  • This paper describes results of experimental and numerical analyses, in order to analyze a reinforcement effect of concrete mat on open cut restoration of underground cavity. The plate loading tests were conducted to evaluate a reinforcement effect of concrete mat, at reinforcement depths from the ground surface of 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm. The result showed that the reduction ratio of stress (earth pressure) was about 60% at all reinforcement depth. The reinforcement effect considering ground surface settlement and reduction ratio of stress based on laboratory tests and numerical analysis was significant, at reinforcement depths from the ground surface of 10 cm~20 cm. LFWD test results showed that subgrade modulus was the largest when concrete mat was installed 20 cm below ground surface. Therefore, it is effective to reinforce concrete mat within 20 cm from the surface, when the underground cavity due to damage of underground utilities was formed in the height direction to the bottom of the pavement layer.

  • This paper presents the development of a squeeze film damper (SFD) test rig and experimental identification of the effects of clearance, damper length, journal eccentricity ratio, excitation amplitude, oil supply pressure, and oil flow rate on the damping coefficients of a test SFD with open ends and a central groove. Test data are compared with predictions from a simple model developed for short SFDs with open ends and a central groove. The test results show a significant decrease in the damping coefficient with increasing clearance and a dramatic increase with damper length, which are in good agreement with the simple model predictions. According to the simple model, the damping coefficient is inversely proportional to the cube of the clearance and directly proportional to the cube of the length. An increase in the journal eccentricity ratio results in a dramatic increase in the damping coefficient by as much as 15 times that of the concentric case, particularly at low excitation frequencies. By contrast, the measured damping coefficient remains almost constant with changes in the excitation amplitude and supply pressure, which are not major factors in the damper design. In general, the test data agree well with the simple model predictions, excluding cases that show increases in the SFD length and journal eccentricity, which indicate significant dependency on the excitation frequency.

  • Purpose: The study aimed to investigate real-world surgical outcomes of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for advanced gastric cancer using Korean Gastric Cancer Association (KGCA)-led nationwide data. Materials and Methods: A nationwide survey of patients who underwent surgical treatment for gastric cancer in 2019 was conducted by the KGCA. A total of 14,076 patients from 68 institutions underwent surgery, and 4,953 patients diagnosed with pathological stages IB-III gastric cancer were included. Among them, 1,689 patients who underwent MIS (MIS group) and 1,689 who underwent the open approach (open group) were matched using propensity score in a 1:1 ratio. Surgical outcomes were compared, and multivariate analysis was performed to identify the independent factors for overall morbidity. Results: The MIS group had a lower proportion of D2 lymphadenectomy, total omentectomy, and combined resection. However, the number of harvested lymph nodes was higher in the MIS group. Better surgical outcomes, including less blood loss and shorter hospital stay, were observed in the MIS group, and the overall morbidity rate was significantly lower in the MIS group (17.5% vs. 21.9%, P=0.001). The mortality rates did not differ significantly between the 2 groups. In the multivariate analysis, the minimally invasive approach was a significant protective factor against overall morbidity (odds ratio, 0.799; P=0.006). Conclusions: Based on the Korean nationwide data, MIS for stage IB-III gastric cancer had better short-term outcomes than the open approach, including lower rates of wound complications, intra-abdominal abscesses, and cardiac problems.

  • Since 1995 the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology has introduced and implemented a project based system (PBS) for awarding R&D funds. While capital investments for national laboratories such as buildings and research facilities are supported by the government, normal operating expenses including personnel expenses should be earned by national laboratories through open competition under PBS. The project budget includes both direct research costs and indirect costs. The purpose of this paper is to examine the components of indirect costs and to examine determinants of indirect costs of national laboratories in Korea. The indirect costs of nineteen national laboratories are examined. The direct personnel costs and indirect personnel costs out of total personnel costs are 72% and 28%, respectively. The average indirect cost rate is 74.1% of direct personnel costs. Major components of indirect costs are general operating costs, indirect personnel costs, taxes and dues, and expenses related to the usage of equipment. The significant determinants of indirect cost are indirect personnel ratio. the ratio of unique projects, the type of national laboratories (pure research laboratories or other), and asset activity ratio measured as research divided by total assets. The high indirect personnel ratio, the high ratio of unique projects, the laboratories classified as other, the low asset activity ratio are related to high indirect cost rates.

  • Chip on glass (COG) bonding using anisotropic conductive film (ACF) is a key technology to assemble a driver IC onto a LCD glass panel. In this paper, an experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the correlation between contact resistance and characteristics of image taken by machine vision based inspection system. The results show that the contact resistance was strongly influenced by the contrast ratio of conductive particle rather than the number of conductive particles. Also, number of conductive particles whose contrast ratio is below 0.75 is crucial for determining the quality of the assembled samples. On the other hand, in the result of high temperature high humidity storage test, the contrast ratio of samples was increased. However, in the case of open-circuit samples after temperature humidity storage test, the number of conductive particles whose contrast ratio is above 0.75 was more than that of the closed-circuit samples.

  • The numerical simulations for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) of the cylinders with different combinations of mass ratio and frequency ratio were performed under the Reynolds (Re) number ranges of 1450-10200, 5800-40800 and 13050-91800 by using the embedded programs in OpenFoam. By combining with the modified SST k-ω turbulence model, the coupled Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations and double-degree-of-freedom vibration equations were solved. After analyzing the results, it is found that the some characteristics of the VIV have changed with the increase of the range of Re number, and the effects of Re number on vibration characteristics are also different under different combinations of mass ratio and frequency ratio. On this basis, the influence law of Re number on the characteristics of VIV of the cylinders is summarized, which can provide a reference for the research of VIV under higher Re number.

  • This purpose of this study is to investigate the association among mutual funds (MFs) risk measures and return parameters, evaluate mutual fund performance and also explore the best appropriate mutual fund performance measure for investment in Pakistan. Therefore, thirty-five mutual funds have been selected for the period 2007-2015. The Sharpe, Treynor, Jensen Alpha, Information ratio and Fama's Net Selectivity measures has been used to analyze MF performance. Our study findings show significant positive relation exist between Sharpe and Jenson alpha & information ratio (IR); Treynor ratio is negatively correlated to Jenson alpha and Jenson alpha is positively allied with IR. Moreover, association among performance measures, Fama's net selectivity is a major driver in leading to other measures but Sharpe and IR lead to Treynor ratio as well. Furthermore, performance measures are ranked in accordance standard deviation with the arrangement of Fama's net selectivity at top, Jenson Alpha at second, Sharpe ratio at third, IR at fourth and Treynor ratio at fifth position according to risk parameters in Pakistan. Overall, Jensen Alpha measure appears to be the best suitable mutual fund performance measure in Pakistan due to its practical nature. Finally, the Pakistani stock market index KSE100 (as benchmark) performs better than MF industry of Pakistan.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although several recent studies have reported the anti-cancer effects of extracts or components of Citrus unshiu peel, which has been used for various purposes in traditional medicine, the molecular mechanisms for their effects remain unclear. In the present study, the anti-cancer activity of a water-soluble extract of C. unshiu peel (WECU) in MDA-MB-231 human breast carcinoma cells at the level of apoptosis induction was investigated. MATERIALS/METHODS: Cytotoxicity was evaluated using the MTT assay. Apoptosis was detected using DAPI staining and flow cytometry analyses. Mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, caspase activity and Western blotting were used to confirm the basis of apoptosis. RESULTS: The results indicated that WECU-induced apoptosis was related to the activation of caspase-8, and -9, representative initiator caspases of extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis pathways, respectively, and caspase-3 accompanied by proteolytic degradation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase and down-regulation of the inhibitors of apoptosis protein family members. WECU also increased the pro-apoptotic BAX to anti-apoptotic BCL-2 ratio, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and cytochrome c release from mitochondria to cytoplasm. Furthermore, WECU provoked the generation of ROS, but the reduction of cell viability and induction of apoptosis by WECU were prevented when ROS production was blocked by antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that WECU suppressed proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells by activating extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis pathways in a ROS-dependent manner.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the plugging effect on the capacity of open-ended piles installed in sandy soil. Full-scale tests, including dynamic and static axial-compression load tests, were carried out on three instrumented piles with different diameters (508.0, 711.2 and 914.4 mm). To measure the outer and inner shaft resistances acting on the piles, a double-walled system was utilized with instrumented strain gauges on the outside and inside walls of the pile. The results of field tests show that the inner shaft resistance was mostly mobilized at the location between the pile tip and 18-34% of the total plug length. It was found that the soil plugging in the lower portion has influence on the inner shaft resistance. In addition, it can be also demonstrated that the ratio of inner shaft resistance plus annulus load resistance to total resistance decreased with increasing pile diameters. The results of these tests show that the relationship between the degree of plugging and pile diameter is clearly established. Direct observations of the soil plugs were made and used to quantify both the plug length ratio (PLR) and the incremental filling ratio (IFR). Based on this result, it was found that the N value of the standard penetration test (SPT) is highly correlated with the IFR.

  • Cavitation refers to a phenomenon in which empty spaces occur in a fluid due to changes in pressure and a velocity. When a liquid moves at a high speed, the pressure drops below the vapor pressure, and vapor bubbles are generated in the liquid. This study used CFD to analyze the flow of fluid machinery used in marine and offshore plants. The goals are to ensure the validity of the analysis method for marine propellers in an open water test, to increase the forward ratio, and to use FLUENT to understand the flow pattern due to cavitation. A three-dimensional analysis was performed and compared with experimental data from MOERI. The efficiency was highest at advance ratios of 0.7 - 0.8. Thrust was generated due to the difference between the pressure surface and the suction surface, and it was estimated that bubbles would be generated in the vicinity of the back side surface rather than the face side of the propeller, resulting in more cavitation. The cavitation decreased sharply as the advance ratio increased. The thrust and torque coefficients were comparable to those of the MOERI experimental data except at the advance ratio of 1, which showed a difference of less than 5%. Therefore, it was confirmed that CFD can evaluate an open water propeller test.
