  • Effective data management of underground facilities is very important in terms of human life. For this, input of up-to-date and high-accuracy data should be preceded. Therefore, it is important to have an efficient data input method. In this study, by developing a sewage facility site survey program using open source software, paper drawings could be replaced with tablet PCs. By using a tablet PC, figures and property information acquired from the field are transmitted in real time through a database server. PostGIS query is developed to automate structured editing to minimize manual work in constructing a GIS (Geographic Information System) database for sewage facilities. did. In addition, the database was built using the sewage facility GIS database building program. As a result of comparing and analyzing the existing sewage facility database construction, work process, and work time, the work process was simplified and work time was shortened. In addition, through simple customization of open source software, it will be able to be used for field surveys and database construction in other fields.

  • We present our experiences with open-source spatio-temporal database systems for managing and analyzing big astronomical data acquired by wide-field time-domain sky surveys. Considering performance, cost, difficulty, and scalability of the database systems, we conduct comparison studies of open-source spatio-temporal databases such as GeoMesa and PostGIS that are already being used for handling big geographical data. Our experiments include ingesting, indexing, and querying millions or billions of astronomical spatio-temporal data. We choose the public VVV (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea) catalogs of billions measurements for hundreds of millions objects as the test data. We discuss issues of how these spatio-temporal database systems can be adopted in the astronomy community.

  • When to build a Web and Cloud Computing environment, it is essential to used a database system. Database systems includes commercial programs, such as Oracle and MS-SQL, but also similar to the performance of commercial applications, there are many free programs. In particular, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB are no costs, but the source is open to the public can be applied to a variety of environments. This paper presents an open source relational database management system, the trends are examined.

  • With the development of the Internet and Information Communication Technology, there has been an increase in the amount of Open Source Intelligence(OSINT). OSINT can be highly effective, if well refined and utilized. Recently, it has been assumed that almost 95% of all information comes from public sources and the utilization of open sources has sharply increased. The ISVG and START programs, for example, collect information about open sources related to terrorism or crime, effectively used to detect terrorists and prevent crime. The open source information related to the cyber attacks is, however, quite different from that in terrorism (or crime) in that it is difficult to clearly identify the attacker, the purpose of attack, and the range of damage. In addition, the data itself of cyber attacks is relatively unstructured. So, a totally new approach is required to establish and utilize an OSINT database for cyber attacks, which is proposed in this paper.

  • We present our experiences with open-source NoSQL database systems in analyzing spatial and temporal astronomical data. We conduct experiments of using Redis in-memory NoSQL database system by modifying and exploiting its support of geohash for astronmical spatial data. Our experiment focuses on performance, cost, difficulty, and scalability of the database system. We also test OpenTSDB as a possible NoSQL database system to process astronomical time-series data. Our experiments include ingesting, indexing, and querying millions or billions of astronomical time-series measurements. We choose our KMTNet data and the public VVV (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea) catalogs as test data. We discuss issues in using these NoSQL database systems in astronomy.

  • The purpose of this study is to design simple BIM query language for visualizing BIM information as the viewpoint of use-cases by using open source viewer cost-effectively. recently, the studies related to the facility management using BIM are being researched world-widely. In this studies, it's important to develop the BIM query to obtain the needed data from BIM database. To implement it, the trends in related studies were reviewed and the open source-based BIM viewer architecture was analyzed. And then the architecture considering the simple BIM Query Language (sBQL) was designed to represent the geometry and property of the BIM database. Lastly, the system by using the proposed sBQL grammar was developed.

  • In recent, interests regarding open source software for geo-spatial processing are increasing. Open source remote sensing (OSRS) is regarded as one of the progressing and advanced fields in remote sensing. Nevertheless, analyses or application cases regarding OSRS are not enough for general uses or references. In this study, three kinds of OSRS software in consideration of international popularity, types of functionalities, and development environments are taken into account: OSSIM, Opticks, and ORFEO Toolbox (OTB). First, functional comparison with respect to these is carried out on the level of the preliminary survey. According to this investigation, OTB is chosen as the most applicable OSRS software in this study. Running on OTB, NIX format importing module and database connecting module are implemented for widely general uses and further application. As for an example case, airborne image of NIX format is used to region growing segmentation algorithm in OTB, and then the results are stored and retrieved in PostGIS database to test implemented modules. Conclusively, local customization and algorithm development using OSRS software are necessary to build on-demand applications from the developers' viewpoint.

  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a software that manages and automate the internal processes of an organization. Process speed and quality can be increased, and cost reduced by process automation. Odoo is an open source ERP platform including more than 15000 apps. ERP systems such as Odoo are all-in-one management systems. Odoo can be suitable for small and medium organizations, but duo to efficiency limitations, Odoo is not suitable for the large ones. Furthermore, Odoo can be implemented on both local or public servers in which each has some advantages and disadvantages such as; the speed of internet, synced data or anywhere access. In many cases, there is a persistent need to have more than one synchronized Odoo instance in several physical places. We modified Odoo to support this kind of requirements and improve its efficiency by replacing its standard database with a distributed one, namely CockroachDB.

  • As the use of open source databases grows, so does need to evaluate, the performance of search queries for these databases. This paper compares the search query performance of SQL-based open source databases with commercial databases through experiments. The targets are MySql, MariaDB, and MS-SQL Server. In this study, the execution time of various types of search queries are measured. Also, search query performance was experimented according to change of index and number of tuples. Experimental results show that SQL-based open source databases have the potential to replace commercial databases when indexes are used and the number of tuples is not very large.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance quality of the open source DBMSs. Performance quality is defined as processing time for Join queries. Query processing time is measured and compared in the most widely used open source DBMSs and commercial DBMS. Methods: By varying the number of tuples of two relations to be joined, the average processing time(seconds) of a Join query in each DBMS was obtained experimentally. ANOVA and Tukey HSD test were used in order to compare the performance quality of DBMSs. Results: There was a significant difference between the performance qualities of the three DBMSs at all experimental levels where the number of tuples was 100, 1,000, 2,000, 10,000, and 50,000. As a result of the Tukey HSD test, two open source DBMSs (MariaDB, MySQL) were classified in the same group only at the tuple level of 100. The commercial DBMS (MS-SQL Server) belonged to another group. At level of more than 1,000 tuples, all three DBMSs belonged to different groups. Conclusion: Within the open source DBMS group, MariaDB showed the better performance quality except for a small number of tuples. Thus the results show that MariaDB can be the alternative to MySQL which is currently most widely used. Between open source DBMS and commercial DBMS groups, MS-SQL Server always shows the best performance quality, but the less number of tuples, the less the difference.
