  • The objective of this study is developing an instrument for investigating views of the respondents on nature of science(NOS) by using experienced scientific knowledge, atomic model. It consists of total six questions and 36 detail items, and each question is reflected the aspects of different NOS which are 'recognition on the model', 'tentativeness of scientific knowledge', 'subjectivity in science', 'use of inference and imagination', 'myths of the scientific method', and 'comparison between science and art'. Particularly, 'comparison between science and art' is addressed almost for the first time in this questionnaire. In the class environment almost not to teach nature of science linking with concrete scientific knowledge, to inquire how the students recognize nature of science, relating to experienced scientific knowledge through this questionnaire will give the data of scientific knowledge based recognition on the nature of science and an important implication for nature of science teaching with concrete scientific knowledge. Developing processes have gone through four steps. In first step, we chose aspects of NOS and developed questions and details. In second step, we tested the draft into fifteen science teachers and, reflecting their opinions, corrected the form and contents of questionnaires. In third step, we tested the questionnaire included writing section for expressing thoughts of the respondents into 55 students in science high school and checked index of coincidence between Likert and open-ended responses which shows 88.2% degree of consensus. Furthermore, to identify the feature of using concrete scientific knowledge we applied this and views on science and education questionnaires together into six university students. We performed final test to 68 university students and measured Cronbach's, and ultimately completed final questionnaire in last step.

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify and compare the underlying design theory of contemporary European and Japanese fashion designers by using the qualitative research method of grounded theory developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) and Glaser (1978). In this research, four fashion sites-Paris, Milan, London and Tokyo-were selected. The researcher stayed in each site for a period of two to three weeks for the purpose of data collection. A total of 60 fashion designers, educators, students and journalists were interviewed. 53 open-ended design questionnaires were returned by fashion designers and students. 19 on-site observations of fashion designers and educators were done. Grounded theories of fashion designers were synthesized from in-depth interviews, participant observations and questionnaire surveys of fashion designers, students and educators. The results of theory-building research suggested that there were significant differences between the grounded design theories of European and Japanese fashion designers due to their various cultural contexts.

  • In this paper we present a cognitive developmental analysis of the arithmetic mean concept. This analysis leads us to a hierarchical classification at different levels of understanding of the responses of 227 students to a questionnaire which combines open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The SOLO theoretical framework is used for this analysis and we find five levels of students' responses. These responses confirm different types of difficulties encountered by students regarding their conceptualization of the arithmetic mean. Also we have observed that there are no significant differences between secondary school and university students' responses.

  • This study investigated consumer satisfaction and dissatisfaction experiences in post-purchase product return process. As an exploratory research the study collected qualitative data of subjective consumer experiences using an open-ended questionnaire and identified and classified themes and patterns of satisfaction and dissatisfaction experiences. A total of 113 cases were categorized into satisfied experiences, unsatisfied experiences, and neutral experiences. Further, satisfied experiences were sub-categorized into kind sales associates, quick and easy return process, and services higher than expected based on sources of satisfaction in the return process while unsatisfied experiences were sub-classified into rejection of return, attitude of sales associates, and hassle of return process. In-store adaptive behaviors and intentions on future behaviors were also observed. The results indicated that service quality in the post-purchase service encounter and consumer expectation were important in determining satisfaction and dissatisfaction in the return process. Insights for research questions were proposed.

  • This study attempted to understand post-purchase consumer return experiences which had not received much attention in consumer behavior research. As a first step to understand return experiences from consumers' viewpoint, the study took an exploratory approach and identified themes and patterns from subjective consumer experiences. Whenever possible, attribution theory was applied to interpret the identified patterns. A total of 99 cases were collected from an open-ended questionnaire and analyzed based on a qualitative method. The reasons of product return was classified into five groups: changing mind; product defects; unsuitable products; products not expected; and for a better deal. External attribution was observed for return decisions caused by consumers' changed mind as well as by product defects. Dissatisfaction with defected products seemed to be intensified or reduced by service failure or success in the post-purchase service encounter. Consumer expectation and situations seemed to affect this process. Overall, the study supported attribution theory in the post-purchase return experience, and insights for research questions were proposed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing students in Korea who used concept mapping for understanding pathophysiology. Methods: The data were collected using an open-ended questionnaire from 83 sophomore nursing students after studying concept mapping in pathophysiology class. Each group consisted of five nursing students submitting four concept maps regarding cell injury, inflammation, infection, and neoplasm. After familiarity with concept mapping, the participants wrote their experiences anonymously on sheets of paper. The submitted materials were analyzed via qualitative content analysis. Results: The collected materials were classified into 3 themes, 8 categories, and 18 subcategories. Three themes emerged: (1) awareness of capabilities, (2) difficulties of completion, and (3) benefits of application. Conclusion: The study revealed that participants experienced self-capabilities, and the difficulties and benefits of concept mapping. Concept mapping also provided the opportunity for nursing students to realize communication skill improvement by active group discussion within a group.

  • In this study concerns of parents of gifted children were analyzed. More specifically, this study attempted to classify concerns of parents of gifted children into categories and prioritize concerns in terms of frequency parent indicated. Fifty-two parents whose children are gifted participated in this study and completed open-ended questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using content analysis and frequency analysis. The results of this study revealed that concerns of parents of gifted children were classified into six categories and sixteen subcategories, and personal trait among six categories was most frequently indicated by parents. The implications of these results for educational and counseling practice were discussed with several limitations of this research and suggestions for future research were made.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the role and issues of housing management under the community care system which cover the middle class older people. Research method was qualitative research by the interview of 21 subjects with open-ended questionnaire. Most of the older people want to live in the community alone with poor supporting system, because present community care system does not established well, so it cannot cover the staying put service for independent living, such as community alarm, care and repair, handyman, floating support, and meal service within the community. The result showed that community care might be partially avaliable from the welfare center but not well established or transfer to Dong-Office as an agency of community welfare center. However, the subjects had higher needs about housing management for older people than previous study on the hypothetical level. Successful pilot project might be required to develop the community care system focused on housing management for older people.

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate Korean university students' understanding of the structure of the atom based on a Lakatosian view. In this study, we examined twenty-three Korean university students' understandings of atomic structure using an open-ended questionnaire. The participants were all junior students majoring in chemistry education in Korea. The characteristics of students' understanding were categorized into three philosophical stances based on the classification criteria. Assertions were constructed concerning students' written descriptions of the development of scientific knowledge with respect to atomic structure: (a) characteristics of positivist response; (b) characteristics of transitional response; (c) characteristics of Lakatosian response; and (d) tendencies in students' responses.

  • For the purpose of identifying alternative conceptions in biology held by both elementary and secondary school students, an open-ended questionnaire in the six areas of biology was devised and administered to both 21 elementary school science teachers and 32 secondary biology teachers. Results have Shown that 65 and 183 items were introduced by elementary and secondary school teachers respectively Our findings will be useful to many researchers who have concerned about the issus of misconceptions in biology as well as many biology teachers who have had difficulties in biology teaching due to students' preconceptions.
