  • Recently, population based optimization algorithms are developed to deal with a variety of optimization problems. In this paper, the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is dramatically enhanced and a new algorithm is named Enhanced Salp Swarm Algorithm (ESSA) which is effectively utilized in optimization problems. To generate the ESSA, an opposition-based learning and merit function methods are added to standard SSA to enhance both exploration and exploitation abilities. To have a clear judgment about the performance of the ESSA, firstly, it is employed to solve some mathematical benchmark test functions. Next, it is exploited to deal with engineering problems such as optimally designing the benchmark buildings equipped with multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD) under earthquake excitation. By comparing the obtained results with those obtained from other algorithms, it can be concluded that the proposed new ESSA algorithm not only provides very competitive results, but also it can be successfully applied to the optimal design of the MTMD.

  • This study analyses the nexus between political change and development of parliamentary politics in Malaysia. The continued and stable parliamentary politics did not necessarily associated with political development in Malaysia for the last five decades. Except the 1969 general election, the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional(BN), has never been failed to obtain the two-third majority of parliamentary seats even though there has been regular general elections in every 4-5 years without any interruption. It is, however, worth noting that there has been dramatic political changes since the late 1990s. In particular, the 2008 general election showed the remarkable results, collapsing the two-third majority of BN's parliamentary seats. The opposition parties even took over the 5 state governments out of 12 in total. The more distinguished feature was the emergence of opposition coalition, called Pakatan Rakyak(PR), right after the 2008 general election. It was the first united coalition in Malaysia's modern political history among the severely divided opposition parties. Since its emergence, the PR has initiated various changes leading towards a more active parliamentary politics. In this regards, this study argues that parliamentary politics is no more regarded as a dependent variable in Malaysia's political process.

  • This study traces the possibility of political change in the Malaysian electoral history, especially by focusing on the 13th general election held in May 2013. The results of the 13th general election was another turning point in the history of Malaysia's electoral politics. Following after the 12th general election held in 2008, opposition coalition(PR) achieves a remarkable electoral result by obtaining over 50% of the total votes. Opposition parties also successfully collapsed the ruling coalition(BN)'s two-third majority in parliamentary. It was de-facto defeat of the ruling coalition and victory of the opposition coalition. More precisely, the 2013 election results show that the reformasi movement, which was active in 1998-99 period, are still alive and its impact on Malaysian electoral politics get stronger. Malaysia has long been considered as a typical electoral authoritarian regime since its independence in 1957. It is because that there has been negative relations between electoral politics and political change through out its electoral history. As shown in the most recent two general elections held in 2008 and 2013, however, Malaysia's hegemonic political system can be possibly changed through electoral politics. This article examines the detailed results of the series of post-reformarsi general elections(1999, 2004, 2008, 2013) and its political implications towards the nexus of electoral politics and political change under the electoral authoritarian regime in Malaysia.

  • Louis I. Kahn is cleary one of 20th century great architects. The character of his philosophy of architecture can be condensed as simple words; Architectural Essence, because the very nature of his work based on historicity is so fundamental. Some contemporary architects and architectural critics regard it as a symbol of Post-Modern Architecture era expressing relative multiplicity or an expression of Heideggerian existentialism, but others do as the attribute of fundamentalist like absolute Plato's Idea. Comparing the former, studies of the latter theme have been executed superficially and somewhat biasedly for last decades. In the context, this paper attempt to reanalyze Kahn's idea of 'Architectural Essence' with the deep view of Platonist focused on the concept of binary opposition and causality.

  • The orifice establishment which is improper does to change the entity differential pressure and occurs an error in flow measurement data. Because of this, the thermal power of nuclear power plant could be evaluated excessively and the safety margin could be decreased. In this paper, characters of orifice which is established abnormally was investigated. Specially, the orifice plate which is established in opposition case was modeled and analyzed. Finally, 14.4% was lowly measured differential pressure, when being established in the resultant opposition. And this result with EPRI and NRC experiences was similar.

  • Distribution system is a critical link between customer and utility. The control of power loss is the main factor which decides the performance of the distribution system. There are two methods such as (i) distribution system reconfiguration and (ii) inclusion of capacitor banks, used for controlling the real power loss. Considering the improvement in voltage profile with the power loss reduction, later method produces better performance than former method. This paper presents an advanced evolutionary algorithm for capacitor inclusion for loss reduction. The conventional sensitivity analysis is used to find the optimal location for the capacitors. In order to achieve a better approximation for the current candidate solution, Opposition based Differential Evolution (ODE) is introduced. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated through 10, 33, 34 and85-bus radial distribution systems.

  • We can define as retaliatory crime avenge crime for crime statement, testimony, state of victimized, witness etc. of crimers related. In case of Republic of Korea, damages of retaliatory crimes are every year increasing and increasing ratio is high, Nevertheless, opposition for retaliatory is incomplete realities. This study is going to search for the opposition method with scrutinize of regulation for retaliary crimes.
