  • This paper proposes a controller design method for suppressing the resonance generated in the slave motor in the middle and low speed operation range, according to the load and parameter differences between two motors, during parallel operation using the master and slave method that controls two surface permanent magnet synchronous motors connected in parallel by a single inverter. The proposed resonance suppression controller is directly obtained by analyzing the resonance characteristics, using the lead controller method. Therefore, it is possible to fundamentally reduce trial and error to set the controller gain. In addition, because the proposed resonance suppression controller was designed as a lead controller, the stability region of the system increased owing to the added zero point, making the system robust with respect to parametric variations. Simulations and experiments confirmed the usefulness of the proposed method and the system's robustness with respect to parametric variations.

  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the sixth graders' understanding of concepts and operation about fraction. The test was administered and analyzed to 707 sixth graders' performance on fractions after the fraction instructions in elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. The participants are asked to answer two sets of questions for 40 minutes. First, they are asked to answer to 16 problems about the concepts of fraction with respect to part-whole, ratio, operator, measure, quotient, equivalent, and operations. Second, specially, to investigate sixth graders' ability of drawing and describing the situation of division including fraction, the descriptive problem asked students (1) to describe $3\;{\div}\;\frac{1}{2}$ into pictorial representation and (2) to write the solving process. The participants of this study didn't show deep understandings about the concepts and operation of fraction. The degree of understanding of subconstructs of fraction shows that their knowledge of ratio concept with respect to fraction was highest while their understanding of measure with respect to fraction was lowest. Considering their wrong answers, about 59% of participants showed misconception to the question of naming one fraction that appears between $\frac{1}{5}$ and $\frac{1}{6}$. Further, they didn't explain their understanding with drawing about the division of fraction ($3\;{\div}\;\frac{1}{2}$).

  • This study was conducted to establish a colostomy technique using cannulation in white Leghorn male chicks. A everted rectum method was used for colostomy from 3 to 20 months old roosters. After 2 or 3 days of operation, blood clots were taken off. At this time, a cannula was also inserted into artificisal annus to keep it open. The cannula was regularly exchanged at every 7 to 10 days. Polyethylene bag and plastic beaker were used for feces and urine collection, respect-ively. The present paper describes the methods of operation, cannulation after colostomy recturn and post-operation management. This method has succeeded in colostomising chickens that survive as long as their normal counterparts.

  • Selection of the best operating rule among a set of alternatives for a multipurpose reservoir system operation requires to evaluate many minor criteria in addition to the major objectives assessed to the system. These problems are sufficiently complex and difficult that they are beyond heuristic decision rules and experiences in case several noncommensurable multiple criteria are included in the evaluation. With the assistance of multicriterion decision analysis techniques, it is possible to select the best one among various alternatives by systematically comparing and ranking the alternatives with respect to the criteria of choice. Evaluation criteria for multipurpose reservoir system operating rules were identified and defined, and the multicriterion decision analysis techniques were applied to evaluate the four existing operating rules of the Chungju multipurpose project according to the identified nine multiple criteria. The application results show that the methodology is very efficient to select the best operation alternative among a finite number of operating rules with many evaluation criteria for a large-scale reservoir system operation.

  • Along with the wide acceptance of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN), new applications such as Internet protocol (IP) telephony over WLAN are fast emerging today. For battery-powered IP phone devices, the life time extension is a key concern for the market acceptance while today's 802.11 is not optimized for snch an operation. In this paper, we propose a novel idle mode operation, which comprises paging, idle handoff, and delayed handoff. Under the idle mode operation, a mobile host(MH) without any active session does not need to perform handoff within a predefined paging area (PA). Only when it enters a new PA, an idle handoff is performed. The proposed idle mode allows an MH without traffic to extend its life time. We develop a new analytical model in order to comparatively evaluate our proposed scheme. The numerical resnlts demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes with respect to power consumption.

  • The objective of this study is to find the optimal operational planning of the hybrid cooling system, which is combined by ice storage system and the absorption chiller. The optimization technique used in this study is dynamic programming. The objective function is summed cost during a day including charge and discharge periods of ice storage system and operation time of absorption chiller. Assuming that initially ice storage tank is stored fully and the cooling load is perfectly predicted for the operational planning. This method provides the most efficient and economic combination of equipment operational planning for cooling with respect to energy consumption cost.

  • In this paper, Operation characteristics of the active clamp(ACL) zero-voltage-switching(ZVS) forward converter(FC) and active clamp hard- switching(HS) forward converter are compared with respect to loss analysis. The losses of semiconductor (including conduction losses and switching losses), transformer(containing the core loss and copper loss) and parasitic element of passive element (capacitor, inductor) are measured and compared for each type. For an experiment we have built 50W ACL ZVS-FC and ACL HS-FC, in which the switching frequency is 200kHz, and test it. The experimental results show that both types of operation have nearly same characteristics.

  • In this article, a new model based on Lomax distribution is introduced. This new model is both useful and practical in areas such as economic, reliability and life testing. Some statistical properties of this model are presented including moments, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate, mean residual life and mean inactivity time functions, among others. It is also shown that the distributions of the new model are ordered with respect to the strongest likelihood ratio ordering. The method of moment and maximum likelihood estimation are used to estimates the unknown parameters. Simulation is utilized to calculate the unknown shape parameter and to study its properties. Finally, to illustrate the concepts, the appropriateness of the new model for real data sets are included.

  • The public transportation in operation or to be planned domestically includes subway, LRT, bimodal tram and bus, which are independently characterized in their passenger capacity and cost. High quality service is generally accompanied by high cost of construction and operation. Thus, ITS, BIS/BMS and BRT system are recently introduced to provide high quality service to the passengers with the cost as low as possible. The bimodal tram is under development to achieve such goals in public transportation. The passenger capacity is approximately expected to be 10,000$\sim$17,000 persons/hour and the construction cost to be 10$\sim$30 million dollars/km. It is possible to construct the infrastructure gradually depending on the demand of transportation in the planned route, which can effectively reduce the initial cost to launch the service. The bimodal tram is developed to provide the advantages of subway and bus to the passengers with respect to the scheduled operation and flexibility of the lines.

  • Interface control activities during the nuclear power plant (NPP) construction and operation have been reviewed for enhancing the safety of NPP. The primary focus of the study is given on analysis of lessons learned from the recent significant events of Korean Standard Nuclear Power plant (KSNP), such as a series of break-off of thermal sleeves at YGN 5 & 6 and radioactivity leak at YGN 5, in respect of interface control. Based on the results of the analysis, this study recommends measures for the improvement of interface control among utility and technical supporting organizations (TSO), and suggests new regulatory systems, such as reporting of safety significant non-conformances, to effectively verify the adequacy of interface control activities during construction and operation of NPPs.
