  • This study deals with capacity expansion planning of airport infrastructure in view of economic validation that reflect construction costs and social benefits according to the reduction of passengers' delay time. We first forecast the airport peak-demand which has a seasonal and cyclical feature with ARIMA model that has been one of the most widely used linear models in time series forecasting. A discrete event simulation model is built for estimating actual delay time of passengers that consider the passenger's dynamic flow within airport infrastructure after arriving at the airport. With the trade-off relationship between cost and benefit, we determine an economic quantity of conveyor that will be expanded. Through the experiment performed with the case study of Incheon international airport, we demonstrate that our approach can be an effective method to solve the airport expansion problem with seasonal passenger arrival and dynamic operational aspects in airport infrastructure.

  • Due to the recent advances in computing, communication and micro-electromechanical technology, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) applications have been extended from military to many commercial areas such as object tracking, wire detection, and vehicular sensor networks. In some applications bursty data from many sensor nodes may be generated and the generated data from the monitoring area may be sent in a limited time to the final destination, sink node. In this paper, we present a BTF-MAC protocol adequate for WSNs applications in which bursty data packets are required to be transmitted in a limited time. The BTF-MAC is a synchronous duty-cycle MAC protocol and uses a slot-reserved and operational period extension mechanism adapted to the traffics. Our numerical analysis and simulation results show that BTF-MAC outperforms other related protocols such as DW-MAC and SR-MAC in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.

  • The Hub-and-spoke strategy is widely used in the field of transportation. According to containerization and the development of transshipment technology, it is also introduced into European rail freight transportation. The objective of this article is to develop a service network design model for rail freight transportation based on the Hub-and-spoke strategy and efficient algorithms that can be applied to large-scale network. Although this model is for strategic decision, it includes not only general operational cost but also time-delay cost. The non-linearity of objective function due to time-delay factor is transformed into linearity by establishing train service variables by frequency. To solve large scale problem, this model used a heuristic method based on decomposition and three newly-developed algorithms. The new algorithms were examined with respect to four test problems base on the actual network of European rail freight and discussed the accuracy of solutions and the efficiency of proposed algorithms.

  • As critical infrastructure, bridges play an indispensable role in facilitating the distribution of goods. When bridges reach their end of useful life or get damaged by natural disasters such as earthquakes or storms, they have to be removed and reconstructed. When bridges in service need to be reconstructed, user costs occur from vehicle detours and traffic congestions, and social costs occur from noise and dust during construction periods. However, these user and social costs are not considered during reconstruction and the evaluation methods of those costs are vague. Thus, there is lack of appropriate bridge types that consider these costs. Therefore, this paper identifies the social overhead costs that occur during bridge reconstruction, which is also called, users' socioeconomic values. Next, it proposes a method to evaluate user costs during bridge reconstruction, and appraises the method. User costs are evaluated based on traffic information, social and material volumes including the bridge's daily traffic volume, peak hours, detour distance and time. In addition, time delay costs due to traffic operational costs and bridge reconstruction are also taken into consideration.

  • An important operational goal of a container terminal is to maximize the efficiency of the operation of quay cranes (QCs) that load and/or unload containers onto and from vessels. While the maximization of the efficiency of the QC operation requires minimizing the delay of yard tractors (YT) that transport containers between the storage yard and QCs, the delay is often inevitable because of traffic congestion. In this paper, we propose a method for learning a model that predicts traffic speed in a terminal using only YT operation data, even though the YT traffic is mixed with that of external trucks. Without any information on external truck traffic, we could still make a reasonable traffic forecast because the YT operation data contains information on the YT routes in the near future. The results of simulation experiments showed that the model learned by the proposed method could predict traffic speed with significant accuracy.

  • About 5 km length of tunnels were constructed by mechanized tunnelling method using closed type shield TBM. In order to avoid construction delay problems for ensuring timely electricity transmission, it is necessary to increase the prediction accuracy of the excavation process involving machines according to rock mass types. This is important to corroborate the project duration and optimum operation for various considerations involved in the machine. So, full-scale tunnelling tests were performed for developing the advance rate model to be appropriately used for 3.6 m diameter shield TBM. About 100 test cases were established and performed using various operational parameters such as thrust force and rotational speed of cuttterhead in representative uniaxial compressive strengths. Accordingly, relationships between normal force and penetration depth and, between UCS and torque were suggested which consider UCS and thrust force conditions according to weathered, soft, hard rocks. Capacity analysis of cutterhead was performed and optimum operational conditions were also suggested based on the developed model. Based on this study, it can be expected that the project construction duration can be reduced and users can benefit from the provision of earlier service.

  • Before some experiments were carried out with analog bandpass filter which used for filtering the noise included in sound source signal. And this filter was constituted by condenser, register and operational amplifier. Hut these elements made the phase characteristics to differentiate in each sensing channel and cause a little of measurement error. We made new measurement system that was substituted digital filter for the analog filter in order to develop the optimal system which could find the time delay between each sensors with high accuracy. This paper describes the new system's constitution and the function of each parts. Specially three digital filters were designed and applied to the digital signal processing Part. And a series of experiments were carried out with the source's distance 9.53meters and the random bearing interval within the limits of $0^{\circ}$ ~ $180^{\circ}$. As a result, we have recognized that the accuracy of measurements were differentiated by the methods what kind of digital filter were adopted. And we have confirmed the facts that IIR LPF was suitable for sound source's bearing measurement and FIR LPF reduced the range measurement error.

  • Presently, pedestrian's signal time models in korea are not considering Vulnerable-Pedestrian. So, the safety of Vulnerable-Pedestrian is being threatener and the number of accidents is increasing. Besides, the existing operational system for pedestrians can't offer the cross signal time in road corresponded the changing environment when the school zone is revitalized and the Silver zone is introduced for Vulnerable-Pedestrian. Conclusively, Vulnerable-Pedestrian's signal time models which are able to consider classified Vulnerable-Pedestrian speed, Vulnerable-Pedestrian perception-reaction time, Vulnerable-Pedestrian Spare(congestion-delay) time are suggested by the result of experiment in virtual crosswalk. the application of suggested models in this study to the site. It is possible to use as a basic stuff on study of pedestrian's signal time and expected to contribute the safety and mobility in future.

  • Traditional service-level agreements (SLAs), defined by average delay or packet loss, often camouflage the instantaneous performance perceived by end-users. We define a set of metrics for service availability to quantify the performance of Internet protocol (IP) backbone networks and capture the impact of routing dynamics on packet forwarding. Given a network topology and its link weights, we propose a novel technique to compute the associated service availability by taking into account transient routing dynamics and operational conditions, such as border gateway protocol (BGP) table size and traffic distributions. Even though there are numerous models for characterizing topologies, none of them provide insights on the expected performance perceived by end customers. Our simulations show that the amount of service disruption experienced by similar networks (i.e., with similar intrinsic properties such as average out-degree or network diameter) could be significantly different, making it imperative to use new metrics for characterizing networks. In the second part of the paper, we derive goodness factors based on service availability viewed from three perspectives: Ingress node (from one node to many destinations), link (traffic traversing a link), and network-wide (across all source-destination pairs). We show how goodness factors can be used in various applications and describe our numerical results.
