  • Fiber optic current sensors based on polarization-rotated reflection interferometry are demonstrated by incorporating them into polymeric optical waveguide components, including polarization-maintaining 3-dB couplers, TE-pass waveguide polarizers, and thermooptic phase modulators. To remove the bending induced birefringence, optical fiber coil is annealed at $850^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The reflection interferometry comprising polymer waveguide devices exhibit a highly stable output signal corresponding to the flowing current.

  • In the present investigation, holographic interferometry was utilized for the first time to monitor in situ the thickness of the oxide film of aluminium samples during anodization processes in boric acid solutions. The anodization process (oxidation) of the aluminium samples was carried out by the technique of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), in different concentrations of boric acid (0.5-5.0% $H_3BO_3$) at room temperature. In the mean time, the real-time holographic interferometry was used to measure the thickness of anodized (oxide) film of the aluminium samples in solutions. Consequently, holographic interferometry is found very useful for surface finish industries especially for monitoring the early stage of anodization processes of metals, in which the thickness of the anodized film of the aluminium samples can be determined without any physical contact. In addition, measurements of electrochemical values such as the alternating current (A.C) impedance(Z), the double layer capacitance($C_{dl}$), and the polarization resistance(Rp) of anodized films of aluminium samples in boric acid solutions were made by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). Attempts to measure electrochemical values of Z, Cdl, and Rp were not possible by holographic interferometry in boric acid especially in low concentrations of the acid. This is because of the high rate of evolutions of interferometric fringes during the anodization process of the aluminium samples in boric acid, which made measurements of Z, Cdl, and Rp are difficult.

  • This paper describes the speckle shearing interferometry, a non-destructive optical method, for quantitative estimation of void defect and monitoring separation defect inside of a pneumatic tire. Previous shearing interferometry has not supplied quantitative result of inside defect, due to effective factors. In the study, factors related to the details of an inside defect are classified and optimized with pipeline simulator. The size and the shape of defect can be estimated accurately to find a critical point and also is closely related with shearing direction. The technique is applied for quantitative estimation of defects inside of a pneumatic tire. The actual traveling tire is monitored to reveal the cause of separation and the starting points. And also unknown void defects on tread are inspected and the size and shape of defects are estimated which has good agreement with the result of visual inspection.

  • This paper presents an extended Twyman-Green interferometry that enables simultaneous and real-time measurement of 5-DOF motion errors of the translational moving stage. This method uses a null balancing technique in which two plane mirrors are used as target mirrors to generate an interferometric fringe utilizing the optical principles of Twyman-Green interferometry. Fringe is detected by 2D photodiode array for high-speed measurement. Errors are then independently suppressed by activation of piezoelectric actuators through real-time feedback control while the machine axis is moving. Experimental results demonstrate that a machine axis can be controlled with motion errors about 10 nm in linear displacement, 0.15 arcsec in angular displacement

  • Holographic interferometry, an electromagnetic method, was used to study corrosion of carbon steel, aluminum and copper nickel alloys in NaOH, KCI and $H_2SO_4$ solutions respectively. The technique, called electrochemical emission spectroscopy, consisted of in-situ monitoring of changes in the number of fringe evolutions during the corrosion process. It allowed a detailed picture of anodic dissolution rate changes of alloys. The results were compared to common corrosion measurement methods such as linear polarization resistance measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A good agreement between both data was found, thus indicating that holographic interferometry can be a very powerful technique for in-situ corrosion monitoring.

  • The ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) is a real time, full-field, non-destructive optical measurement technique that allows static and dynamic deformation analysis and surface shape measurements of engineering structures. e .g. turbine blades. vehicle engine components, body panels, etc. This technique is very similar to holographic interferometry, but uses a solid static camera and an image processing board for recording and digital processing of speckle patterns. In this paper it is presented that FEM results for the free vibration of symmetrically laminated composite as [30/-30/90]s. The natural frequencies of laminated composite rectangular plates having the particular boundary condition are experimentally obtained. In order to demonstrate the validity of the experiment, FEM analysis using ANSYS was performed and natural frequencies experimentally obtained is compared with calculation by FEM analysis. The results obtained from both experiment and FEM analysis show a good agreement.

  • Conventional measurement methods for non-destructive testing(NDT) in nuclear power plants and other industrial plants have been performed as the methods of contact with objects to be inspect, but those methods have been taken relatively much time to be inspected. Holographic interferometry which is a non-contact optical measurement method using a coherent light can overcome these demerit, and also has an advantage that the quantitative measurement of small deformation for large areas can be accomplished at a time with high precision. In this paper the comparisons of the experimental results form holographic interferometry with those from the finite element method(FEM) and the analytical solutions of the elastic equation are discussed.

  • The simple and effective optical technique synthesizing holographic interferometry and speckle photography is presented. The optical system used in this experiment is based on image holography. A cantilever beam located on the precision translator is used to evaluate this measurement system. Experimental results agree well with the actual displacements within the error of 2.8%. As an its application, three dimensional contact deformation in the ball indentation is measured by using this optical system and compared with the numerical analysis by finite element method.
