Purpose: This study was done to describe nurses' experience of incivility in hospitals and to consider nurses' work environment. Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi' phenomenological analysis methodology. Participants were seven experienced clinical nurses working on a general ward (2 nurses), or in an intensive care unit (2 nurses), emergency room (2 nurses), or operating room (1 nurse). Results: The incivility that nurses experienced was categorized as follows: 'being afflicted as a weak person', 'being treated as less than a professional', 'being overwhelmed by shock and anger', 'experiencing an untenable situation', 'struggling to survive', and 'pursuing professional growth'. Conclusion: Behavior guidelines should be developed to reduce incivility, and incivility cases should be continuously monitored by the nursing department. Also, to handle incivility problems in clinical nursing areas, a reporting and counseling system and education programs are needed.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to compare the level of perception and to identify factors associated with perception on patient safety culture among health care providers working in an operating room(OR). Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Data were collected conveniently from 154 RNs and 116 physicians working in a tertiary hospital in Seoul. Patient safety culture was measured using "The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture" developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Spearman rank correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis with the SPSS version 17.0. Results: The perception level of nurses and physicians on patient safety culture was "moderate" (3.14). Compared to physicians, nurses showed a significantly lower perception on the items of "teamwork within units" (t=-6.904, p<.001) and "overall perception of patient safety" (t=-4.327, p<.001), but had a higher perception about "frequency of events reported" (t=2.769, p=.006). The physicians' professional positions, years of working experience, age, and working hour per week were identified as factors associated with patient safety culture. Conclusion: Level of perception on patient safety culture may vary among health care providers working in the OR. The study finding suggests that a tailored education and training strategies should be considered to develop an effective safety culture for healthcare professionals working in OR.

Purpose: The Purpose of this study was to development a verbal abuse scale for operating room nurses in Korea. Method: To achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire was developed to interview 30 nurses and distributed to 761 nurses who working at 28 general hospital in Korea from september 7 to November 25, 2004. Item analysis and factor analysis were carried out to validate violence predicting scale. Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was used to test reliability of the scale. The data were analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 11.5 program. Result: As a result of the item analysis and factor analysis, 17 items were selected from the total of 30 items, and four factors were labeled as 'self esteem abuse by nurses(7 items)', 'self esteem abuse by physicians(6 items)', 'sexual abuse by physicians(2 items)', 'colleague abuse by physicians(2 items)'. Four factors were explained by 60.8% out of the total variance. The first factor explained 35.456%, second factor explained 12.401% and third factor explained 6.637%. And fourth factor explained 6.304%. Reliability of the factors were tested by Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and result was 0.885. Conclusion: The scale was identified to be a tool with a high degree of reliability and validity. Therefore, this scale can be effectively utilized for assessment of verbal abuse for operating room nurses by nurses and physicians in Korea.
Purpose: This study was to develop, implement, and evaluate an e-learning education program for improving practical knowledge and preventing nursing errors and adverse events of nurses working in the operating room (OR). Method: The e-learning program was developed and evaluated according to the following processes: 1) preparation phase 2) implementation phase 3) evaluation phase. In evaluation phase, the effectiveness was analyzed based on the Kirkpatrick's model. Results: The e-learning program consisted of OR basic nursing skills and techniques and nursing activities' manual based on the categories of nursing errors: surgical operation preparation, nursing skills and techniques, environment management, patient safety and comfort, and patient monitoring. The program was provided through on-line, http://cafe.daum.net/pnuhorn, for 4 weeks. The mean score(percent) of participants' satisfaction was $21.24{\pm}1.71$(68.2%). Their total knowledge level was significantly improved(Z=-3.00, p=.003) and specifically in the category of environment management(Z=-3.77, p<.001) and patient monitoring(Z=-2.46, p=.014). The occurrence of nursing errors or adverse events was a little decreased, but not statistically significant(Z=-3.10, p=.756). Conclusion: E-learning for nurses is one way of effective and efficient teaching-learning strategies. For better e-learning, it is important to develop the vital content of the education and objective measures for detecting nursing errors and adverse events.
Purpose: This study was designed to identify knowledge, attitude, environment, and self-efficacy among perioperative nurses in terms of radiation protection and to describe those factors affecting radiation protection behaviors. Methods: The sample was comprised of 128 perioperative nurses who agreed to participate in this descriptive study. Data were collected from a self-administered questionnaire and were analyzed using the t-test, analysis of variance, Mann-whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Results: Radiation protection behaviors were significantly different by participant's gender, length of career as a perioperative nurse, educational level and prior experience with radiation protection education. Radiation protection behaviors were significantly correlated with radiation protection environment and self-efficacy in terms of radiation protection behaviors. In the multiple linear regression models, radiation protection environment and self-efficacy on radiation protection behaviors were statistically significant predictors of radiation protection behaviors, which accounted for 50.3% of variance in dependent variable. Conclusion: This study concluded that radiation protective environment in operating room is important to promote radiation protective behaviors and radiation safety management program to enhance self-efficacy is highly recommended.

This study was to identify the effects of supportive nursing intervention using video-program of operating room nurses before operation on laparoscopic hysterectomy patient's anxiety. This study was nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. The data were collected from May 1 to Jun 20, 2013 and analyzed by $x^2-test$, Fisher's exact test and t-test using SPSS 20.0 program. Experimental group(who received supportive nursing intervention) and control group(who received booklet education) was respectively consisted of 25 patients who were laparoscopy hysterectomy. The anxiety(p=.002) of experimental group was significantly lower than control group. The systolic(p=.012) and diastolic(p=.045) pressure of experimental group was significantly lower than control group, but pulse wasn't. The supportive nursing intervention for preoperative patient is considered effective and useful in reducing anxiety. Further research is warranted to investigate the supportive nursing intervention long-term effect.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present a model for R.N. and nursing students. Methods: Main primary sources were certificates, writings, news and articles. On the basis of them, her life was described over time and analyzed on the secondary sources. Results: Park Myungja faced Korean War as a nursing student and became the military officer of nursing. In 1950s and 1960s she worked hard to improve the operation room nursing. And she devoted herself to improve nursing education and help her students. Park Myungja became a military training teacher in 1972 and included first aid with the military training course. As a researcher of Korean National Open University, she tried to develop a course that R.N.s can receive a bachelor's degree in Nursing. Her last formal career was the head of a middle school, and she established the first nursery facility for the teachers. After the retirement, she devoted herself to the volunteer works, especially such as the hospice care, free clothes making, and Taichi teaching to arthritis patients. Conclusion: Park's life has been that of a R.N and volunteer. She has been very creative to find what she could do and pioneering to accomplish them.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of job stress and organizational commitment, as well as to identify the factors that influence patient safety management activities among the operating room nurses. Participants were 136 nurses working at 1 university hospital and 9 general hospitals located in G metropolitan city. The data were collected between July 25 and August 7, 2014 using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS version 21.0. The level of job stress, organizational commitment, and patient safety management activities was 3.76, 3.09, and 4.15, respectively, out of a 5-point scale. Patient safety management activities were significantly correlated with organizational commitment. The significant factors that influence patient safety management activities were organizational commitment and number of patient safety education, which explained 23% of patient safety management activities. In conclusion, organizational commitment and patient safety education have a positive effect on the improvement of patient safety management activities of operating room nurses. It is necessary to develop various intervention programs for operating room nurses to improve organizational commitment and should be reinforced via continuous, systematic patient safety education on patient safety management.
Purpose: Purpose of this study was to identify the effect of structured information on immediate preoperative anxiety and uncertainty for women undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Methods: Sixty women who were admitted for total laparoscopic hysterectomy were recruited at a university hospital in Gyeonggi-do from June to October 2014. Thirty women were assigned to either the experimental or the control group. Women in the experimental group were provided structured information, which consisted of visual and auditory materials about surgical preparation and process, practical experience on devices such as IV-PCA pump and Inspiro-meter and actual experience on route to go to the operating room. State-anxiety, uncertainty, and blood pressure and pulse rate as biological indicators were measured before and after the intervention to examine the effect. Results: Significant group differences were found on state anxiety, uncertainty, including ambiguity, inconsistency, and unpredictability at the holding area. There was a significant difference on pulse rate in the operating room between the two groups. Conclusion: Findings demonstrated that the structured information provided for women undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy preoperatively was effective on immediate preoperative anxiety and uncertainty. Nurses may contribute to decreasing patients' anxiety and uncertainty by utilizing this structured information preoperatively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument to explore and measure job satisfaction as perceived by perioperative nurses, specifically from the perspective of contemporary perioperative nursing in Korea. Method: Items (69) were developed from the responses to two open-ended questions by 168 perioperative nurses in one teaching hospital; (a) reasons that make work enjoyable, (b) reasons that make work unpleasant. Finally 55 items were selected, excluding items with lower correlation with the total scale. The instrument was completed by 885 perioperative nurses from 89 different hospitals nationwide who were attending the annual conference of the Korean Association Operating Room Nurses (KAORN), yielding a response rate of 95.6%. Results: Ten factors were extracted by factor analysis, which explained 60.0% of the total variance; Reliability and internal consistency were established (Cronbach's alpha=.95). A smaller sample of 39 perioperative nurses completed the instrument on two occasions, with a 2-week interval between. Mean scores were computed and two sets of scores were analyzed by Weighted Kappa (W-Kappa=0.680, p=.029). Conclusion: This instrument is a concise, highly practical and flexible tool, which can be used for the perioperative nurse in a wide range of hospital settings.
