  • The second-order nonlinear optical effect, especially the second harmonic generation, in Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films have get much attention over the past few years. For second harmonic generation(SHG) of the ultrathin organic films, the multilayer structure of the film should have the noncentrosymmetric arrangements of molecules. The Langmuir-Blodgett technique can result in the production of thin films of precisely controlled dimensions and structure. In this paper, n-octadecyl 4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)-1-naphthyl ether, ONNE(azohenzene derivative), was synthesized and the optical properties of ONNE was studied. Nonccntrosymmctric Z-type LB films of ONNE were prepared and SHG intensity of the film were measured. The structural characteristics of floating monolayer(L film) and LB film of ONNE were discussed with $\pi$-A isotherm. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The polarized UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and SHO intensity suggest the molecular orientation in LB film.

  • Optical property improvements for ONP (old newspaper) and OMG (old magazine) were attempted by application of in-situ $CaCO_3$ formation process on recycled fiber surfaces. Washing treatment of ONP and OMG resulted in 35~40% yield loss for around 6% brightness improvement. Washing plus bleaching process with $H_2O_2$ and FAS (formamidine sulfinic acid) improved brightness and ERIC values a little more with the same amount of yield loss as washing treatment. In-situ $CaCO_3$ formation method improved those optical properties much better than the washing plus bleaching method without loss of yield, and better than the case of adding high brightness PCC up to the same ash level. It can be said that the in-situ $CaCO_3$ formation method may be used as an effective alternative for upgrading optical properties of recycled fibers.

  • $SnO_2$ single layer films (100 nm thick) and 2 nm thick Ni intermediated $SnO_2$ films were deposited on glass substrate by RF and DC magnetron sputtering without intentional substrate heating and then the influence of the Ni interlayer on the electrical and optical properties of the films were investigated. As deposited $SnO_2$ single layer films show the optical transmittance of 82.6% in the visible wavelength region and a resistivity of $6.6{ \times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$, while $SnO_2/Ni/SnO_2$ trilayer films show a lower resistivity of $2.7{ \times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$ and an optical transmittance of 76.3% in this study. Based on the figure of merit, it can be concluded that the intermediate Ni thin film effectively enhances the opto-electrical performance of $SnO_2$ films for use as transparent conducting oxides in flexible display applications.

  • In this study a new design concept of the Fabry-Perot filter, constructed with an anisotropic space layer and a couple of isotropic mirrors, was proposed based on the Maxwell equations and the characteristic matrix method. The single- and double-cavity Fabry-Perot filters were designed, and their optical properties were investigated with a developed software package. In addition, the dependence of the transmittance and phase shift for two orthogonal polarization states on the column angle of the anisotropic space layer and the incidence angle were discussed. We demonstrated that the polarization state of electromagnetic waves and phase shifts can be modulated by exploiting an anisotropic space layer in a polarization F-P filter. Birefringence of the anisotropic space layer provided a sophisticated phase modulation with varied incidence angles over a broad range, resulting in a wide-angle phase shift. This new concept would be useful for designing optical components with isotropic and anisotropic materials.

  • Rewritable optical disk is one of the essential data storage media in these days, which takes advantage of the different optical properties in the amorphous and crystalline states of phase change materials. As well known, data transfer rate is one of the most important parameter of the phase change optical disks, which is mostly limited by the crystallization speed of recording media. Therefore, we doped Sn/Bi to $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ alloy in order to improve the crystallization speed and investigated the dependence of phase change characteristics on Sn/Bi doping concentration. The Sn/Bi doped $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ thin film was deposited by RF magnetron co-sputtering system and phase change characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), static tester, UV-visible spectrophotometer, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Optimum doping concentration of Bi and Sn were 5${\~}$6 at.$\%$ and the minimum time for crystallization was below than 20 ns. This improvement is correlated with the simple crystalline structure of Sn/Bi doped $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ and the reduced activation barrier arising from Sn/Bi doping. The results indicate that Sn/Bi might play an important role in the transformation kinetics of phase change materials..

  • In this study, a series of bi-axially oriented films based on homo polypropylene (PP) and hydrocarbon resin (HCR) modified PP were prepared to investigate their mechanical properties, optical properties, permeability to gases and water vapors and shrinkage ratio. Hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) resin and hydrogenated C9 resin were used as HCR in this study. Bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films made with PP/HCR blends showed better mechanical properties (higher Young's modulus), better optical properties (lower haze), lower permeability to gases and water vapors and increased shrinkage ratio than BOPP films made with homo-PP. Hydrogenated DCPD resin and hydrogenated C9 resin showed similar contribution to the improvement in mechanical properties and optical properties of BOPP films, but there are a differences in permeability to gases and water vapors and shrinkage ratio.

  • Recently, Fe/Si multilayered films (MLF) have been a focus of interest due to the strong antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling observed in such kind of MLF originates from the same nature as in the metal/metal MLF. In particular, a question of whether the spacer layer in the Fe/Si MLF is metallic or semiconducting is of interest. In spite of various experimental techniques envolved in the study, the chemical composition and the properties of the interfacial regions in the MLF exhibiting the AF coupling is still questionable. The nature of the AF coupling and the interfacial properties of Fe/Si MLF are investigated in this study. A series of Fe/Si MLF with a fixed nominal thickness of Fe(3nm) and a variable thickness of Sk(1.0-2.2nm) were deposited by RF-sputtering onto glass substrates at room temperature. The atomic structures and the actual sublayer thicknesses of the Fe/Si MLF are investigated by using x-ray diffraction. The magnetic-field dependence of the equatorial Kerr effect clearly shows an appearance of the AF coupling between Fe sublayers at tsi = 1.5 - 1.8 nm. the drastic discrepancies between the experimental magnetooptical (MO) and optical properties, and based on the assumption of sharp interfaces between Fe and Si sublayers leads to a conclusion that pure si is absent in the AF-coupled Fe/Si MLF. Introducing in the model nonmagnetic semiconducting FeSi alloy layers between Fe and Si sublayers or as spacer between pure Fe sublayers only slightly improves the agreement between model and experiment. A reasonable agreement between experimental and simulated MO spectra was reached with using the fitted optical properties for the spacer with a typical metallic type of behavior. The results of the magnetic properties measured by vibrating sample magnetometer and magnetic circular dichroism are also analyzed in connection with the MO and optical properties.

  • The vertical profiles and optical properties of Asian dust are investigated using ground-based measurements from 1998 to 2002. Vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient are evaluated using MPL (Micro Pulse Lidar) data. Optical parameters such as aerosol optical thickness ($\tau$), ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent ($\alpha$), single scattering albedo ($\omega$), refractive index, and volume size distribution are analyzed with sun/sky radiometer data for the same period. We can separate aerosol vertical profiles into three categories. First category named as 'Asian dust case', which aerosol extinction coefficient is larger than $0.15km^{-1}$ and dust layer exists from surface up to 3-4km. Second category named as 'Elevated aerosol case', which aerosol layer exists between 2 and 6km with 1-2.5km thickness, and extinction coefficient is smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. Third category named as 'Clear sky case', which aerosol extinction coefficient appears smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. and shows that diurnal variation of background aerosol in urban area. While optical parameters for first category indicate that $\tau$ and $\alpha$ are $0.63{\pm}0.14$, $0.48{\pm}0.19$, respectively. Also, aerosol volume concentration is increased for range of 1 and $4{\mu}m$, in coarse mode. Optical parameters for second category can be separated into two different types. Optical properties of first type are very close to Asian dust cases. Also, dust reports of source region and backward trajectory analyses assure that these type is much related with Asian dust event. However, optical properties of the other type are similar to those of urban aerosol. For clear sky case, $\tau$ is relatively smaller and $\alpha$ is larger compare with other cases. Each case shows distinct characteristics in aerosol optical parameters.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the viscosity of coating colors and ink-jet printing properties with different coating colors with various blending ratios of silica based pigments. The volume of pigments was measured to evaluate the effect of the pigments on the viscosity of coating colors. Contact angle, the change of ink diameter, optical density, and the area and perimeter of a printed let-ter were evaluated to examine the effect of the ink absorption on the ink-jet printing properties. Generally, as the amount of silica pigments Increased the ink-jet printing quality improved. But this caused an increase of the overall coating viscosity.

  • The best methods for distribution controled of LED lighting fixtures is control to designed LED chip array, lens and reflector. However, lens design need distribution design to reflector for low-wattage LED lighting because of difficulty of production and reduction of light efficiency. In addition, it needs maximize of thermal performance to improve the efficiency and reliability of device. As a result, for the height of reflector 40[mm] and Inclination 25[$^{\circ}$], we can see the best distribution properties, and, in the thermal properties, junction temperature MCPCB 62.9 [$^{\circ}C$], FR4 PCB 89.6 [$^{\circ}C$], FR4 PCB from Via-hole is 63.1 [$^{\circ}C$]. it may improve for thermal properties for makes the Via-hole.
