  • We report 400 femto-second highly stable, nearly transform-limited, pulse generation at 10 GHz in $1540{\sim}1550$ nm wavelength region by adiabatic soliton pulse compression of an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser output. Without using any supermode selection device, supermode beating noise has been suppressed below -123 dB/Hz, resulting less than 100 femto-second timing jitters at the noise band of $1\;kHz{\sim}100\;MHz$.

  • We propose an optical Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) switching system using free-space optics and an output buffer memory. The distributor system in the switching fabric was analyzed using the Huygens-Fresnel principle and lens transformation. For monochromatic illumination, a pattern similar to the Fourier transform of the input distribution was observed across the output plane. A spatially broadened intensity distribution across the the output plane can be expected when the system is illminated with a partially coherent, quasimonochromatic beam. Spatially coherent pulses as short as 100fs can propagate through the distributor without severe spatial broadening.

  • We built an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating orthogonally polarized signals at different wavelengths simultaneously, based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. The OPO was pumped by ns-pulses at 1.064 ㎛ from a diode-pumped solid-state laser, where we found the type-0 and the type-1 quasi-phase matching conditions were satisfied simultaneously in the PPLN crystal. This enabled us to create a coherent light source which can emit dual signals which could be accessed easily by rotating a polarizer.

이 후 몇 편의 논문을 통하여 160Gb/s,300km(3$\times$100km)전송, 40Gb/s, 720km(6$\times$120km)전송 등이 보고되었다. • This work provides the fundamental knowledge of energy transport characteristics during very short-pulse laser heating of semiconductors from a microscopic viewpoint. Based on the self-consistent hydrodynamic equations, in-situ interactions between carriers, optical phonons, and acoustic phonons are simulated to figure out energy transport mechanism during ultrafast pulse laser heating of a silicon substrate through the detailed information on the time and spatial evolutions of each temperature for carriers, longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, acoustic phonons. It is found that nonequilibrium between LO phonons and acoustic phonons should be considered for ultrafast pulse laser heating problem, two-peak structures become apparently present for the subpicosecond pulses because of the Auger heating. A substantial increase in carrier temperature is observed for lasers with a few picosecond pulse duration, whereas the temperature rise of acoustic and phonon temperatures is relatively small with decreasing laser pulse widths. A slight lagging behavior is observed due to the differences in relaxation times and heat capacities between two different phonons. Moreover, the laser fluence has a significant effect on the decaying rate of the Auger recombination.

  • Recently, optical phased array(OPA) based laser detection and ranging(LADAR) has gained great interest to replace the traditional mechanical light detection and ranging technique(LiDAR). In OPA-based LADAR, it is well known that phases of laser pulses traveling through each of channels should be the same to obtain a narrow free-space single beam without noise-like ripples in the far field. However, it is difficult to provide such ideal condition due to the fabrication errors. To tackle this problem, any algorithms should be necessary to compensate the initial random phases of each channel in OPA antenna. In this paper, we propose a hill-climbing based phase calibration algorithm and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • We have developed a compact and high-power mode-locked fiber laser for multilayered optical memory. Fiber lasers have the potential to be compact and stable light sources that can replace bulk solid-state lasers. To generate high-power pulses, we used stretched-pulse mode locking. The average power and pulse width of the output pulse from the fiber laser that we developed were 109 mW and 2.1 ps, respectively. The dispersion of the output pulse was compensated with an external single-mode fiber of 2.5 m length. The pulse was compressed from 2.1 ps to 93 fs by dispersion compensation. The fiber laser we have developed is possible to use as a light source of multilayered optical memory. We also present a fiber confocal microscope as an alignment-free readout system of multilayered optical memories. The fiber confocal microscope does not require fine pinhole position alignment because the fiber core is used as the point light source and the pinhole, and both of which are always located at the conjugated point. The configuration reduces the required accuracy of pinhole position alignment. With these techniques we can present an all-fiber recording and readout system for multilayered memories.

  • We have experimentally demonstrated a Direct Optical Switching (DOS) CDMA for future wide-band mobile communication systems at the 40 ㎓ band by using orthogonal (crosscorrelation $\leq$2) unipolar type codes with code length of 16 and chip rate of 2.5 Gcps for radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Pulse-amplitude-equalized 40 ㎓ laser pulses were provided by rational-harmonically mode-locking a 10 ㎓ fiber ring laser.

  • We report on high-power continuous-wave operations of an Er:YAG ceramic laser in-band pumped by a cladding-pumped Er,Yb fiber laser at 1532 nm. With an output coupler of 10% transmission, the ceramic laser yielded 16.7 W of continuous-wave output at 1645 nm for 28.8 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 61.0% with respect to the incident pump power. The lasing wavelength switched to 1617 nm when output couplers of > 20% transmission were used. Up to 16.2 W of 1617 nm output was generated for 33.0 W of incident pump power, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 51.8%. Graphene Q-switched operation of Er:YAG cermic laser at 1645 nm was also demonstrated with stable pulses of 30-74 kHz repetition rates and 1.5-6.4 ${\mu}s$ pulse widths.

  • Balanced CPM ring dye laser was fabricated. Pulses as short as 62 fs were measured using noncollinear second harmonic generation autocorrelator. The optimum conditions were studied by changing the concentration of staturable absorber, pumping power of Ar+ laser and alignments of the intracavity four-prism sequence.
