  • Aberration is still a problem for making augmented reality displays. The existing methods to solve this problem are either slow and inefficient, consume too much battery, or are too complex for straightforward implementation. There are still some problems with image quality, and users may suffer from eye strain and headaches because the images provided to each eye lack accuracy, causing the brain to receive mismatched cues between the vergence and accommodation of the eyes. In this paper, we implemented a computer simulation of an optical aberration using Zernike polynomials which are defocus, trefoil, coma, and spherical. The research showed that these optical aberrations impact the Point Spread Function (PSF) and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). We employed the phase conjugate technique to mitigate aberrations. The findings revealed that the most significant impact on the PSF and MTF comes from the influence of spherical aberration and coma aberration.

  • This paper presents a new moving obstacle detection method using an optical flow in mobile robot with an omnidirectional camera. Because an omnidirectional camera consists of a nonlinear mirror and CCD camera, the optical flow pattern in omnidirectional image is different from the pattern in perspective camera. The geometry characteristic of an omnidirectional camera has influence on the optical flow in omnidirectional image. When a mobile robot with an omnidirectional camera moves, the optical flow is not only theoretically calculated in omnidirectional image, but also investigated in omnidirectional and panoramic images. In this paper, the panoramic image is generalized from an omnidirectional image using the geometry of an omnidirectional camera. In particular, Focus of expansion (FOE) and focus of contraction (FOC) vectors are defined from the estimated optical flow in omnidirectional and panoramic images. FOE and FOC vectors are used as reference vectors for the relative evaluation of optical flow. The moving obstacle is turned out through the relative evaluation of optical flows. The proposed algorithm is tested in four motions of a mobile robot including straight forward, left turn, right turn and rotation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the experimental results.

  • Single point diamond turning technique fur optical crystals is reported in this paper. The main factors influencing the machined surface quality are discovered and regularities of machining process are drawn. Optical crystals have found more and more important applications in the field of modern optics. Optical crystals are mostly brittle materials of poor machinability. The traditional machining method is polishing which has many shortcomings such as low production efficiency, poor ability to be automatically controlled and edge effect of the workpiece. SPDT has been widely used in manufacturing optical reflectors of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper which are easy to be machined for their proper ductility. But optical crystals being discussed here are characterized by their high brittleness which makes it difficult to obtain high quality optical surfaces on them. The purpose of cur research is to find the optimum machining conditions for ductile cutting of optical crystals and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of brittle materials. As a result, the cutting force is steady, the cutting force range is 0.05-0.08N. The surface roughness is good when spindle is above 1400rpm. and feed rate is small. The influence of depth of cut is very small.

  • Si nanowires have exhibited unique optical characteristics, including nano-antenna effects due to the guided mode resonance, significant optical absorption enhancement in wide wavelength and incident angle range due to resonant optical modes, graded refractive index, and scattering. Since Si poor optical absorption coefficient due to indirect bandgap, all such properties have stimulated proposal of new optoelectronic devices whose performance can surpass that of conventional planar devices. We have carried out finite-difference time-domain simulation studies to design optimal Si nanowire array for solar cell applications. Optical reflectance, transmission, and absorption can be calculated for nanowire arrays with various diameter, length, and period. From the absorption, maximum achievable photocurrent can be estimated. In real devices, serious recombination loss occurring at the surface states is known to limit the photovoltaic performance of the nanowire-based solar cells. In order to address such issue, we will discuss how the geometric parameters of the array can influence the spatial distribution of the optical field (resulting optical generation rate) in the nanowires.

  • We research a system of compressed-sensing computational ghost imaging (CSCGI) based on the intensity fluctuation brought by turbulence. In this system, we used the gamma-gamma intensity-fluctuation model, which is commonly used in transmission systems, to simulate the CSCGI system. By setting proper values of the parameters such as transmission distance, refractive-index structure parameter, and sampling rates, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance and bit-error rate (BER) performance are obtained to evaluate the imaging quality, which provides a theoretical model to further research the ghost-imaging algorithm.

  • The issues that influence the packaging of high-speed LiNbO$_{3}$ modulators are discussed, and packaging approaches that result in only minor degradation of the modulator's RF performance are described. The primary problems dealt in this paper, associated with high-speed device packaging, are fallen into the following five categories: die features, pigtailing, suppression of RF package resonance, RF launcher approach, termination approach. By considering factors to influence the modulator performance in packaging, a LiNbO$_{3}$ intensity modulator was fabricated and packaged to have S21 better than -3㏈ upto 10㎓ and S11 below -l5㏈ upto 18㎓.

  • To investigate influence of the incident beams which have the truncated Gaussian amplitude and of the shapes of bump on read-out signal is an optical disc, and the point spread function on bump, the scalar diffraction theory is used in this paper. We consider the truncated Gaussian amplitudes which are $\sigma$=0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5, the height of bump which is given by $n{\Delta}_0={\lambda}/4$, and the phase height of bump which is then given by ${\Phi}_0={\pi}$. We also consider the shapes of the bump which are a rectangular shape, a frustoconical shape, and a conical shape. It is shown that as the truncation of incident beam reduces the radius of central spot on bump decreases, the maximum value of read-out signal increases, and that the size of bump decreases. From these results, we get better read-out signal and the reduced cross-talk in optical disc when the truncation of incident beam reduces. Therefore a laser beam having less truncated Gaussian amplitude may useful for an actual optical disc.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • This paper examines the temperature characteristics of an Optical CT (optical current transformer) using the Faraday effect for measuring high current in a super high voltage-power apparatus. It is performed as follows by the sensor for embodying Faraday effect. $\cdot$ A single-mode optical fiber capable of maintaining a polarization state is used. $\cdot$ A light source is applied at 1310[nm] to a Laser Diode. $\cdot$ The Linear of Faraday effect to a large current is evaluated and $\cdot$ A possible application using an Optical CT was shown. An Influence of Faraday effect to the surrounding temperature measured -40~50[$^{\circ}C$], and the characteristic of the current sensitivity was reported. An application using the results of the temperature compensation system was used in order to compensate for surrounding temperatures. A possibility of applying Optical CT for electric power apparatus was advanced further. We were able to confirm that this temperature calibration method can minimize the fluctuation of the output signal depending on the temperature conditions.

  • A highly sensitive optical-fiber humidity sensor is demonstrated in this paper. By using Nafion-PVA sol-gel and single-mode optical fibers, the Fabry-Perot humidity sensor is easily fabricated. In the humidity range of 29%-72%, humidity-response experiments are carried out with a cycle of rising and falling humidity to investigate humidity-response characteristics. The experimental results show 2.25 nm/%RH sensitivity and a 0.9997 linear correlation coefficient, with good consistency. The changes in optical-path difference (OPD) and free spectral range (FSR) with humidity are also discussed. The humidity sensitivities of a typical sensor are 80.3 nm/%RH (OPD) and 0.03 nm/%RH (FSR). Furthermore, many humidity sensors with different Nafion-PVA sol-gel concentration and initial cavity length are experimentally investigated for humidity response. The results show that the sensitivity increases with higher Nafion ratio of the Nafion-PVA sol-gel. The influence of changing cavity length on sensitivity is not obvious. These results are helpful to research on optical-fiber humidity sensors with good performance, easy fabrication, and low cost.
