  • Hotels have recently started to implement enterprise information systems to measure and report sustainability indicators in a smart manner. However, a complex ownership structure in a hotel chain prevents full smart systems adoption at the individual property level. This study explores how a smart sustainability performance measurement system (SPMS) for waste management adoption correlates with customer ratings, customer reviews, operational efficiency scores, and between franchised and corporate-managed properties. We derive insights from the secondary data constructed from multiple sources for a large multinational hotel chain hotel. The findings suggest that hotels that adopt SPMS have better operational efficiency scores and more customer reviews. Within the hotels that adopted SPMS, corporate-managed hotels have a lower level of ratings than franchised hotels, but they have higher operational efficiency scores and more reviews. We discuss research implications for the concept of smart tourism and hotel management literature and managerial implications.

  • This study examines the effects of supply chain search and application strategies on organizational capability and corporate operational performance. To achieve this aim, a survey was administered to middle managers of 298 small- and medium-sized venture companies in Busan, South Korea. Empirical analysis showed that supply chain search and application strategies have a positive effect on organizational capability and corporate operational performance. In addition, organizational capability is positively mediated by supply chain search and application strategies in terms of the mediating effect of corporate operational performance. Consequently, search and application as supply chain strategies are facilitating factors as mediators that improve corporate performance through the concentration of organizational capability. Findings suggest that the search and application of supply chain strategies need to act as accelerating variables that improve organizational performance, and supply chain strategies need to be applied in small- and medium-sized manufacturing businesses.

  • Many previous studies on the subject of supply chain have consistently claimed that they need collaboration among the partners of supply chains in order to enhance supply chain performance. The purpose of research is to examine the causal linkages among relational characteristics, collaboration, performance in the logistics firm and this research focuses on two types collaboration(operational collaboration and strategic collaboration) as the mediation variable between relational characteristics and supply chain performance. To test the above research questions, we collected data from logistics firm(N=164). The proposed structural model was tested using the PLS(Partial Least Square) statistical program. The research results are as follows. Trust, and information sharing have positive influences on operational collaboration, and operational collaboration have also positive influences on supply chain performance. Duration and information sharing have positive influences on strategic collaboration. However, strategic collaboration has non-positive influences on supply chain performance. The effect of relational characteristics on supply chain performance is mediated by operational collaboration.

  • Many organizations experience that the Performance they gained from IT portfolio is lower than they expected values. As with any investment, executives are concerned with maximizing the performance from their investment in IT. This study focused on the relationship or fit between orientations of IT strategy and directions of IT portfolio to maximize IT performance. A field survey of chief information officers of Korea manufacturing sector was conducted in 2003. Complete data of 147 firms was analyzed to determine relationship among the three research constructs that are orientations of IT strategy, directions IT portfolio, and IT performance. In this study, the orientations of IT strategy have two dimensions that are operation orientation and market orientation. The directions of IT portfolio have two dimension that are internal system focused and external system focused. And the IT performance has divided into operational performance and competitive performance. As a result of this study, the companies that are putting a focus with operation orientation were concentrated on internal information systems than external information systems. On the other hand, the other companies that are focused on market orientation were concentrated on external information systems than internal information systems. Consequently, the companies that are focused on operation orientation were operational performance higher than competitive performance and the other companies that are focused on market orientation were competitive performance higher than operational performance. More importantly, the research results provide empirical evidence that supports the hypothesis related to closer fit between IT strategy and IT portfolio does lead to increase operational and competitive performance of IT. And the results emphasize manager's efforts of fit between orientations of IT strategy and directions of IT portfolio to be realized IT performance.

  • This study explores the optimal ensemble size to improve the prediction performance of the Korea Meteorological Administration's operational climate prediction system, global seasonal forecast system version 5 (GloSea5). The GloSea5 produces an ensemble of hindcast data using the stochastic kinetic energy backscattering version2 (SKEB2) and timelagged ensemble. An experiment to increase the hindcast ensemble from 3 to 14 members for four initial dates was performed and the improvement and effect of the prediction performance considering Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC), ensemble spread, and Ratio of Predictable Components (RPC) were evaluated. As the ensemble size increased, the RMSE and ACC prediction performance improved and more significantly in the high variability area. In spread and RPC analysis, the prediction accuracy of the system improved as the ensemble size increased. The closer the initial date, the better the predictive performance. Results show that increasing the ensemble to an appropriate number considering the combination of initial times is efficient.

  • We analyze the performance of South Korea wholesalers and retailers during the period when COVID-19 emerged and began to spread in South Korea. Specifically, we choose operational efficiency as a proxy variable for reflecting corporate performance and apply stochastic frontier analysis for estimating operational efficiency. Importantly, in order to examine the impact of the COVID-19 period (Q1 to Q2 2020) on operational efficiency, we consider the quarterly fixed effect corresponding to the COVID-19 period. Our findings include: (ⅰ) the average level of operational ffficiency is approximately 0.7138 during the analysis period (Q1 2019 to Q2 2020); (ⅱ) the fixed effect of the COVID-19 period on operational efficiency is not significant; and (ⅲ) operational efficiency is positively correlated with the scale of the company. Moreover, from an academic perspective, we make a contribution by examining the relationship between the operational efficiency as a firm-level variable and the COVID-19 period as a macroeconomic variable.

  • Consumer's product selection measures are being shifted from the units' operational performance to overall performance. Low noise, low vibration, and low power consumption rate, etc. which used to be additional quality indices, now become vital performance factors. Especially, noise and vibration characteristics are being considered as equivalent to/or even more critical than operational performance in certain products such as office machines and home entertainment systems, which share the same space with human being's daily life. Therefore, noise reduction and sound quality improvement technology becomes an inevitable design issue for those applications. Qualitative noise characteristics of rotating polygonal disk applied to digital printer systems are presented. Overall sound pressure level change and tonal noise variation with respect to the geometrical properties of polygonal disk, operational speed, and others are briefly discussed based on experimental results.

  • Recently, IT outsouricng has been one of the major concerns of many companies. This paper explores the relationship between information technology outsourcing risk factors and outsourcing performance. It is based upon a three-phase process utilizing IPO (Input-Process-Output) system. The first phase means the outsourcing planning risks t~at arise from overall environment of outsourcing, organizational refuse, and wrong contracts. The second phase implies outsourcing operational risks, which are occurred while out-sourcing perform and consist of organizational acceptances of outsourcing, partnership and hidden costs. The last phase is outsourcing performance based on four perspective of BSC(Blanced Scored Card). The survey was performed on the IT/IS firms, and the data was collected from 53 service receivers. The result of the analysis are as follows. First, Outsourcing planning risks positively affects the operational risks. Second, Outsourcing operational risks negatively affects the Outsourcing Performance.
