Investigation of Performance Limitations of SCM/WDM Systems Using Optical DSB Modulation and 16 QAM Signals (광 이중 측파대 변조 방식과 16 QAM 신호를 이용한 부반송파/파장 분할 다중화 시스템의 성능 분석에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance limitations of SubCarrier Multiplexed(SCM) WDM systems using optical Double-Side Band(DSB) modulated 16 QAM signals. The Bit-Error Rate(BER) performance is evaluated under various optical transmission links including the effects of the dispersion and fiber nonlinearities such as SPM(Self-Phase Modulation) and XPM(cross-phase modulation). After simulation of SCM-WDM systems, the dominant factors determining the entire system performance are appeared to be the nonlinearity of MZ(Mach-Zehnder) modulator and the SCM channel spacing. The BER performance of subcarrier channels in the higher frequencies was degraded with the large dispersion effect only, however, the performance was improved a little with a combined effect of fiber dispersion and nonlinear effect when the hish fiber launching power was applied.

  • In this paper, a trench structure was fabricated by femtosecond-laser machining to eliminate thermal crosstalk in a multichannel variable optical attenuator (VOA), to prevent decreasing attenuation efficiency of the VOA. Trenches of a variety of widths and depths were fabricated on the VOA chips by femtosecond-laser processing. After the machining, attenuation according to current change was observed in each VOA chip module with trenches. As a result, we could observe high responsivity of attenuation and low power consumption, and that the heat of each channel barely influenced other channels.

  • Last year, we introduced a TFT-LCD with RGBW color system. The primary advantage of the RGBW system is that its optical efficiency is at least 50% higher than the RGB system. However, it is not a simple task to incorporate the new color system into the infrastructure of the RGB system: the driving circuitry, fabrication of color filter, and color conversion. In this report, the practical hurdles are discussed and the solutions are presented.

  • A guide-wave electro-optical modulatored direct-ional coupler 1X2 was fabricated on LiNbO$_3$ by proton exchange with self-aligned method After proton exchange process, the waveguide is formed by annealing process, The relationship between refractive index change of waveguide and maximun output was studied a long the annealing time. A self-alinged method was used to simplify the fabrication process of the waveguide and the maximize the efficiency of electric field. The modulatored directional coupler 1${\times}$2 has very good figures of merits; The measured crosstalk was -29.5[dB] and the modulating voltage of 8.0[V].

Photolithographic Method of Patterning Barrier Ribs for PDP by Green Sheet

  • Barrier ribs in the plasma display panel(PDP) function to maintain the discharge space between the glass plates as well as to prevent optical crosstalk. Patterning of barrier ribs is one of unique processes for making PDP. In this work photosensitive barrier rib pastes were prepared by incorporating binder polymer, solvent, functional monomers photoinitiator, and barrier rib powder of which surface was treated with fumed silica particles. Study on the function of materials for the barrier rib paste were undertaken. After optimization of paste formulation and photolithographic process, it was found that photolithographic patterning of barrier ribs with photosensitive barrier rib green sheet could be used in the fabrication of high resolution PDP.

  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive.   • a wavelength division multiplexer based on a polymeric arrayed-waveguide grating has been designed and fabricated. A 4-channel multiplexer with a spacing of 3.2 nm is designe dby using te 2-dimensional beam propagation method. A UV-curable epoxy, NOA73, is used for the core layer, and a passive polymer, PMMA, for the cladding layer. The polymer waveguides are fabricated by the reactive ion etching method and their optical properties are characterized. The fabricted device has a center wavelength of 1548.3 nm, and the wavelength spacing between the channels is 3.2nm. The measured crosstalk is better than -18dB.

  • AWG designed in this paper is considered with flat passband characteristics in the channel as a method for solving frequency stability problems of the sources in the conventional optical filters. This device can acquire the flat passband characteristics by inserting the multimode wave guides utilizing the self imaging effec between input wave guides and first star coupler. BPM simulation results show that the excess loss is smaller than 6.5 dB, the crosstalk is less than -22 dB and the 1 dB passband is about 50 GHz in the central channel.

  • A compact and two-dimensional atomic force microscope (AFM) using an orthogonal sample scanner, a calibrated homodyne laser interferometer and a commercial AFM head was developed for use in the nanometrology field. The x and y position of the sample with respect to the tip are acquired by using the laser interferometer in the open-loop state, when each z data point of the AFM head is taken. The sample scanner which has a motion amplifying mechanism was designed to move a sample up to $100{\times}100{\mu}m^2$ in orthogonal way, which means less crosstalk between axes. Moreover, the rotational errors between axes are measured to ensure the accuracy of the calibrated AFM within the full scanning range. The conventional homodyne laser interferometer was used to measure the x and y displacements of the sample and compensated via an X-ray interferometer to reduce the nonlinearity of the optical interferometer. The repeatability of the calibrated AFM was measured to sub-nm within a few hundred nm scanning range.
