  • A flexible and tunable microwave photonic filter based on adjustable optical frequency comb source is demonstrated. We use a combination of a dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator and an intensity modulator to generate fifteen comb lines with proper weights to implement a desired filter. The optical comb weights, corresponding to the tap coefficients of the filter, are flexibly changed by adjusting the operation parameters of the modulators. The achieved bandwidth and stopband attenuation of the tunable filter are 0.7 GHz and 20 dB, respectively. In addition, we overcome the undesired low frequency suppression appeared in a conventional scheme by applying a dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator for single sideband suppressed carrier modulation.

  • We designed and fabricated a travelingwave CPW(coplanar waveguide) electrode for LiNbO$_3$ optical modulator. To Investigate the variation of microwave refractive index of these electrodes, we prepared the CPW electrode samples as a function of electrode thickness and measured the TDR and S-parameter. From this results, we could know the electrode conditions of index matching to 2.20 for 1150 nm optical wave index for applying LiNbO$_3$ optical modulator. Also we discussed the some properties of CPW electrode for applying LiNbO$_3$ optical modulator.

  • The impact of equivalent optical bandwidth on the performance of a system using a reflective electroabsorption modulator (R-EAM) based optical source has been experimentally evaluated with signals operating at 2.5 Gb/s and beyond. The equivalent optical bandwidth of our source with a broadband seed light was simply adjusted by using a bandwidth tunable optical filter. From the measurements, we have estimated the required equivalent optical bandwidth of our source for an error-free transmission (@ bit-error-rate of $10^{-12}$) and a forward error correction (FEC) threshold of $2{\times}10^{-4}$.

  • A traveling-wave CPW(coplanar waveguide) electrode with abruptly broken input/output-taper for LiNbO$_3$optical modulator was designed and fabricated. The electrical characteristics of traveling-wave electrode on z-cut LiNbO$_3$crystal with SiO$_2$buffer layers were measured by network analyzer. To confirm the possibility of the electro-optic modulator electrode, detailed calculations of the impedance, microwave effective index and attenuation constants are presented as a function of the microwave electrode thickness, but the buffer layer thickness is fixed as 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These characteristics are discussed from the viewpoint of the device optimization and are expected to be design guides for the LiNbO$_3$modulator’s electrodes.

  • In this paper, it is analyzed the statistical characteristics on the transmission performance of the optical SCM transmission in the CDMA RF signal relay system. Using Mach-Zehnder modulator, optical signal is regenerated into CDMA RF signal. Transfer function model of mach-Zehnder modulator is approximated to the third power of the input signal using Taylor series. BER results are analyzed under the multiple access interference and multi-path fading environment.

  • $H:LiNbO_3$ optical modulator with Cu/parylene electrode layer, which has a merits in the bandwidth, power consumption and fabrication conditions as compared with conventional Au/Cr/$SiO_2$, is proposed and fabricated. Analysis and design of optical modulator is performed by finite element calculation. Various unit processes for fabricating the proposed modulator, 1550nm $H:LiNbO_3$ optical waveguide, parylene buffer layer, and CPW Cu electrode, were developed, After dicing and end-face polishing of fabricated modulator chip, optical modulation responses as sawtooth electrical driving voltage has been measured at low frequencies. Properties of optical waveguide had not been changed before and after Cu/parylene electrode processes, which make confirm the reproducible fabrication of optical modulator.

  • Nonlinear distortion introduced by the optical transmitter using a direct modulation of laser diode(LD) and an indirect modulation of optical modulator can limit considerably the performance of analog optical link system such as subcarrier multiplexing system. In this paper, we have compensated the nonlinear distortion of LD and optical modulator using electrical predistorter. In the case of LD, two-tone experiments using 877.5 MHz and 882.5 MHz have shown reduction of 19 dB in third-order intermodulation product(IMP$_3$). And in the case of optical modulator, we have achieved nearly 21 dB reduction in IMP3 through two-tone experiments using 1.8975 GHz and 1.9025 GHz. The spurious free dynamic ranges of LD and optical modulator are also improved by 5 dB/Hz$^{2}$ 3/ and 7 dB/Hz$^{2}$ 3/, respectively.

  • In this paper, an optical switch/modulator is designed and its light propagating characteristics analyzed using a simplified BPM. The distinctive feature of this switch/modulator is that all its waveguide branches are designed as single-mode. The principle of the device is based on the coupled mode theory in the Y-junction interconnecting waveguide. In spite of the fact all waveguides are designed as single-mode, by adjusting the interconnecting waveguide length'of the device the same characteristics as existing up to date devices are obtainable. Numerical results show that the switching characteristics periodically depend upon an interconnecting waveguide length with a spatial of about $150^{{\mu}m}$ in the $Ti:LiNbO_3$ step index waveguide. The design concept would therefore be utilized effectively in fabricating a monolithic high density optical integrated circuit.

  • We employ the SOR method to analyze CPW electrodes of Ti:$LiNbO_3$ Mach-Zehnder traveling-wave optical modulator in the tapered region of an optical modulator. In the tapered region of the modulator, we design the electrodes satisfying $Z_c=50{\Omega}$. In the modulation region, we find two find sets of design parameters. One set is for $Z_c=50{\Omega}$, $n_{eff}=2.26$ and the another is for $n_{eff}=2.2$, $Z_c=47.7{\Omega}$.

  • This paper proposes a frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator employing a novel three-arm dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). One output of the MZM generates the fundamental-frequency signal which is recycled by the microwave optical fiber link for oscillation, and the other output can generate the frequency-doubled signal. Experiment was conducted using a commercial two-arm MZM, a phase modulator, and an optical fiber link of 89 meters in length. A 19-GHz frequency-doubled signal was successively obtained with fundamental signal suppression more than 36 dB.
