  • We fabricated and characterized a compact endoscopic catheter for optical coherence tomography. The optical delay line (ODL), composed of a cylindrical piezoelectric transducer (PZT) and an optical fiber, was operated with a 1 kHz sinusoidal driving wave in the time-domain. When the ODL was driven with a sinusoidal wave function, the axial scanning speed was 6 m/s and the axial acquisition rate was 2000 line/s at a depth of about 3 mm. Endoscopic OCT images of a human finger and earhole were successfully obtained with an image rate of ten frames per second.

  • Optical coherence tomography(OCT) is high resolution imaging system which can see the cross section of microscopic organs in the living tissue. In this paper, we analyze the relation between the light source and the resolution of modulated signal in Michelson interferometer. We construct 1-D OCT signal processing hardware such as amplifiers, filters, and demodulate electronic signals from the photo detector. In order to get 2-D OCT image, the synchronization among optical delay line, sample stage and A/D converter is dealt with. In experiments, we verify analog and digital signal processing blocks which apply to the stacks of glasses. Finally we aquire high resolution 2-D OCT image with respect to the onion tissue. We expect that this result can be applied to the medical instrument through performance improvement.

  • The near-field subwavelength squint-less focusing system of a phased array antenna is designed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. The Huygens-Fresnel principle is applied to numerical simulation for calculation of the phased array antenna at microwave frequency. It was shown that beam squinting can be eliminated, utilizing true-time optical delay lines based on a chirped fiber grating in the proposed system. Furthermore, subwavelength focusing with high numerical aperture can be achieved by considering the fact that the array elements of the phased-array antenna can be treated as diffractive elements in an optical lens system. Also, side lobes can be suppressed by decreasing the distance between element antennas to less than half of the wavelength.

  • We report the physical implementation of a tunable photonic microwave delay line filter based on injection locking of a single Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) to a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). The laser generates equally spaced multiple wavelengths and a single tapped-delay line can be obtained with a dispersive single mode fiber. The filter frequency response depends on the wavelength spacing and can be tuned by the temperature of the FP-LD varying lasing wavelength. For amplitude control of the wavelengths, we use gain saturation of the RSOA and the offset between the peak wavelengths of the FP-LD and the RSOA to decrease the amplitude difference in the wavelengths. From the temperature change of total $15^{\circ}C$, the filter, consisting of four flat wavelengths and two wavelengths with slightly lower amplitudes on both sides, has shown tunability of about 390 MHz.

  • Microwave Photonic(MWP) filters capable of use a bandpass filter or a notch filter with large bandwidth have been proposed. 4-lines${\times}$2-bit fiber-optic delay lines with a unit time-delay difference of 50 ps were experimentally realized. By changing the time-delay difference and the coefficients of microwave-modulated optical signals, the bandpass and notch filters were implemented and characterized.

  • This paper presents design andd verification of a circuit that improves the control-operation problems of Stored Program Optical Computer (SPOC), which is an optical computer using $LiNbO_3$ optical switching element. Since the memory of SPOC takes the Delay Line Memory (DLM) architecture and instructions that are needless of operands should go though memory access stages, SPOC memory have problems; it takes immoderate access time and unnecessary operations are executed in Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU) because desired operations can't be selectively executed. In this paper, improvement on circuit has been achieved by removing the memory access of instructions that are needless of operands by decoding instructions before locating operand. Unnecessary operations have been reduced by sending operands to some specific operational units, not to all the operational units in ALD. We show that total execution time of a program is minimized by using the Dual Instruction Register(DIR) architecture.

  • We propose the optical sensor network using optical CDMA with bipolar receiver and modified Pseudorandom Noise codes which are widely used in the wireless communication network. We numerically analyze the performances in the optical sensor network. In the proposed network, multiple access interferences between two sensors are suppressed by performing synchronization between the optical encoder and the optical decoder and adjusting the delay times of optical delay lines. Numerical simulations confirm that the performance can be acquired by suppressing the beat noise among optical signals as the number of sensors increases.
