Optical interferometer is used for various optical measurement fields in optical metrology and biomedical measurements. In an optical interferometer, optical delay line has to change the optical path length of a reference arm to match with that of a sample in and it's speed was limited by reference arm movement speed. In this paper, we proposed an all-fibered RSODRapid Scanning-speed Optical Delay) without any mechanical movement, and we applied this system to optical interferometer. Experimental setup is consist of pulse laser source (center wavelength 1304nm, pulse width 30ps, repetition rate 10GHz), two phase modulators and dispersive shifted fiber. As experimental results, we obtain the maximum time delay of 11ps at 10MHz repetition rate, and it is easily tuneable the time delay by modulation frequency and modulation voltage.
We have transferred highly stable 100 MHz RF through a 23 km fiber network. The fiber-induced phase noise due to the vibration and the temperature fluctuation in the optical path is detected and is compensated by configuring a noise-canceling servo. The transfer instability was $6{\times}10^{14}$ at 1 s of averaging time and $2{\times}10^{-17}$ at 10000 s of averaging time. The single sideband phase noise was greatly reduced by more than 20 dB below the Fourier frequency of 1 kHz. The transferred RF has nearly the same stability as the original reference frequency.
A detector for monitoring carbon monoxide (CO) in ambient air by nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy has been developed and investigated its sensitivity and stability. The essential parts of the absorption cell are three spherical concave mirrors so as to improve the sensitivity by increasing the light path length in the cell. The radius and center of curvature of mirrors and position in the cell was calculated by computer simulation in order that the light path length may be 16m into the 50cm cell. The number of traversals and optical path properties were confirmed by laser beam alignment in transparent absorption cell. The photoconductive type lead selenide (PbSe) was used as CO sensing material, which was cooled to increase the responsibility by thermoelectric cooling method. The detection limit and span drift of the developed CO detector was 0.24ppm and 0.03ppm(v/v) respectively.
The present study measured the light transmission to quantify the smoke density(smoke mass concentration) through the doorway in a compartment fire and performed the uncertainty analysis to evaluate the reliability of the measurement technique. The optical light extinction method based on Bourguer's law was applied to estimate the smoke density of doorway exhausting smoke flow in upper layer of a compartment for methane gas fires. The measurement uncertainty of the light extinction measurement was evaluated for the light transmittance, path length, and specific mass extinction coefficient and the expanded uncertainty was estimated about 20% with confidence level of 95%. The mean smoke density through the doorway for the methane fire was calculated for quasi-steady fire and the smoke density linearly increased as the GER increased.
Protection of user service becomes increasingly important since even very short interruption of service due to link or node failure will cause huge data loss and incur tremendous restoration cost in high speed network environment. Thus fast and efficient protection and restoration is one of the most important issues to be addressed. Protection methods have been proposed to provide efficiency and stability in optical networks. In this paper, an original network is separated into several domains using Hamiltonian cycle. and link protection is performed on the cycles of the domains. We have shown that protection path length can be decreased up to $57{\%}$ with marginal increase of backup capacity. Our proposed method can provide high-speed protection with marginal increase of protection capacity.

A 2D/3D complex optical system and its vision inspection algerian is proposed and implemented as a single probe system for high speed, precise vision inspection of the solder pastes. One pass un length labeling algorithm is proposed instead of the conventional two pass labeling algorithm for fast extraction of the 2D shape of the solder paste image from the recent line-scan camera as well as the conventional area-scan camera, and the optical probe path generation is also proposed for the efficient 2D/3D inspection. The Moire interferometry-based phase shift algerian and its optical system implementation is introduced, instead of the conventional laser slit-beam method, for the high precision 3D vision inspection. All of the time-critical algorithms are MMX SIMD parallel-coded for further speedup. The proposed system is implemented for simultaneous 2D/3D inspection of 10mm${\times}$10mm FOV with resolutions of 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for both x, y axis and 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for z axis. Experiments conducted on several nBs show that the 2D/3D inspection of an FOV, excluding an image capturing, results in high speed of about 0.011sec/0.01sec, respectively, after image capturing, with $\pm$1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ height accuracy.

In fiber optic networks, system size and cost can be significantly reduced by development of optical components through planar optical waveguides. One important step to realize the compact optical devices is to develop planar optical amplifier to compensate the losses in splitter or other components. Planar amplifier provides optical gain in devices less than tens of centimeters long, as opposed to fiber amplifiers with lengths of typically tens of meters. To achieve the same amount of gain between the planar and fiber optical amplifier, much higher Er doping levels responsible for the gain than in the fiber amplifier are required due to the reduced path length. These doping must be done without the loss of homogeniety to minimize Er ion-ion interactions which reduce gain by co-operative upconversion. Sol-gel process has become a feasible method to allow the incorporation of Er ion concentrations higher than conventional glass melting methods. In this work, Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$$O_3$ films were prepared by two different method via sol -Eel process. Tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)/aluminum secondary butoxide [Al (OC$_4$$H_{9}$)$_3$], methacryloxypropylcnethoxysaane(MPTS)/aluminum secondary butofde [Al(OC$_4$$H_{9}$)$_3$] systems were used as starting materials for hosting Er ions. Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$$O_3$ films obtahed after heat-treating, coatings on Si substrate were characterized by X-ray din action, FT-IR, and N-IR fluorescence spectroscopy. The luminescence properties for two different processing procedure will be compared and discussed from peak intensity and life time.

Absorption spectra for a quantitative analysis of actinide elements such as U(VI) and Pu(V) were measured by using a liquid waveguide capillary cell (LWCC) which has an optical path length of 1.0 meter. In order to investigate radioactive elements, a LWCC is installed in a glove box and is coupled to a spectrophotometer with optical fibers. Limits of detection (LOD) for the system were determined as 0.74 and 0.35 M with molar absorption coefficients of 8.14${\pm}$0.07 (414 nm) and 17.00${\pm}$0.16 (569 nm) $M^{-1}cm^{-1}$ for U(VI) and Pu(V) ions, respectively. The measured LOD values are about 30 times more sensitive when compared to those achievable by using a conventional quartz cell with an optical path length of 1.0 cm. As an application with an enhanced sensitivity, a quantitative analysis for micromolar concentrations of Pu(V) has been performed to decrease the uncertainty in the formation constant of the Pu(VI)-OH complex.

A project for construction of Korea Geodetic VLBI has officially started in Oct. 2008. The construction of all system will be completed by the end of 2011. The project was named Korea VLBI system for Geodesy (KVG), and its main purpose is to maintain the Korea Geodetic Datum. In case of the KVG system, an observation room where an H-maser frequency standard is located is in a building separated from an antenna by several tens of meters. Therefore KVG system will adopt a so-called round-trip system to transmit reference signals to the antenna with diminishing the effect of path length variations. KVG's round-trip system is designed not only available to use either metal or optical fiber cables, but also available to measure path length variations directly by using K5/VSSP32 sampler. We will present principle of round-trip system and the new type of round trip system for KVG.
Ultra-high brightness and thin displays need to optical micro-patterns which can uniformly diffuse the lights and low loss. The micro random patterns have characteristics to rise the optical efficiency such as light extraction, uniform diffusion. For this reason, various fabrication processes are studied for random patterns. In this study, the micro random patterns were machined by diamond turning which used a controlled cutting tool path with random cutting depth. The machined patterns had random shape and directionality along the circumferential direction. The average width and length of machined random pattern according to rotation radius were 40.13㎛~55.51㎛ and 37.25㎛~59.49㎛, and these results were compared with the designed result. Also, the machining error according to rotation radius in diamond turning using randomly controlled cutting depth was discussed.
