seawater transmission characteristics simulation.

  • KEPCO is faced with a number of network choice for Distribution Automation System(DAS), such as Power Line, Pair. Coaxial and Optical Cable, etc. The increasing use of DAS requires suitable communication networks. KEPCO has exhausted much efforts to implement its own standard DAS in possible early date. This paper presents the DAS in KEPCO and some of initial design efforts toward KEPCO's DAS at KEPRI.
