  • A numerical computation of unsteady flow in the open channel was studied with the linearized four-point method of characteristics. A seiche test for this model was fulfilled and its result was very close to the exact solution. The effect of linearization to the accuracy of the result was small enough for the analysis of nearly horizontal flow, and this model would be applicable for the real unsteady flow problem because of its convenience.

  • The complex nature of low flow mixing in natural channels has been investigated using both laboratory experiments and the numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a set of mass balance equations describing the mixing and mass exchange mechanisms. Laboratory experiments, which involved collection of channel geometry, hydraulic, and dye dispersion test data, were conducted in a model of four pool and riffle sequences in a 49-m long tilting flume. The experimental results show that flow over the model pool-riffle sequences is highly non-uniform. Concentration-time curves are significantly skewed with long tails. Comparison between measured and predicted concentration-time curves shows good agreement in the general shape, peak concentration and time to peak. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional one-dimensional dispersion model in predicting natural mixing processes in open channels under low flow conditions through pools and riffles.

  • Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at circular manholes are usually not significant. However, the energy loss at manholes, often exceeding the friction loss of pipes under surcharge flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharge flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus with two circular manholes was installed for this study. The range of the experimental discharges were from $1.0\ell/sec$ to $4.4\ell/sec$. Head loss coefficient was maximum because of strong oscillation of water surface when the range of manhole depth ratios$(h_m/D_{in})$ were from 1,2 to 1.25. The average head loss coefficients for upstream manhole and downstream manhole were 0.58 and 0.23 respectively. Head loss at upstream manhole is nearly 2.5 times more than one at downstream manhole.

  • The friction factor equation of open channel flow is developed by using Prandtl's mixing length theory and considering the flow characteristics of smooth or rough turbulent flow. BYO model considers vertical velocity profile for the (:omputation of bottom friction of surface waves and current flow. The model computes the mean bottom friction of combined wave-current flow by the vectorial summation of wave velocity and current velocity at Bijker point. The near bottom flow is discriminated by three flow regimes; smooth, transitional and rough turbulent flow. The model, BYO, has been further refined considering the combination of smooth turbulent flow and rough turbulent flow.

  • In order to demonstrate the flow properties of the river bed and the design of hydraulic structures, the estimation of friction velocity is essentially required. However, existing friction velocity equations such as Log method and Power law have trouble to estimate the friction velocity because a boundary condition and various hydraulic properties are changed constantly in near the wall. In the present study, therefore, a new friction velocity equation that can minimize the parameters and reduce an error was suggested. To verify accuracy and reliability for the proposed equation, Clauser method, $\sqrt{gRI}$ method, reynolds stress method by Dr. Song were compared with the proposed method by estimated entropy parameter M for each channel. Consequently, the results show that uniform flow condition as well as non-uniform flow condition with highly accuracy nearly matched in case of accelerating non-uniform condition of $R^2=0.9621$, Decelerating Non Uniform condition of $R^2=0.9274$, Uniform condition of $R^2=0.8865$.

  • The friction velocity is a quantity with the dimensions of velocity defined by the friction stress and density of a wall surface at near wall of flow condition. Also, the friction velocity is the hydraulic parameter describing shear force at the bottom flow. Moreover, it is a very important factor in designing open channel and essential to determine the mixing coefficient in the main flow direction. The estimation of the friction velocity are such as methods using channel slope, linear law of the mean velocity at viscous sub-layer and direct measurement of wall shear stress, etc. In the present study, we propose a friction velocity equation that has been optimized by combining the concept of entropy, which is used in stochastic method, and to verify the proposed equation, the experimental data measured by Song was used. The R squared for friction velocities between proposed equation and friction velocity formula analyzed 0.999 to 1.000 in a very good agreement with each equation.

  • The Samcheonpo ocean small hydropower plant (SHP) has a special feature of using marginal hydraulic head of circulating water system of fossil fuel power plant as a power source and having the characteristics of general hydropower generation and tidal power generation as well. Also, it contributes to reducing green house gases and developing clean energy source by recycling circulating water energy otherwise dissipated into the ocean. The efficiency of small hydropower plant is directly affected by effective head and flow rate of discharged water. Therefore, the efficiency characteristics of ocean hydropower plant are analyzed with the variation of water level and flow rate of discharged water, which is based on the accumulated operation data of the Samcheonpo hydropower plant. After the start of small hydropower plant operation, definite rise of water level was observed. As a result of flow pattern change from free flow to submerged flow, the instability of water surface in overall open channel is increased but it doesn't reach the extent of overflowing channel or having an effect on circulation system. Performance evaluation result shows that the generating power and efficiency of small hydropower exceeds design requirements in all conditions. Analysis results of CWP's water flow rate verify that the amount of flowing water is measured less and the highest efficiency of small hydropower plant is achieved when the effective head has its maximum value. In conclusion, efficiency curve derived from water flow rate considering tidal level shows the best fitting result with design criteria curve and it is verified that overall efficiency of hydropower system is satisfactory.

  • The understanding and prediction of the behavior of flow in open channels are important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Recently, frequent drought has increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows for reserving instream flow. The objective of this study is to develop an efficient and accurate finite element model based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin(SU/PG) scheme for analyzing and predicting two dimensional flow features in complex natural rivers. Several tests were performed in developed all elements(4-Node, 6-Node, 8-Node elements) for the purpose of validation and verification of the developed model. The U-shaped channel of flow and natural river of flow were performed for tests. The results were compared with these of laboratory experiments and RMA-2 model. Such results showed that solutions of high order elements were better accurate and improved than those of linear elements. Also, the suggested model displayed reasonable velocity distribution compare to RMA-2 model in meandering domain for application of natural river flow. Accordingly, the developed finite element model is feasible and produces reliable results for simulation of two dimensional natural river flow. Also, One contribution of this study is to present that results can lead to significant gain in analyzing the accurate flow behavior associated with hydraulic structure such as weir and water intake station and flow of chute and pool.

  • It is necessary to perform the precise analysis of unsteady flow for effective design of the side-weir detention basin installed in the river. Generally, the HEC-RAS program, which is a 1D unsteady numerical model, is mostly used to simulate the unsteady flow for rivers. However, it is difficult to have confidence of unsteady flow results simulated by HEC-RAS due to the lack of experimental data and field monitoring data for the channel with a side-weir detention basin. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to validate or verify the simulation results calculated by HEC-RAS through the experiments for the open channel with a side-weir detention basin using specially-designed unsteady discharge-supply system. The experimental cases included unsteady flows in the straight channel with and without a side-weir detention basin. Especially, for the case with a detention basin, the experiment was performed to consider only the free flow condition over the side-weir. The study results showed that values of water level and discharge obtained from HEC-RAS coincided reasonably with experimental results with the maximum error of 3% for water level and 1% for discharge in the case of the flow without the side-weir detention basin and 4% for water level and 2% for discharge with the side-weir detention basin.
