  • Intracavity second harmonic generation of diode pumped solid state lasers in the visible and ultraviolet regions provide efficient, compact and robust light sources for various applications, such as optical data storage, material processing, spectroscopy and bioanalysis. Advantages of neodymium vanadate (Nd:$YVO_4$) as a gain medium for intracavity-doubled lasers over Nd:YAG lie in the facts that the gain spectrum consists of a single line with short absorption depth, and that the stimulated emission cross sections are larger. • The aspherical lens are used as objective lens of optical pickup. The sample product is made before manufacturing the injection mould of lens to examine the design factor. The optimum cutting conditions of the main spindle speed, the depth of cut, the feed rate are found when we cut PMMA and PC lens sample with ultra-precision SPDT. The demanded surface roughness 10 nm Ra, aspherical form error 0.5 ${\mu}m$ P-V for aspherical lens of optical data storage device are satisfied for PMMA, but not satisfied for PC.

  • PRAM (Phase change Random Access Memory) is one of the most promising candidates for next generation Non-volatile Memories. The Phase change material has been researched in the field of optical data storage media. Among the phase change materials, $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$(GST) is very well known for its high optical contrast in the state of amorphous and crystalline. However, the characteristics required in solid state memory are quite different from optical ones. In this study, the structural properties of GST thin films with bottom electrode were investigated for PRAM. The 100-nm thick GST films were deposited on TiN/Si and TiAlN/Si substrates by RF sputtering system. In order to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of these films, we performed x-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

  • Novel liquid crystalline malonic ester monomers were synthesized from malonyl dichloride and mesogenic alcohols as a photoresponsive group. The monomers were polymerized with aliphatic or aromatic dibromides in the presence of sodium hydride to give 8 kinds of novel poly(malonic esters) with two symmetrical azobenzene groups. We found that the resulting polymer films could be used as rewritable optical data storage (or holographic image) media through a photoisomerization of azobenzene group by Ar laser irradiation. The sensitivity of data recording was dependent not only on the thickness of the polymeric thin film but also on the intensity of laser beam.

  • The mission of the EO(electro-optical) based low earth orbit satellite is provision of the high-resolution images required for GIS(Geographical Information Systems) establishment and the applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring. AEISS(Advanced Earth Imaging Sensor System) which is the main payload on the satellite consists of EOS(electro-optical subsystem) and PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Sub-system). IDHU(Image Data Handling Unit) which is one of the major unit in PDTS is capable of compression, storage, encryption and encoding. In this paper, the payload system of the EO based satellite is briefly introduced and the influence of the compression on AEISS is analyzed.

  • We present experimental results on the multiplexed and stack-wise recording of near-field holograms. Experiments on angular multiplexing show that the angular selectivity of near-field hologram is better than that of the conventional hologram. Experiments on stack-wise recording prove that near-fields originated from sub-diffraction-limit-size objects could be stored in a photorefractive crystal at 2mm apart from the crystal surface. In addition, to improve the data access and transfer time, a silicon nano-aperture array was introduced and applied to the recording of near-field holograms.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is developing three 1.6m optical telescopes with $18k{\times}18k$ mosaic CCD cameras. These telescopes will be installed and operated at Chile, South Africa, and Australia for Korea Micro-lensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) project. The main scientific goal of the project is to discover earth-like extra-solar planets using the gravitational micro-lensing technique. To achieve the goal, each telescope at three sites will continuously monitor the specific region of Galactic bulge with 2.5 minute cadence for five years. Assuming 12 hour observation in maximum for a night, the amount of 200 GB file storage is required for one night observation at one observatory. If we consider the whole project period and the data processing procedure, a few PB class data storage, high-speed network, and high performance computers are essential. In this presentation, we introduce the KMTNet data management plan that handles gigantic data; raw image collecting, image processing, photometry pipeline, database archiving, and backup.

  • KOMPSAT -2 equipped with an optical telescope(MSC) will be launched in this year. It can take images of the earth with push-broom scanning at altitude 685Km. Its resolution is 1m in panchromatic channel with a swath width of 15 km After the MSC is tested and the performance is measured at instrument level, it is installed on satellite. The image passes through the electro-optical system, compression and storage unit and fmally downlink sub-systems. This integration procedure necessitates the functional test of all subsystems participating in the image chain. The objective of functional test at satellite level(Quick Look test) is to check the functionality of image chain by real target image. Collimated moving image is input to the EOS in order to simulate the operational environments as if KOMPSAT -2 is being operated in orbit. The image chain from EOS to data downlink subsystem will be verified through Quick Look test. This paper explains the Quick Look test of KOMPSAT -2 and compares the taken images with collimated input ones.

  • There has recently been a considerable amount of interest in two-photon(TP) processes because of their applications to 3-D optical data storage and imaging, up-conversion lasing, and optical power limiting. Recently, the role of Dithienothlophene(DTT) as $\pi$-center of two-photon absorption(TPA) molecules was reported to give a large enhancement of TPA, compared with the benzeniods counterparts.$^{[1]}$ In this report, we carried out two experiments to investigate nonlinear optical absorption of the molecules in which central DTT is attached through conjugation to either a D/D or a D/A pair at the ends, forming a D-$\pi$-D(1 and 3) or D-$\pi$-A(2 and 4) sequence(Fig.1). All the samples were prepared in solutions with the same molar concentration. (omitted)

  • An archive system is designed to store data for a long time without loss. However, many important factors such as temperature, dust, vibration, and humidity must be considered to design a successful archive system. Read/write devices, for example optical disk drives(ODDs), in an archive system generate heat while they are in operation. Fans are usually used to remove heat but the air flow accompanies dust into the system result in system failure. In this study, an archive system with six ODDs is chosen as an analysis model and flow together with temperature distributions are computed using a CFD simulation package. Flow analysis is focused on four cooling fans at the rear panel and temperature distribution is studied for various cases of fan operation. From the temperature point of view, fans give significant effects on $4^{th}$ to $6^{th}$ ODDs compared to the $1^{st}$ to $3^{rd}$ ODDs. Also, it is noticed which fan is the most important as far as cooling is concerned.
