  • Underwater color images suffer from low visibility and color cast effects caused by light attenuation by water and floating particles. This study applied single image enhancement techniques to enhance the quality of underwater images and compared their performance with real underwater images taken in Korean waters. Dark channel prior (DCP), gradient transform, image fusion, and generative adversarial networks (GAN), such as cycleGAN and underwater GAN (UGAN), were considered for single image enhancement. Their performance was evaluated in terms of underwater image quality measure, underwater color image quality evaluation, gray-world assumption, and blur metric. The DCP saturated the underwater images to a specific greenish or bluish color tone and reduced the brightness of the background signal. The gradient transform method with two transmission maps were sensitive to the light source and highlighted the region exposed to light. Although image fusion enabled reasonable color correction, the object details were lost due to the last fusion step. CycleGAN corrected overall color tone relatively well but generated artifacts in the background. UGAN showed good visual quality and obtained the highest scores against all figures of merit (FOMs) by compensating for the colors and visibility compared to the other single enhancement methods.

  • The current visible light communication (VLC) systems have a short transmission distance and a low data rate. To overcome this, we studied on the method of appling MIMO technology to VLC. However, it is difficult to apply the original MIMO technology used in RF frequency to wireless VLC. In VLC system, a lens can be used to separate the transmitted signals. And, if we use an image sensor as the receiver, MIMO technology can be applied to LED wireless visible light communication. In this paper, we report an experiment of $2{\times}2$ LED wireless visible light communication using a commercial image sensor receiver. We show the experimental demonstration with a transmission length of 10.5 m and a data rate of 200 bit/s.

  • As the essential techniques for the CD (Critical Dimension) measurement of the LCD pattern, there are various modules such as an optics design, auto-focus [1-4], and precise edge detection. Since the operation of image enhancement to improve the CD measurement repeatability, a ring type of the reflected lighting optics is devised. It has a simpler structure than the transmission light optics, but it delivers the same output. The edge detection is the most essential function of the CD measurements. The CD measurement is a vital inspection for LCDs [5-6] and semiconductors [7-8] to improve the production yield rate, there are numbers of techniques to measure the CD. So in this study, a new subpixel algorithm is developed through facet modeling, which complements the previous sub-pixel edge detection algorithm. Currently this CD measurement system is being used in LCD manufacturing systems for repeatability of less than 30 nm.

  • The digital radiation detectors are used clinically by diagnostic apparatus. However the digital radiation detector are some problem like high operating voltage, light blurring, low conversion efficiency, low fill factor, etc. Thus we propose a new radiation detector that the photoconductor layer and liquid crystal layer are coupled in sandwich structure. X-ray absorption in the photoconductor layer controls the state of the liquid crystal via creation of charge carrier and the light modulation of liquid crystal make image formation. The advantage of the new radiation detector is that high resolution image is acquired and the signal amplification is possible by external visible light source. In this study, we study the optical properties and electrical properties of the new radiation detector to irradiate X-ray. The Mercury Iodide($HgI_2$) was used by photoconductor material, and the aluminum is used by reflective layer. The thickness of Mercury Iodide is about $200{\mu}m$, the operating voltage of the liquid crystal is 1.5~5V. The electrical properties of Mercury Iodide was measured, and the transmission efficiency of liquid crystal was measured by modulation potential.

  • The use of optical fiber makes it possible to transfer a large amount of data, thereby enabling a high-speed image transmission with a high response speed and a large number of frames. The need for an optical fiber HDMI System has grown in importance due to the rapid development of displays with large sizes and high-resolution images. In this paper, we have studied the structural design and FEM analysis of a 4C fiber guide for hybrid interconnection implementation. According to the structural analysis of the fiber guide, we have confirmed the safety of the design and we will make additional design changes to minimize the optical loss and fabricate a fiber guide for photoelectric composite HDMI in the future.

  • In this paper, we analyze the optical properties of the transmission grating recorded in a reflection-type photopolymer. Recording and reconstruction of the micropattern using a total internal reflection hologram applied to a reflection type photopolymer are studied. The transmission-type photopolymer was shown to have the maximum diffraction efficiency in $40^{\circ}C$ symmetric structure. However, that of reflection type photopolymer was more than 90% at $60{\sim}80^{\circ}$. The line and point patterns with the interval of $1{\mu}m$ are recorded successfully and can be observed when the micro objective lenses with 10 and 100 time magnification are used.

  • In this paper, designing and implementing multi-communication middleware in multi-thread environmet through event-based synchronization method are proposed for stable data transmission of electronic optical equipment, which requires combining camera and various sensors to process multiple high-speed data. To verify the performance of the implemented communication middleware, image data and sensor data were sent to compare differences in reception-based and transmission-based cycles, and the maximum number of communication possibilities to transmit and process multiple was measured and analyzed. In addition, the proposed communication middleware's performance was verified through experiments such as validating the integrity of the transmitted data and measuring the Round Trip Time.

  • Images can be obtained by collecting rays from objects. The characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation depend on the medium. In particular, in an underwater imaging system, the interface between air and water must be considered. Further, reflection and transmission coefficients can be found by using electromagnetic theory. Because of the fact that the values of these coefficients differ according to the media, the recorded light intensities will change. A color image sensor has three different color channels. Therefore, the reflection and transmission coefficients have to be calculated individually. Thereafter, by using these coefficients, we can compensate for the color information of underwater objects. In this paper, we present a method to compensate for the color information of underwater objects by using electromagnetic wave propagation theory. To prove our method, we conducted optical experiments and evaluated the quality of the compensated image by a metric known as mean square error.

  • A hybrid color and grayscale images encryption scheme based on the quaternion Hartley transform (QHT), the two-dimensional (2D) logistic map, the double random phase encoding (DRPE) in gyrator transform (GT) domain and the three-step phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) is presented. First, we propose a new color image processing tool termed as the quaternion Hartley transform, and we develop an efficient method to calculate the QHT of a quaternion matrix. In the presented encryption scheme, the original color and grayscale images are represented by quaternion algebra and processed holistically in a vector manner using QHT. To enhance the security level, a 2D logistic map-based scrambling technique is designed to permute the complex amplitude, which is formed by the components of the QHT-transformed original images. Subsequently, the scrambled data is encoded by the GT-based DRPE system. For the convenience of storage and transmission, the resulting encrypted signal is recorded as the real-valued interferograms using three-step PSI. The parameters of the scrambling method, the GT orders and the two random phase masks form the keys for decryption of the secret images. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has high security level and certain robustness against data loss, noise disturbance and some attacks such as chosen plaintext attack.

  • Increase of internet users and new type of applied traffic such as game, news, distributed computing, online image conference, and real time audio and video have leaded to demand for more bandwidth for each application. This algorithm represents a complex optical exchanger having typical wavelength switching function and time-slotted transmission function. Performance assessment of the proposed OXC (Optical Cross connect) sttucture defines LFS (Limit Frame Size) and VFS (Variable Frame Size) for classification by packet type and calculates the channel effect and loss probability depending the demanded bandwidth by access node increase. Optical exchanger in this type of structure can guarantee future network expansion as well as decrease of frame collision resulted from node increase.
