To understand the cause of the high light transmittance of the human eye, the optical effects of the collagen fibers of the stroma layer, which constitute the majority of the cornea, were analyzed. These collagen fibers, approximately 20 nm in diameter, have a regular arrangement. Accordingly, the optical properties of the collagen fibers and the fiber layer were analyzed by simulation. A standing wave was formed in the incident space by the overlapping incident light and the light reflected by the plate. In addition, it was confirmed that when the collagen fibers are arranged in a layer, the light transmittance periodically changes, depending on the number of fiber layers. The standing wave was formed in the incident space, and the light's intensity distribution was changed by the nanoscale collagen fibers in the section with the collagen layer, which affected the transmittance. To explain this phenomenon, the collagen fiber was defined as a second light source, and an attempt was made to describe the simulation results in terms of overlap of the incident light with the light emitted from the collagen fiber.

Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . (omitted)
An Er-doped superfluorescent fiber source is designed and constructed with the double-pass forward configuration, which aims at high stability of its mean wavelength against temperature variation. As a result, thermal stability of mean wavelength better than 1 ppm is obtained against the temperature variation of ${\pm}5^{\circ}C$ around the optimum operating temperature. The optimum operating temperature can be tuned with the Er-doped fiber length and the pump power.

The objective of this research is to develop real-time failure detection techniques for damage assessment of composite materials using optical fiber sensors. Signals from matrix cracking or fiber fracture in composite laminates are treated by signal processing unit in real-time. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) to determine the time of occurrence of failure. In order to verify the performance of the optical fiber sensor for stress wave detection, we performed pencil break test with EFPI sensor and compared it with that of PZT. The EFPI sensor was embedded in composite beam to sense the failure signals and a tensile test was performed. The signals of the fiber optic sensor when damage occurred were characterized using STFT and wavelet transform. Failure detection system detected the moment of failure accurately and showed good sensitivity with the infinitesimal failure signal.

In this paper the effect of chaos induced instability in Brillouin-active fiber-ring sensor is described. The inherent optical feedback by the backscattered Stokes wave in optical fiber leads to instabilities in the form of optical chaos. The paradigm of optical chaos in fiber serves as a test for fundamental study of chaos and its suppression and exploitation in practical application in communication and sensing. At weak power, the nature of the Brillouin instability can occur at before threshold. At strong power, the temporal evolution above threshold is periodic and at higher intensity can become chaotic. The threshold for the Brillouin instability in fiber-ring sensor is much lower than the threshold of the normal Brillouin instability process.
The transmission characteristics of multi-channel long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in terms of the physical parameters like the separation distance, grating length and number of gratings will be discussed. Their transmission characteristics such as channel spacing, number of channels, loss peak depth, and channel bandwidth can be easily controlled by physical parameters. Based on the experimental results, their applications to optical multiwavelength Raman lasers and optical sensors will be investigated. A multiwavelength Raman fiber ring laser with 9 WDM channels with 100 ㎓ spacing and 19 channels with 50 ㎓ spacing using tunable multi-channel LPFGs will be experimentally demonstrated. The fiber-optic sensing applications with high resolution and sensitivity based on multi-channel LPFGs will be also presented.
Due to their high degree of freedom to transfer and acquire light, fiber optics can be used in the presence of strong magnetic fields. Hence, optical sensing and imaging based on fiber optics can be integrated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnostic systems to acquire valuable information on biological tissues and organs based on a magnetic field. In this article, we explored the combination of MRI and optical sensing/imaging techniques by classifying them into the following topics: 1) functional near-infrared spectroscopy with functional MRI for brain studies and brain disease diagnoses, 2) integration of fiber-optic molecular imaging and optogenetic stimulation with MRI, and 3) optical therapeutic applications with an MRI guidance system. Through these investigations, we believe that a combination of MRI and optical sensing/imaging techniques can be employed as both research methods for multidisciplinary studies and clinical diagnostic/therapeutic devices.
A fiber-optic interferometric temperature sensor is fabricated using a hollow optical fiber with 8 um air hole. This interferometric sensor for measuring temperature consists of 13 mm long hollow optical fiber whose one end is attached to the single mode fiber and the other end is cleaved. After the sensor is put in a furnace, the phase change of the sensor output signal is measured as the temperature of the furnace increases from $28^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The phase change of the fiber sensor is proportional to the change of temperature and the relationship between the change of phase and temperature is approximately linear. The sensitivity of this sensor is $2.7{\;}radians/^{\circ}C$.
This paper reports the fabrication of various micro-lensed single-mode optical fibers through the use of an enhanced peak power $CO_2$ laser beam. The end faces of the optical fibers are exposed to the $CO_2$ laser beam to form convex, concave, and conical shape optical fiber tips. Peak power of the $CO_2$ laser beam was varied from 0.8 W to 1.5 W depending on the shape of the optical fiber tip. We also discover the dependence of the angle of the optical fiber tip on the rotation angle and the number of $CO_2$ laser irradiations. The angle shows an increasing trend with both these parameters. We achieve a wide range of lenticular fibers with end face angle varying from $4.47^{\circ}$ to $8.13^{\circ}$. Furthermore, we investigate the emission pattern of light from the developed micro-lensed fibers. The proposed $CO_2$ laser based optical fiber reshaping technique shows great consistency, and thus is suitable for commercial applications.

Torque of a rotating shaft has been mostly measured by strain gages combined with either a slip ring or telemetry. However, these methods have severe inherent problems like low S/N ratio, high cost, limited number of channels and difficult installation. In this paper, a new method using FBG(fiber bragg grating) sensors and a rotary optical coupler for online non-contact torque monitoring is suggested. FBG sensor can measure both strain and temperature, and has much batter characteristics than those of a strain gage. A rotary optical coupler is a optical connecting device between a rotating shaft and stationary side without any physical contact. It has been devised for transmitting light between a rotating optical fiber and a stationary optical fiber. The proposed method uses this rotary optical coupler to connect FBG sensors on the rotating shaft to instruments at stationary side. And a reference FBG sensor is also applied to compensate the insertion loss change of the rotary optical coupler due to rotation. Three FBG sensors have been fabricated in a single optical fiber. Two FBG sensors are attached on the shaft surface to measure torque and one sensor is installed at the shaft center to compensate the insertion loss change. The torque of a rotating shaft has been successfully measured by the suggested method proving its superior performance potential.
