  • Gas/liquid two-phase ejector is a device without moving parts, in which liquid is used to drive gas of a low-pressure source. In this paper, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a vertical down type two-phase ejector were studied using an air-water loop system. Entrained air flow rates were measured with inlet and outlet pressures of the ejector with varying water flow rate. Homogeneous bubbly flows in the discharge pipe were confirmed by the high speed flow visualization method. Quantitative measurements of void fraction were made using a newly developed fiber optic probe system.

  • A new monitoring system has been developed for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone was obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system reflected the ideal transport phenomena of gas phase ozone at various flow rates. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of SOM. However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.

  • Phase-generated carrier (PGC) demodulation algorithm is the main demodulation methods in Fiber-optic interferometric sensors (FOISs). The conventional PGC demodulation algorithms are influenced by the carrier phase delay between the interference signal and the carrier signal. In this paper, an automatic carrier phase delay synchronization (CPDS) algorithm based on orthogonal phase-locked technique is proposed. The proposed algorithm can calculate the carrier phase delay value. Then the carrier phase delay can be compensated by adjusting the initial phase of the fundamental carrier and the second-harmonic carrier. The simulation results demonstrate the influence of the carrier phase delay on the demodulation performance. PGC-Arctan demodulation system based on CPDS algorithm is implemented on SoC. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to obtain and eliminate the carrier phase delay. In comparison to the conventional demodulation algorithm, the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) of the proposed algorithm increases 55.99dB.

  • The current copper-based communication network is going to be replaced with an optic fiber network. The new technology allows a larger amount of information to be transmitted than before. Due to its bandwidth and relatively high installation cost, however, the optic fiber network does not exhibit the inherent structural redundancy provided by the conventional copper-based network. We propose to supply it by adding multiple paths between important nodes. This so-called network survivability problem is computationally expensive to solve exactly. We report the application of a heuristic algorithm to this problem. Also discussed is the issue of how to make use of existing conduits.

  • In order to measure the temperature of bridge wire, the explosive material is removed from EED and a fiber optic temperature sensor is installed near the bridge wire. Using the heat transfer theory, the optimum position of the fiber optic sensor in the EED is determined and the temperature-distance equation is derived from test result. The measuring technique can be utilized to the real electromagnetic radiation hazard test.

  • Precision displacement of less than a few nm resolution was measured in real-time using fiber optic EFPI sensor. The novel method for real-time processing of analyzing EFPI output signal was developed and verified. Linearity in the mean values of interferometric light intensity among adjacent fringes was shown and verified the sinusoidal approximation algorithm that estimates past and coming fringe values. Real-time signal processing program was developed and the intensity signal of the EFPI sensor was transformed to the phase shift with this program. The resolution below $0.36{\sim}8.6$ nm in the displacement range of $0{\sim}300{\mu}m$ was obtained. The nano-positioner with a piezoelectric actuator and the EFPI sensor system was designed and tested. The positioner successfully reached to the desired destination within 1 nm accuracy.

  • A signal processor for interferometeric fiber optic sensors, which measure dynamic quantities of frequency up to 1 KHz with high sensitivity, is developed. It is a high-speed version of the all-digital phase tracking (ADPT) processor that was used to measure static or slowly-varying quantities. The processor was applied to a fiber optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer to evaluate the performance. The measured total harmonic distortion was near to -50 ㏈, which is the theoretical limit or the ADPT signal processing.

  • Common methods of determining the spatial resolution of fiber-optic image guides are by measuring the diameter of individual microfibers or by the use of a resolution test target. However these methods cannot provide enough information of spatial resolution in ultrathin fiber-optic image guides. In this study, a simple method to measure the modulation transfer function (MTF) of an mage guide was developed. The MTFs of ultrathin image guides with 3 and 4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Um diameter were measured by examining transmitted sharp edge image. This method should be especially useful for measuring spatial resolution of ultrahigh resolution image guides with less than 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter microfibers because their spatial resolution cannot be determined by individual microfiber diameter due to crosstalk and leaky ray phenomena.
