  • Simulations of the thermally-induced residual stresses and birefringence in freely quenched plates of polycarbonate were performed by using the linear viscoelastic and photoviscoelastic constitutive equations for the mechanical and optical properties, respectively, and the first order rate equation for volume relaxation. The predictions for the birefringence showed good agreement with experimental measurements. Based on the simulation, the influences of various cooling conditions on the residual stress and birefringence in plates were investigated. The residual stress and birefringence increased with increasing initial temperature, decreasing coolant temperature and increasing heat transfer coefficient of coolants.

  • Over the last decade, the study of the synthesis of semiconductor colloidal quantum dots has progressed at a tremendous rate. Colloidal quantum dots, which possess unique spectral-luminescent characteristics, are of great interest in the development of novel materials and devices, which are promising for use in various fields. Several studies have been carried out on hot injection synthesis methods. However, these methods have been found to be unsuitable for large-capacity synthesis. Therefore, this review paper introduces synthesis methods other than the hot injection synthesis method, to synthesize quantum dots with excellent optical properties, through continuous synthesis and large capacity synthesis. In addition, examples of the application of synthesized colloid quantum dots in displays, solar cells, and bio industries are provided.

  • In the annular Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process using two concentric tubes, the inner tube is heated to maintain high temperature gradients to have high thermophoretic force which can increase particle deposition efficiency. However, higher axial velocity in a narrow gap between inner and outer tubes can result in a longer tapered entry length. In the present paper, a new concept using an annular jet from the inner tube is presented and shown to significantly reduce the tapered entry length with maintaining high efficiency. Effects of a jet injection on heat transfer, fluid flow and particle deposition have been studied. Of particular interests are the effects of jet velocity, jet location and temperature on the deposition efficiency and tapered length . Torch heating effects from both the previous and present passes are included and the effect of surface radiation between inner and outer tubes is also considered.

  • In order to meet the optical performance in the process of the micro lens manufacturing with plastics, it is important to embody accuracy in shape and surface roughness to the intended design. Since it is difficult to machine exactly the mold core of lens fit to the designed shape, in this paper, a simple program using MATLAB is developed for shape correction of the mold core after first machining it. This program evaluates correction parameters(aspheric coefficients and curvature) and generates aspheric NC data for compensating the core surface in prior machining process. The program provides the way to manufacture plastic injection molding lens with aspheric shape of high precision, and is expected to be effective for correction and to shorten the processing time.

  • Analyzing pentacene field effect transistors (FETs) with Au source and drain electrodes as Maxwell-Wagner effect elements, electron and hole injection from the Au electrodes into the FET channel were examined using current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. Based on these results, a mechanism of the hole and electron injection into pentacene from the Au electrodes and subsequently recombination mechanism with light-emitting in the pentacene layer are discussed, with taking into account the presence of trapped charges.

  • We analyzed the changes in electrical and optical characteristics of 1 $mm^2$ multiple-quantum-well (MQW) blue LEDs grown on a c-plane sapphire substrate after a stress test. Experiments were performed by injecting 50 mA current for 200 hours to TO-CAN packaged sample chips. We selected the value of injection current for stress through the junction-temperature measurement by using the forward-voltage characteristics of a diode to maintain a sufficiently low junction temperature during the test. The junction temperature at the selected injection current of 50 mA was 308 K. Experiments were performed under the assumption that the average junction temperature of 308 K did not affect the characteristics of the ohmic contact and the GaN-based materials. Before and after the stress test, we measured and analyzed current-voltage, light-current, light distribution on the LED surface, wavelength spectrum and relative external quantum efficiency (EQE). After the stress test, it was observed experimentally that the optical power and the relative EQE decreased. We theoretically investigated and experimentally proved that these phenomena are due to the increased nonradiative recombination rate caused by the increased defect density.

  • LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD unit and it consists of several optical sheets(such as prism, diffuser and protector sheets), LCP (Light Guide Plate), light source (CCFL or LED) and mold frame. The LGP of LCD-BLU is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50{\sim}200{\mu}m$ in diameter on it by erosion method. But the surface of the erosion dots of LGP is very rough due to the characteristics of the erosion process during the mold fabrication, so that its light loss is high along with the dispersion of light into the surface. Accordingly, there is a limit in raising the luminance of LCD-BLU. In order to overcome the limit of current dot patterned LGP, optical pattern design with $50{\mu}m$ micro-lens was applied in the present study. Especially, the negative and positive micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LiGA with thermal reflow process was applied to the optical design of LGP. The attention was paid to the effects of different pattern conditions to the brightness distribution of BLU with micro-lens patterned LGP. Finally, negative micro-lens patterned LGP showed superior results to the one made by positive in average luminance.

  • We demonstrate a distributed fiber sensor system based on spatially-selective Brillouin scattering, using a single laser diode as a light source whose optical frequency is directly modulated by the injection current. The pump and the counter-propagating probe lights, which are sinusoidally frequency-modulated, are superposed in the fiber so that stimulated Brillouin scattering takes places only at a specific location along the fiber. Brillouin gain peak position is controlled by varying the modulation frequency. Distributions of Brillouin shift frequency are measured for the case of concatenated optical fibers of two different kinds and also for the case of temperature distribution. The temperature coefficient of the Brillouin shift frequency is measured to be $1.33MHz/^{\circ}C$.

  • We demonstrate here an optical measurement technique to quantify the spin-orbit torques. The magnetization dynamics induced by the spin-orbit torques with a sinusoidal current injection is measured by use of polar magneto-optical Kerr effect. The measured signal is then analyzed based on the Landau-Lifhshitz-Gilbert equation with consideration of the spin-orbit torques. The present measurement technique is applied to Pd/Co/Pt films and then, the longitudinal and transverse components of the spin-orbit torques are successfully quantified. The present optical technique provides an alternative way to quantify the spin-orbit torques.

  • In this study, a compact, picosecond, mid-infrared 3.8 ㎛ MgO:PPLN optical parametric oscillator (OPO) laser output with high peak power is realized using a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) 1 ㎛ solid-state laser seeded by a picosecond fiber laser as the pump source. The pump source was a 50 MHz and 10 ps fiber seed source. After AOM pulse selection and two-stage solid-state amplification, a 1,064 nm laser output with a repetition frequency of 1-2 MHz, pulse width of 9.5 ps, and a maximum average power of 20 W was achieved. Furthermore, a compact short cavity with a unsynchronized pump is adopted through the design of an OPO cavity structure. When the injection pump power was 15 W and the repetition frequency was 1 MHz, the average output power of idler light was 1.19 W, and the corresponding peak power was 119 kW. The optical conversion efficiency was 7.93%. When the repetition frequency was increased to 2 MHz, the average output power of idler light was 1.63 W, the corresponding peak power was 81.5 kW, and the optical conversion efficiency was 10.87%. At the same time, the output wavelength was measured at 3,806 nm, and the beam quality was MX2 = 3.21 and MY2 = 3.34.
