  • High temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) using phosphoric acid (PA) doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes have been concentrated as one of solutions to the limits with traditional low temperature PEMFCs. However, the amount of reported experimental data is not enough to catch the operational characteristics correlated with cell performance and durability. In this study, design of experiments (DOE) based operational optimization method for high temperature PEMFCs has been proposed. Response surface method (RSM) is very useful to effectively analyze target system's characteristics and to optimize operating conditions for a short time. Thus RSM using central composite design (CCD) as one of methodologies for design of experiments (DOE) was adopted. For this work, the statistic models which predict the performance and degradation rate with respect to the operating conditions have been developed. The developed performance and degradation models exhibit a good agreement with experimental data. Compared to the existing arbitrary operation, the expected cell lifetime and average cell performance during whole operation could be improved by optimizing operating conditions. Furthermore, the proposed optimization method could find different new optimal solutions for operating conditions if the target lifetime of the fuel cell system is changed. It is expected that the proposed method is very useful to find optimal operating conditions and enhance performance and durability for many other types of fuel cell systems.

  • This paper shows that inlet humidity condition at cathode side is one of dominant parameters affecting the performance of PEMFC. To investigate effects of inlet humidity condition, the performance measurements were conducted for a single PEMFC with two operating variables : cathode relative humidity and dry condition in anode dry. The fuel cell employed for the experiments is a unit PEMFC with a 25$Cm^2$, Nafion$^(R)$112 membrane. As a result of this study, the cell performance is getting higher by increasing inlet humidity condition at cathode side. The cell performance is different from each operating temperature an it has maximum30% higher than dry condition at 60$^{\circ}C$ operating temperature with 80% relative humidity.

  • This study attempts to measure the financial performance of the food distribution company. In order to achieve the goal, this study have measured the ratios of ROE, ROA applying the DuPont analysis, which have been demonstrated with tables to show the change periodically. DuPont analysis is based on analysis of Return on Equity (ROE) & Return on Investment (ROI). The return on equity disaggregate performance into three components: Net Profit Margin, Total Asset Turnover, and the Equity Multiplier. The return on investment consists of Assets Turnover (Operating Income${\times}$Total Assets) and Profit Margin (EBIT${\times}$Operating Income). From the study it if found that Hyundae Green Food's Financial performance is high followed by Foodmerce and then Dongwon home food and Lotte Food. The four companies are significant at their level. In conclusion, ROE & ROI is the most comprehensive measure of profitability of a firm. It considers the operating and investing decisions can be made as well as the financing and their leverage-related decisions.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the effects of the combination of the different wire mesh number in a regenerator and the tube number in a cooler on the cooling performance of a Vuilleumier cycle heat pump. Effects of operating conditions, such as charging pressure, operating speed, and heat input, on the cooling performance are also studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that the cooling performance could be improved with the proper combination of different wire meshes in a regenerator. More tubes in a cooler are desirable for better cooling performance. It is also found that the cooling capacity is enhanced, whereas COP is reduced with an increase in the heater tube temperature and the revolution speed. Both the cooling capacity and COP are incereased with a higher charging pressure.

  • Most researches for power management have focused on increasing the utilization of system performance by scaling operating frequency or operating voltage. If operating frequency is changed frequently, it reduces the real system performance. To reduce power consumption, alternative approaches use the limited number of operating frequencies or set the smoothing frequencies during execution to increase the system performance, but they are not suitable for real time applications. To reduce power consumption and increase system performance for real time applications, this paper proposes a new power-aware schedule method by allocating operating frequencies and by setting smoothing frequencies. The algorithm predicts so that frequencies with continuous interval are mapped into discrete operating frequencies. The frequency smoothing reduces overheads of systems caused by changing operating frequencies frequently as well as power consumption caused by the frequency mismatch at a wide frequency interval. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces the power consumption up to 40% at maximum and 15% on average compared to the CC RT-DVS.

  • Efficient operation of induction motor at light loads has been getting wide attention recently because the operating of induction motor at light loads occupies big portion of its operating regions in many applications such as environment friendly vehicle. As one of approaches to improve efficiency, Adaptive Maximum Torque Per Amp (Adaptive MTPA) control for induction motor drives has been proposed to achieve a desired torque with the minimum possible stator current. However, the Adaptive MTPA control was validated only at heavy load where, in general, control scheme tends to perform better than at light loads since the error in measurement of sensors is lower and signal to noise is better. Thus, although the performance of a control scheme is good at rated operating point, its performance at light load is somewhat in doubt in practice. This has led to considerable interest in efficiency of Adaptive MTPA control at light loads. This work experimentally demonstrates performance of Adaptive MTPA control at light loads regardless of rotor resistance variation, thus showing its good performance over all operating conditions.

  • It is significant to predict the performance degradation of complex electromechanical systems. Among the existing performance degradation prediction models, belief rule base (BRB) is a model that deal with quantitative data and qualitative information with uncertainty. However, when analyzing dynamic systems where observable indicators change frequently over time and working conditions, the traditional belief rule base (BRB) can not adapt to frequent changes in working conditions, such as the prediction of aeroengine performance degradation considering working condition. For the sake of settling this problem, this paper puts forward a new hidden belief rule base (HBRB) prediction method, in which the performance of aeroengines is regarded as hidden behavior, and operating conditions are used as observable indicators of the HBRB model to describe the hidden behavior to solve the problem of performance degradation prediction under different times and operating conditions. The performance degradation prediction case study of turbofan aeroengine simulation experiments proves the advantages of HBRB model, and the results testify the effectiveness and practicability of this method. Furthermore, it is compared with other advanced forecasting methods. The results testify this model can generate better predictions in aspects of accuracy and interpretability.

  • This study examines whether the firm with high innovation efficiency realizes high operating performance. We measured innovation efficiency by the ratio of patent applications for R&D expenditure or R&D stock and measured operating performance by the ratio of operating income or operating cash flow to total assets for the following year. The sample consists of 1,880 manufacturing firm-years, which listed on the Korean Exchange between 2014 and 2017. We analyze the effect of innovation efficiency on operating performance using a model of Hirshleifer et al. (2013) results show that both innovation efficiency variables have a significantly positive relationship with the total asset operating margin. Besides, the following year's performance, measured by the total asset operating cash flow ratio, also shows a positive relationship with the two innovation efficiency variables at the 5% and 1% significance levels, respectively. The results indicate that high innovation efficiency firms that link the outcomes of R&D to more patent applications realize higher operating performance. Also, we divided the R&D-intensive and non-R&D-intensive industries and performed the same analysis. As a result, the innovation efficiency has a significant positive effect on operating margin in both industries. However, the effect of innovation efficiency on the operating cash flow is only significant in R&D-intensive industries. This study suggests that the effects of innovation efficiency are more consistent in the R&D-intensive industry. Additionally, we divided the high patent application and low patent applications industries and performed the same analysis. As a result, the innovation efficiency has a significant positive effect on operating margin in both industries. This study suggests that the effects of innovation efficiency are more consistent in the high patent application industry. We show that a firm's innovation efficiency is a critical factor for a firm's performance, while prior studies on the R&D performance have not considered the innovation efficiency of each firm. The evidence suggests that firms not only consider R&D expenditures but also improve the performance of companies by increasing innovation efficiency. Investors need to consider their innovation efficiency when evaluating the value of firms.
