A 40-W 200-ns 300-kHz thulium-doped fiber laser at 2050 nm with a master oscillator power amplifier configuration was developed, for application to lithium-isotope separation. The master oscillator generated a 5.35 W continuous-wave beam, which the pulse generator then broke into 200-ns pulses at 300 kHz. Then, the laser beam was amplified by passing through a two-stage amplifier. The output power finally obtained was 42.0 W at 2050 nm, and was stable for a long time, over 2 hours. In spite of this achievement, mode instability was observed in the output beam. This can be solved in the future by using a method such as tight coiling.
We numerically demonstrate that the inherent spiking behavior in the quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) operation of an Nd:YAG laser can be suppressed by adopting bias pumping. After spiking suppression, the output QCW pulses from a bias-pumped Nd:YAG laser are very stable, and they can maintain nearly the same temporal shape as that of pump pulse under different pump repetition rates and peak powers. Our study implies that bias pumping is an alternative method of spiking suppression in solid-state lasers, and the application areas of an Nd:YAG laser may be extended by bias pumping.
We experimentally demonstrate the use of a gold-deposited side-polished fiber as a $2-{\mu}m$-band polarizing device to produce mode-locked pulses from a thulium/holmium-codoped fiber ring cavity. The mode-locking effect was induced by nonlinear transmission caused by the gold-deposited side-polished fiber, due to nonlinear polarization rotation of the oscillated beam within the fiberized cavity. It is also shown that ~558-fs pulses with a peak power of ~6.7 kW could readily be produced at a wavelength of 1935 nm through subsequent thulium/holmium-codoped fiber amplification, due to the higher-order soliton compression effect.
Much interests has been drawn for noble micro-engineering processes for the continuous size reduction on bulk materials from the field of micro-electronics with much downsized IC chips. A traditional microprocessing based on mechanical blade as well as a relatively long pulsed laser usually influence the physico-chemical properties of intact materials when the techniques are applied to process materials with a spatial resolution less than 10 microns. Meanwhile, ultrafast laser pulses are known to exhibit a very small heat-affect zone(HAE) compared to the traditional laser processing and to be applicable for the new functional materials with high performance in optical and electrical properties. In this report, we will review in brief the recent research works on the enhancement of micro-cutting speed of thin silicon wafer as well as the formation of Ge nanostructures based on ultrafast laser pulses.
The coupling between copper wire and a THz electromagnetic wave is one of the important factors to build up the magnitude and spectrum of a THz wave. We measured a I THz spectrum range THz pulse into a $480{\mu}m$ diameter and 23cm long copper wire waveguide. We measured THz pulses up to $275{\mu}m$ air gap between the end of the copper wire and transmitter or receiver chips. The coupling sensitivity of the transmitter is 3 times bigger than that of the receiver. The THz pulses propagated to air by the end of the receiver-side copper wire tip acting as a transmitter antenna. We confirmed that the THz field concentrates near the copper wire surface by opening the pin hole to the copper wire waveguide.

Pulsed lasers at the 613 nm and 1064 nm wavelengths on nanoseconds have been utilized to characterize the damage on Si photodiode exposed to intense illumination. Morphological damages and structural changes at sites on the photodiode irradiated during microseconds of laser pulses were analyzed by FE-SEM images and XRD patterns, respectively. The removal of oxide coating, ripple, melting marks, ridges, and crater on photodiodes were definitely observed in order of increasing the pulse intensities generated above the damage threshold. Then, the degradation in photosensitivity of the Si photodiode irradiated by high power density pulses was measured as a function of laser irradiation time at the various wavelengths. The free charge carrier and thermal diffusion mechanisms could have been invoked to characterize the damage. The relative photosensitivity data calculated using the thermal diffusion model proposed in this paper have been compared with the experimental data irradiated above the damage threshold.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture(EA) on Choksamni(ST36), a well-known acupuncture site, on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase(NADPH-d), neuropeptide Y(NPY) and vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP) in the cerebral cortex of spontaneously hypertensive rats(SHR). EA on Choksamni was applied using 2Hz electrical biphasic pulses of 10min, 3 times a week for a total of 10 sessions. Thereafter we evaluated changes in NADPH-d-positive neurons histochemically and changes in NPY and VIP-positive neurons immunohistochemically. The optical density of NADPH-d-positive neurons in the Choksamni group was significantly lower in all areas of the cerebral cortex than in the control group. However, the optical density of NPY-positive neurons in the Choksamni group was similar to that of the controls in most areas of the cerebral cortex, with the exception of the primary motor and visual cortices. The optical density of VIP-positive neurons in the Choksamni group was significantly decreased as compared to the control group in most areas of the cerebral cortex, with the exception of the cingulate cortex. The present results demonstrated that EA on Choksamni changes the activity of the NO system, and that stimulation at the same level, causes selective changes within the peptidergic system in the cerebral cortex of SHR.
We report on the development of a passively mode-locked near-infrared femtosecond laser with Cr:YAG crystal that operates near room temperature. The laser wavelength could easily be tuned by using only the internal prism pair over 110 nm from 1400 nm to 1510 nm in cw and over about 30 nm in mode-locked operation, respectively Maximum cw output powers of 810 mW were obtained with $1.5 \%$ output coupler for absorbed pump powers of 7.6 W. For compensation of the internal group velocity dispersion, an IR graded prism pair was used. The Cr:YAG laser delivered nearly Fourier-transform limited pulses with a pulse duration as short as 64 fs at 100 MHz repetition rate. In the mode-locked regime, the laser was operating at 1510 nm with a spectral bandwidth of 44 nm. In order to avoid unstable mode-locking and power instabilities, self-built tubes were inserted into the beam path in the resonator and purged with N2 gas. Finally, output powers of the Cr:YAG laser were optimized to 250 mW fer long time stable mode-locked operation.

The molecular orientational dynamics of the nonlinear optical(NLO) side-chain polymer N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol-poly (pphenylene terephthalates) have been studied using nonlinear optical responses as measured by second harmonic generation (SHG). A new pulsed corona poling is used to orient the NLO chromophores and the polymer segments into the noncentrosymmetric structure required to obtain the SHG signal. By corona poling of negative high voltage pulses with variable repetition rates (between 0.5 and 10 ㎑) at temperature between 25$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$, well below and about the glass transition temperature 70$^{\circ}C$, the side-chain chromophores and the polymer chain contour rearrange themselves and create the domain structure observed by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The pulsed corona voltage enhances the orientational ordering of the NLO chromophores and also significantly influences the growth of SHG signal and the improved relaxation behavior after the poling field is removed, reducing the visible damage to the polymer film dramatically. This new pulsed corona poling experiment gave direct in situ evidence that the NLO chromophore and the polymer backbone undergo anisotropic rearrangement during the poling process.

Plasma in liquid phase has attracted great attention in the last few years by the wide domain of applications in material processing, decomposition of organic and inorganic chemical compounds and sterilization of water. The plasma in liquid is characterized by three main regions which interact each - other during the plasma operation: the liquid phase, which supply the plasma gas phase with various chemical compounds and ions, the plasma in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure and the interface between these two regions. The most complex region, but extremely interesting from the fundamental, chemical and physical processes which occur here, is the boundary between the liquid phase and the plasma gas phase. In our laboratory, plasma in liquid which behaves as a glow discharge type, is generated by using a bipolar pulsed power supply, with variable pulse width, in the range of 0.5~10 ${\mu}s$ and 10 to 30 kHz repetition rate. Plasma in water and other different solutions was characterized by electrical and optical measurements. Strong emissions of OH and H radicals dominate the optical spectra. Generally water with 500 ${\mu}S/cm$ conductivity has a breakdown voltage around 2 kV, depending on the pulse width and the repetition rate of the power supply. The characteristics of the plasma initiated in ultrapure water between pairs of different materials used for electrodes (W and Ta) were investigated by the time-resolved optical emission and the broad-band absorption spectroscopy. The deexcitation processes of the reactive species formed in the water plasma depend on the electrode material, but have been independent on the polarity of the applied voltage pulses. Recently, Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy method was employed to investigate the chemistry in the liquid phase and at the interface between the gas and the liquid phases of the solution plasma system. The use of the solution plasma allows rapid fabrication of the metal nanoparticles without being necessary the addition of different reducing agents, because plasma in the liquid phase provides a reaction field with a highly excited energy radicals. We successfully synthesized gold nanoparticles using a glow discharge in aqueous solution. Nanoparticles with an average size of less than 10 nm were obtained using chlorauric acid solutions as the metal source. Carbon/Pt hybrid nanostructures have been obtained by treating carbon balls, synthesized in a CVD chamber, with hexachloro- platinum acid in a solution plasma system. The solution plasma was successfully used to remove the template remained after the mesoporous silica synthesis. Surface functionalization of the carbon structures and the silica surface with different chemical groups and nanoparticles, was also performed by processing these materials in the liquid plasma.
