  • The optical activity of a fluid in the extreme critical region, where the Ornstein-Zernike theory does not hold, is explicitly obtained. We suggest new experimental methods to measure the critical exponent for correlation function by using the results of circular dichroism and optical rotation given in this paper.

  • A single-layer neural network with 4$\times$4 input neurons and 4 output neurons is optically implemented. Holographic lenslet arrays are used for the e optical interconnection topology, a liquid crystal light valve(LCLV) is used for controlling optical interconection weights. Using a Perceptron learning rule, it classifics input patterns into 4 different categories. It is shown that the performance of the adaptive neural network depends on the learning rate, the correlation of input patterns, and the nonlinear characteristic properties of the liquid crystal light valve.

  • We proposed a symbolic substitution method based on an optical correlator for an optical parallel addition. In the proposed symbolic substitution method, we used redundant binary number of the symbolic substitution rules as a number system and chose MAC3E filter which had very low sidelobes and good correlation peak compared with SDF filter as the optical correlation filter. We encoeded input numbers property to increase the discrimination capability and divided inpt patterns into 5 groups of the same addition results to minimize the number of symbolic substitution rules. Through the computer simulation, we confirmed the proposed method was suitable to implement the optical parallel adder.

  • The new method of x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) [1] is developed recently for probing the dynamics of surface height fluctuations as a function of lateral length scale. Measurements were performed on supported polystyrene (PS) films of thicknesses varying from 84 to 333 nm at temperatures above the PS glass transition temperature. Within a range of wave vectors spanning $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}$ $nm^{-1}$, good agreement is found between the measured surface dynamics and the theory of overdamped thermal capillary waves on thin films. Quantitatively, the data can be accounted for using the viscosity of bulk PS. (omitted)

  • The optical JTC system has the advantage of being applied to the real-time correlation system, but it has some difficulties that its amplitude and phase signals cannot be separately processed. Recently to solve those problems the BPEJTC and HPEJTC systemshaving the same characteristics of that of the POC and POF have been proposed. But there is no quantitive analysis how much the amplitude and phase signals are contributed to the correlation outputs respectively. In this paper, a new ACJTC system based on the conventional ACMF is proposed and discussed through the mathematical analysis. The good correlation discrimination of the proposed system is also analyzed by changing the relative contributions of the phase and amplitude signals for some similar targets. From the successful computer simulation results on the scenario where three same targets are periodically located on the natural backgrround, the possibility of the high performance real-time correlation system based on the optical ACJTC is suggested.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new optical method for the efficient recognition of Korean characters. There are six filters in the proposed method which employed the concepts of amplitude-modulated phase-only filter(AMPOF) and spatial frequency modulation(SFM). Here, amplitude modulation is used to achieve improved correlation discrimination and SFM is to reduce the number of filters. We also used a simplified synthetic discriminant function(SDF) for distortion invariance of input image. In order to recognize the partial rotation invariant Korean characters, the proposed distortion invariant minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter is synthesized SFM, partial rotation invariant filter (PRIF), AMPOF and MACE for partial rotation invariance in the frequency domain. The advantage of the proposed filters is to supress the sidelobes of cross correlation peak away from the autocorrelation peak and to produce sharp correlation peaks. We performed simulation and optical experiment for some of Korea characters using the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has more improved discriminant ability and reduced processing time than the conventional methods.

  • This article proposes a digital image correlation (DIC) strain measurement method based on a finite element (FE) algorithm. A two-step digital image correlation is presented. In the first step, the gradient-based subpixels technique is used to search the displacements of a region of interest of the specimen, and then the strain fields are obtained by utilizing the finite element method in the second step. Both simulation and experiment processing, including tensile strain deformation, show that the proposed method can achieve nearly the same accuracy as the cubic spline interpolation method in most cases and higher accuracy in some cases, such as the simulations of uniaxial tension with and without noise. The results show that it also has a good noise-robustness. Finally, this method is used in the uniaxial tensile testing for Dahurian Larch wood specimens with or without a hole, and the obtained strain values are close to the results which were obtained from the strain gauge and the cubic spline interpolation method.

  • Integral imaging combined with photon-counting detection has been researched for three-dimensional information sensing under low-light-level conditions. This paper addresses the extraction of distance information with photon-counting integral imaging. The longitudinal distance to the object is obtained utilizing photon-counting elemental images. The pixel disparity is estimated by maximizing the nonlinear correlation of photocounts. The first- and second-order statistical properties of the nonlinear correlation are theoretically derived. In the experiments, these properties are verified by varying the mean number of photocounts in the scene. The average distance is compared to that from the intensity information, showing the robustness of the proposed system even at low photocounts.

  • A single-layer Perceptron with 4x4 input neurons and one output neuron is optically implemented. Holo-graphic lenslet arrays are usee for the programmable optical interconnection topology. The hologram is bleached in order to increase the diffraction efficiency. It is shown that the performance of Perceptron depends on the learning rate, the inertia rate, and the correlation of input patterns.
