  • Experimental analysis of the spray characteristics of the movable sleeve injector, which can simultaneously control the area of the annular gap and the pintle gap, has been studied and a method for controlling the uniform performance over a wide thrust range has been studied. It is confirmed that the design flow rate is not satisfied when the constant pressure difference is set regardless of the opening distance of the sleeve. In order to improve this, the differential pressure in the annular gap and the pintle gap was applied differently according to the opening distance. It was confirmed that the design flow rate was satisfied within the operating range and thrust control was linear from 25% to 100% in linear sleeve area.

  • Pipelines subjected to ground movement would be easily exposed to large-scale deformation. Since such deformations may cause the pipeline failure, it is important to ensure the safety of pipelines in various operation conditions. However, crack in weld metal have been considered as one of the main causes that can deteriorate the structural integrity of the pipeline. For this reason, the structural integrity of the pipe containing the crack in the weld should be obtained. In order to assess cracked pipe, J-integral and crack-tip opening displacement(CTOD) have been applied widely as the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameters representing crack driving force. In this study, engineering solutions to calculate the J-integral and CTOD of pipes with a circumferential outer surface crack in the weld are proposed. For this purpose, 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element(FE) analyses have been performed considering the effect of overmatch and width of weld. The shape of the weld was simplified to I-groove, and axial displacement was employed as for loading condition. Based on FE results, the effects of crack size, material properties and width of weldment on J-integral and CTOD were investigated. Additionally, the J-integral and CTOD for I-groove were compared with those for V-groove to examine the effects of the weld shape, and a proportionality coefficient of J-integral and CTOD was calculated from the results of this paper.

  • Sound waves and acoustic energy generated by two identical TA (ThermoAcoustic) lasers were analyzed and studied. One end of the ceramic stack was heated by a thin NiCr wire wound around that end. The other end of the stack was cooled by natural convection of atmospheric air. The wavelength of the sound waves generated by a single TA laser was four times the tube length and the amplitude of the waves increased with the heating rate. SPL (SoundPressure Level) meters and microphones were employed to measure and study the sound waves at different distances from the glass tube opening and at the focusing point of the TA laser pair for different laser position arrangements. The sound waves of the two TA lasers at the focusing point were found to be almost 180 degrees out of phase when the openings of the two lasers were very close to each other and the angle between the laser axes was small. When the two TA lasers were placed far apart, the sound wave amplitudes and the phase difference between the two laser outputs varied periodically with time. The frequencies of the sound waves changed when the openings of the two TA lasers were in close vicinity and the angle between the laser axes exceeded a certain value. In this case, the glass tube opening was no longer a pressure anti-node and the wavelength of the fundamental mode was not equal to four times the tube length.

  • In this paper, a numerical analysis was conducted on the effect of the flow control valve of a oscillation water column(OWC) type wave power generator turbine. The OWC wave power turbine operates with compressed air in the air chamber according to the change of wave height. When the wave height changes rapidly, a flow control valve is required due to overload of the turbine and reduced efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, a flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees was installed in the front of the turbine, and the pressure drop, torque, and overall performance were calculated according to the change of turbine RPM and flow rate of turbine inlet. In conclusion, the flow control valve with an opening angle of 60 degrees affects when the turbine rotates at low rotation and the inlet flow rate is large. But it does not have a significant effect on overall turbine performance and it is necessary to find the optimal angle in the future works.

  • From simultaneous recordings of the external photoglottography, intra-oral air pressure (Pio), airflow and acoustic data from four native Seoul Korean speakers (2 male and 2 female), we have found that the two fricatives are not significantly different in glottal opening peak and airflow peak height either word-initially or word-medially and that the duration of aspiration is significantly reduced in word-medial /s/, compared to those in word-initial /s/, not in /s'/. We have also found that the duration of a high Pio plateau is significantly longer in /s/ than in /s'/ both word-initially and word-medially and that airflow resistance (R=Pio/U) at the onset and offset of a Pio plateau and at the time of airflow peak height is significantly higher in /s'/ than in /s/ across the contexts. However, the differences in Pio peak and F0 are not significant. In addition, the transition time to reach airflow peak height from the offset of a Pio plateau is found to be significantly longer in /s/ than /s'/ in both word-initial and word-medial positions. No significant differences in glottal opening peak and airflow peak height confirm that /s/ is specified as [-spread glottis] like /s'/. As for the other significant differences, we propose that /s/ is [-tense], and /s'/ [+tense].

  • The smoke control systems using pressure differentials are already well known as the most reliable method to prevent the smoke infiltration into the emergency stairs or safe spaces. However, it is true that many problems are domestically pointed out due to the insufficient understanding and technology on the smoke control systems using pressure differentials. In this regard, this work analyzed the effect of major factors for smoke control system using pressure differentials such as a duct area, opening area of air supply damper, improvement on open vestibules, stack effect and location of air supply. In conclusion, adequate pressure differentials can not be maintained in small duct because the smaller duct area have the large friction loss. Especially, It is confirmed that the major factor for deterioration of smoke control system performance is stack effect that makes pressure differentials smaller in the lower floors.

  • If the seabed is exposed to high waves for a long period, the pore water pressure may be excessive, making the seabed subject to liquefaction. As the water pressure change due to wave action is transmitted to the pore water pressure of the seabed, a phase difference will occur because of the fluid resistance from water permeability. Thus, the effective stress of the seabed will be decreased. If a composite breakwater or other structure with large wave reflection is installed over the seabed, a partial standing wave field is formed, and thus larger wave loading is directly transmitted to the seabed, which considerably influences its stability. To analyze the 3-D dynamic response characteristics of the seabed around a composite breakwater, this study performed a numerical simulation by applying LES-WASS-3D to directly analyze the wave-structure-soil interaction. First, the waveform around the composite breakwater and the pore water pressure in the seabed and rubble mound were compared and verified using the results of existing experiments. In addition, the characteristics of the wave field were analyzed around the composite breakwater, where there was an opening under different incident wave conditions. To analyze the effect of the changed wave field on the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed, the correlation between the wave height distribution and pore water pressure distribution of the seabed was investigated. Finally, the numerical results for the perpendicular phase difference of the pore water pressure were aggregated to understand the characteristics of the 3-D dynamic response of the seabed around the composite breakwater in relation to the water-structure-soil interaction.

  • Composite motor cases fabricated by the filament winding method are structurally weak in the dome when they are required to withstand the internal pressure of the combustion gas. In this study, a finite element analysis is conducted to compare the burst pressure of a composite dome according to the variation of the pressure distribution ratio(PDR). The performance of the composite motor case was compared quantitatively by calculating the stress on the inner and outer dome surfaces and metal boss volume. As a result, the critical point of the failure mode was observed at a PDR between 2.5 and 3.0. A design at a PDR of 2.5-3.5 can reduce the weight of metal boss without fluctuation in the burst pressure of the combustion motor case. Moreover as the design reference value changes according to the dome shape and opening size, further analysis and testing are necessary.

  • This study is attempted to correct an error of electronic blood pressure meter with an optical sensor. In general, for a hospitalized patient, ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiration are basically measured to monitor the patient's condition. Opening of a blood vessel after it is occluded by pressurizing the cuff influences the blood flow of peripheral blood vessels as well as oscillation changes in the cuff. Blood vessels are occluded and peripheral blood flow disappears at cuff pressure above the examinee's blood pressure, while blood vessels are opened and peripheral blood flow appears again at cuff pressure under the examinee's blood pressure. Then Disappear-Appear Point Length(DAPL) of peripheral blood flow can be judged with the signal of peripheral blood flow, thus is available as a factor of error correction for electronic blood pressure meter. Also, systolic or diastolic blood pressure can be corrected with Appear-Point-Pressure(APP) of cuff pressure at a point where blood flow occurs and Appear-Maximum Pressure(AMP) of cuff pressure at the maximum amplitude point of peripheral blood flow after peripheral blood flow appears again. For verification, 27 examinees were selected, and their blood value was obtained through experimental procedure of 4 stages including induction of blood pressure change. The examinees were divided into two groups of experimental group and control group, regression analysis was conducted for experimental group, and correction of a blood pressure error was verified with optical signal by applying the regression equation calculated in experimental group to control group. As an experimental result, mean of the whole measurement errors was 5mmHg or more, which did not meet the standard fur blood pressure meter. As a result of correcting blood pressure measurements with data of DAPL, APP, and AMP as drawn out of PPG signal, systolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure were $-0.6{\pm}4.4mmHg,\;-1.0{\pm}3.9mmHg$ and $-1.3{\pm}5.4mmHg$, respectively, indicating that mean of the whole measurement errors was greatly improved, and standard deviation was decreased.

  • We proposed a numerical method to simulate the hydro-mechanical behavior of rock fracture using a grain-based distinct element model (GBDEM) in the paper. As a part of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G, we verified the method via benchmarks with analytical solutions. DECOVALEX-2023 Task G aims to develop a numerical method to estimate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes within the crystalline rock fracture network. We represented the rock sample as a group of tetrahedral grains and calculated the interaction of the grains and their interfaces using 3DEC. The micro-parameters of the grains and interfaces were determined by a new methodology based on an equivalent continuum approach. In benchmark modeling, a single fracture embedded in the rock was examined for the effects of fracture inclination and roughness, the boundary stress condition and the applied pressure. The simulation results showed that the developed numerical model reasonably reproduced the fracture slip induced by boundary stress condition, the fracture opening induced by fluid injection, the stress distribution variation with fracture inclination, and the fracture roughness effect. In addition, the fracture displacements associated with the opening and slip showed good agreement with the analytical solutions. We expect the numerical model to be enhanced by continuing collaboration and interaction with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G and validated in further study experiments.
