  • A broadband optical coupler with a broad bandwidth of 1000 nm based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is investigated. The PCF has 6 layers of air hole structures and a diameter of $130{\mu}m$. The PCF-based coupler is fabricated by using a fused biconical tapering method based on heating and elongation processes. Changing temperature and an elongation length can control the bandwidth and the bandedge wavelength of the PCF-based broadband coupler. The diameter of the fused region in the PCF-based coupler was measured to be $23{\mu}m$. The fabricated PCF-based coupler has a nearly-flat coupling ration of 3-dB in a broad bandwidth of 1000 nm, which is wider than that of the previously reported PCF-based coupler and that of the single-modefiber-based coupler. Since the resolution of optical coherence tomography system is proportional to the bandwidths of both an optical light sources and an interferometer, the fabricated PCF-based broadband optical coupler has a great potential for realization of a broadband interferogram.

  • In this study, we performed a modeling for $K^{+}$ ion-exchanged diffused channel waveguide and waveguide-type optical coupler by Wentzel-Kramer-Brillouin(WKB) dispersion equation, normalized field distribution equation for mode and coupled mode theory, and examined the optical-power-dividing of the optical coupler fabricated by using the modeling condition. The optical-power-dividing was observed at the waveguide-type optical coupler with 3[.mu.m] line-width, 6[.mu.m] space between channel waveguides, and 3[mm] interaction length.h.

  • The theoretical formulations are derived for calculating optical power change for intensity modulated fiber optical microphone. The optical power change is due to optical paths, misalignment and geometry of optical coupler. Based on the theoretical equations, three different optical couplers are simulated with respect to several angles of optical couplers. In order to evaluate the formulation, a multi-mode to multi-mode coupler which is one of abovementioned optical couplers is designed and characterized by carving out both static experiments and dynamic experiments. Considering experimental results, this paper conclude that the theoretical formulations is very useful for design optical coupler and this kind of fiber optic sensor is adequate to microphone.

  • In this paper, optical noise is reduced by a differential detector with an optical fiber coupler in an optical wireless system. An $1\times2$ optical fiber coupler divides the received optical signal by 2 equally, and connects them to the two photodiodes in a differential detector. The output voltage variation due to the abrupt change of optical noise distribution in space disappears because the two photodiodes effectively detect the optical signal at the same point. The signal to noise ratio in a differential detector with a fiber coupler was 8 dB higher than in a single photodiode with an optical filter.

  • This paper presents the design and characterization of a novel fiber optical coupler for intensity modulated fiber optical microphone. Theoretical equations for the optical power coupling are presented in detail including optical path analysis and misalignment. Various optical couplers are simulated and manufactured. A multi-mode to multi-mode coupler is characterized by static and dynamic movements of mirror on a well designed experimental stage.

  • We have investigated a temperature sensor on a thermal expansion effect of a fused optical fiber coupler. Both side of the fused tapered region of the coupler were fixed on a metal support to induce the high thermal expansion effect. The sensor showed that the peak coupling wavelengths were shifted to shorted wavelength region with increased of environmental temperature. The sensitivity of the sensor was $0.12nm/^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper is studied the high-repetition rate optical-pulse stream generation using optical loop mirror coupler. With the recent development of the ultrahigh-speed optical time division multiplexed system, hish-repetition rate optical-pulse stream generation is necessary. This is different from conventional approaches, which use fiber or integrated waveguide delay line circuits. The high-repetition-rate optical-pulse multiplication phenomenon occurs when the optical pulse's spectral width is greater than the transfer bandwidth of the coupler used. From the analysis, the output repetition rate can be controlled by using fiber couplers with different equivalent transfer bandwidths. The pulse separation spacing is controlled by number of cascaded coupler in optical loop mirror coupler scheme.

A fabricated POF coupler showd 2.27~3.31 dB of insertion loss for optical combining and 8.67~11.27dB of insertion loss for optical spitting.

  • We designed a multimode interference (MMI) coupler to use in vertical coupling of double layered polymeric waveguides and analyzed the coupling characteristics by comparing our experimental and simulation results. We found that our proposed new structure, a stepped MMI coupler, is effective in vertical coupling between waveguide layers with a short length of MMI and has a high tolerance for the variation in the structure of an MMI coupler that can be induced as errors in the fabrication process.
