실리콘 v-groove를 이용한 광섬유-광검출기 어레이 모듈 제작 (Fabrication of the Optical Fiber-Photodiode Array Module Using Si v-groove)

  • We describe the design, fabrication, and performance of the optical fiber-photodiode 1$\times$12 arry module using mesa-type InS10.53T GaS10.47TAS/INP 1$\times$12 PIN photodiode array. We fabricated the PIN PD array for high-speed optical fiber parallel data link optimizing quantum efficiency, operating speed sensitivity from the PIN-FET structure, and electrical AC crosstalk. For each element of the array, the diameter of the photodetective area is 80 $\mu$m, the diameter of the p-metal pad is 90 $\mu$m, and the photodiode seperation is 250 $\mu$m to use Si v-groove. Ground conductor line is placed around diodes and p-metal pads are formed in zigzag to reduce Ac capacitance coupling between array elements. The dark current (IS1dT) is I nA and the capacitance(CS1pDT) is 0.9 pF at -5 V. No signifcant variations of IS1dT and CPD from element to element in the array were observed. We calulated the coupling efficiency for 10/125 SMF and 50/125 GI MMF, and measured the responsivity of the PD array at the wavelength is 1.55 $\mu$ m. Responsivities are 0.93 A/W for SMF and 0.96 A/W for MMF. The optical fiber-PD array module is useful in numerous high speed digital and analog photonic system applications.

의료영상전송시스템을 위한 POF 광커넥터의 최적 설계 (The Optimal Design of POF Optical Connector for Medical Image Transmission System)

  • For mass information transfer, the optical communication using optic fiber has been widely used. Especially, in the field of medical image, the large data is digitalized based on the standard image and it is used for telemedicine with this method. Therefore, to transfer the large amount of data fast and effectively POF (Plastic Optical Fiber) can be used and the development of optic connector for connection between POFs is very important. In this study, for stable optical coupling of POF optic fiber Ferrule and Sleeve were designed and produced by considering the bond stability and the insertion loss according to the physical contact and roughness profile was evaluated. As a result of examining the insertion loss by physical contact method of two optic fibers, it showed the loss was about 1.895dB. According to the results from studying the condition of grinding section for POF mass production, the mass production condition was established as POF profile roughness of 6nm and the loss of 0.2dB or lower by controlling the film size and time step by step.

  • Thermal expanded core (TEC) fiber can reduce, being advantaged from thermal diffusion technology, connection loss by expanding the tolerance in relation to axial offset and gap when making optical connection having mode field diameter (MFD) of optical fiber expanded locally. In this paper, TEC fiber fabrication system based on the frame brushing techniques using twin-torch tip was designed and developed in order to maintain a stable thermal diffusion and single-mode when manufacturing TEC fiber. We were able to obtain that varied kinds of TEC fibers of which MFD could have been extended between $20\;{\mu}m$ and $40\;{\mu}m$ by TEC fiber fabrication system. In addition, the characteristic of connection loss was measured by alignment two TEC fibers of which MFD was $30\;{\mu}m$.

  • The effective cutoff wavelength of $LP_11$mode is measured as a function of fiber length for three types of single-mode optical fiber which have different characteristics in the index profile or the coating structure. The measured cutoff wavelength decreased linearly in a logarithmic scale of fiber length as increasing fiber length, and eventually became constant after 3km for two fiber types. It is found that the length dependence of cutoff wavelength is due to a mode coupling between the $LP_01$ and $LP_11$ modes.

  • We have investigated the optical characteristics of a directional coupler made of a side-polished polarization maintaining fiber in contact with a multimode planar waveguide and its applications as sensors. A device structural condition to achieve the polarization insensitive wavelength response has been presented. The fabricated devices revealed a superior immunity to the bending and the deformation of PM fibers in the input section. It is experimentally shown that the proposed device is suitable for a remote fiber sensor.

  • 플라스틱 광섬유의 주기적인 bending을 이용한 누설광섬유에 기반을 둔 라인램프를 제안하고, 그 핵심요소로서 높은 광결합효율을 갖는 LED-광섬유 결합기를 설계 및 해석하였다. Monte Carlo photon simulation 기법을 이용하여 해석한 결과, 결합기의 광결합효율은 반사컵 옆면의 기울기각 $\theta_w$와 반사컵의 반사도 $\rho_{ref}$에 대해 상대적으로 민감하게 영향을 받는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 광결합효율은 $\theta_w=60^{\circ}C$ 근처에서 최대가 되었는데, 이 값은 일반적인 LED 램프에서 흔히 사용하는 반사컵 옆면의 기울기각 $\theta_w=45^{\circ}$보다 상당히 큰 값이다. 그리고 반사컵의 반사도 $\rho_{ref}$가 0.8정도 이상이 되면, 광결합효율은 보통의 LD-광섬유 결합기에서 얻을 수 있는 광결합효율인 80% 정도를 뛰어 넘었다.

Comparative Study of Uniform and Nonuniform Grating Couplers for Optimized Fiber Coupling to Silicon Waveguides

  • We have investigated the ultimate limits of nonuniform grating couplers (NGCs) for optimized fiber coupling to silicon waveguides, compared to uniform grating couplers (UGCs). Simple grating coupler schemes, which can be fabricated in etching steps of the conventional complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers without forming any additional overlay structure, have been simulated numerically and demonstrated experimentally. Optimum values of the grating period, fill factor, and groove number for ultimate coupling efficiency of the NGCs are determined from finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, and confirmed with experimentally demonstrated devices by comparison to those for the UGCs. Our simulated results indicate that maximum coupling efficiency of NGCs is possible when the minimum pattern size is below 50 nm, but the experimental value for the maximum coupling efficiency is limited by the attainable fabrication tolerance in a practical device process.

양방향 송수신모듈 제작을 위한 광결합계수의 계산 및 측정 (Calculation and measurement of optical coupling coefficient for bi-directional tancceiver module)

  • 레이저 다이오드와 수신광검출기가 집적된 소자를 V-홈을 가진 실리콘 광학벤치에 flip-chip 본딩하고, 경사면을 가진 하나의 단일모드 광섬유와 수동정렬하는 방법을 사용하여 가입자망을 위한 저가의 양방향 송수신 모듈을 설계, 제작하였다. 광섬유의 단면 경사각에 따른 송신광결합 효율과 수신광결합 효율사이의 병목점을 찾기 위해 Gaussian빔 모델을 사용하여 수평정렬거리, 광섬유 단면 경사각, 수직정렬오차등의 변수에 따른 광결합계수를 계산함으로써, 최적의 광정렬조건을 예측하였다. 또한 실리콘 광학벤치에서 광결합효율을 측정하여 광섬유의 수직정렬오차에 따른 광결합계수의 감소가 광섬유의 경사각에 의해 보상될 수 있다는 계산결과의 타당함을 확인하였다. 실제의 sub-module 제작 및 광결합 실험에서 송신빔이 광섬유 단면에 반사되어 PD로 입사되는 것을 최소화하기 위하여 광섬유 단면을 경사절두원추형으로 제작함으로써 PD의 수신 잡음을 $30mu$m 이상의 정렬거리에서 -35dB이하로 유지할 수 있었다. 같은 조건에서 단면 경사각이 $12^{\circ}$인 광섬유에 의해 -12.1dB의 송신출력과 0.2A/W의 responsivity를 얻을 수 있었다.

광통신용 taper형 광 결합기의 해석 (Analysis of taper-foremd optical coupler for the optical communication)

  • 단일모드 광섬유와 박막도파로 소자들 사이의 효율적인 광전송은 집적광학 시스템의 실현을 위해서 가장 기본적으로 풀어야 하는 필수적인 과제중의 하나인데, 이 때 광섬유와 도파로를 직접 접속시키는 방법은 접속면에서의 필드분포의 불일치로 인해 많은 양의 광전력이 반사되고 발산이 예상된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 박막도파로와 광섬유의 접속시 경계면에서의 필드분포의 불일치를 피하기위해 uniform 형과 taper 형의 결합 구조를 박막도파로위에 성장시켜 접속시키는 구조를 제안하고 해석하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과 이들 구조가 광섬유로부터 결합도파로 안으로 광파가 전송되면 이후에 박막도파로로 효율적으로 광결합이 일어남을 보였고, 특히 taper 형태의 결합구조가 uniform 형태의 결합구조보다 결합효율 및 소자 제조측면에서 휠씬 더 바람직한 구조임이 증명되었다.
