Since the early 1970s online searching has provided end-users with commercial and governmental bibliographic databases by trained intermediaries through the developed Vendor/Agency Systems. Recently, the situation has begun to change. The era of end-user searching is coming. End Users are the “information consumers” as the final user of an IT product or set of information. This study on end-user online searching is presented with the following aspects: development, characterization, training, end user online search services in university libraries, role of the intermediaries and librarians, the future.

Performing an online health search is a popular activity conducted on the Internet. Research studies from developed countries provide information on source used, type of search performed and devices used to perform the search. However, the same cannot be said about the online health information searching scene in South East Asia. Online health information searching is gaining popularity in South East Asia. Citizens in these countries are turning to the Internet to obtain health information quickly. Current research studies pertaining to online health information searching in South East Asian is limited, particularly relating to search experiences of South East Asian health searchers. Search experience is pertinent as it could deter or encourage the possibility of conducting future health searches. In this research study, a user study was conducted to describe the online search experience of South East Asian health searchers. A face to face interview with 50 participants was conducted. The interview was audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Results indicate participants have positive and negative search experiences. In some cases, post search outcomes influenced the search experience. Results of this research study contribute to the growing domain of knowledge in relation to online health information searching. Results of this study also provide an understanding pertaining to the search experience of South East Asian online health searchers.

The aim of this study is to examine the user's online searching behavior in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems. The study is purely based on survey methods and tries to analyse the online searching behavior of respondents of social science disciplines who were doing research in three target central universities of Delhi (i.e. DU, JMI, and JNU). For measuring the responses of the respondents in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems, a total of 396 questionnaires were distributed among the students and out of all, 305 responses were used for the study. The findings of the study reveal that most of the students were not using all the facilities offered in IR interfaces of e-journal database systems for their retrieval process and also encourages menu based searches rather than command based searching.

To investigate how the online searching was taught in the departments of Library and Information Science, a survey was done to the professors teaching information retrieval course. Questionnaires were mailed to 32 professors and 26 returned. Information retrieval course, one of the central course attended by almost all of the students, covers online searching in depth. Lecture, hard-on practice, and homework were three favored methods of teaching. Among the 22 topics to be covered in online teaching, respondents showed substantially higher consensus except for sections of information technology and service management. However, respondents showed big differences in hours of hand-on practice and the systems used. Free databases through Internet used dominantly. The chronic problem of terminal and communication is solved by using campus-wide facilities. But the problem of teaching assistance is serious. Based on the results, recommendations to improve online searching education are provided.

Consumers' perception of risk plays a major role in how they make online purchase decisions. Since online shopping is perceived to be riskier than in-store shopping, consumers engage in a variety of risk reduction strategies such as searching online for alternative products and alternative e-tailers. This study examines the influence of risk involvement on risk reduction strategies and customer satisfaction. It discusses three aspects of risk reduction strategies: time spent in making a purchasing decision, searching for alternative e-tailers, and searching for alternative products. Data from 294 female shoppers who had experience in purchasing fashion products online was analyzed. This study found that risk involvement had a positive influence on the time spent in making decisions, while the influence of risk involvement on searching for alternative retailers and alternative products was not significant. However, consumer satisfaction was negatively related to search for alternative retailers and positively related to risk involvement. This study provides a better understanding of customers' risk involvement and risk reduction strategies in online shopping. This information would be beneficial for marketers and retailers to reduce customer perception of risks and to promote online sales.

최근 온라인 상품검색기능을 제공하는 여러 사이트에서는 단순하게 특정상품을 검색하거나 신제품에 대한 소개 및 검색 기능뿐만 아니라 가격별 정렬, 제조사별 정렬, 출시일별 정렬 기능을 통해 상품을 판매하는 인터넷 쇼핑몰 사이트로의 연결기능과 함께 상품에 대한 주요 기능설명과 이용자들의 구매후기 등과 같은 다양한 서비스를 제공하고 있어, 온라인 쇼핑을 즐기는 소비자들에게 구매를 위한 준거점으로서 양질의 정보를 제공하고 있다. 본 연구는 온라인 상품 검색사이트에서 제공하는 이용후기의 역할을 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 온라인 상품검색사이트의 이용후기 특성으로 정보제공성과 유용성을 각각 설정하고, 온라인 상품검색사이트의 친숙성과 함께 사이트 신뢰, 만족, 충성도에 미치는 영향력 과정을 확인하기 위해 8개의 연구가설을 설정하였으며, 175명으로부터 자료를 수집, 이를 구조방정식 모형을 이용하여 검증하였다. 그 결과 친숙성과 이용후기의 정보제공성, 유용성 등이 사이트 신뢰, 만족을 경유하여 충성도에 유의적인 영향력을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 온라인 상품검색사이트 이용자의 충성도를 높이기 위해서는 사이트 친숙성을 높이는 전략, 제공되는 이용후기의 정보제공성을 높이고 유용성을 높이기 위한 운영전략의 마련이 필요하다 하겠다. 본 연구의 이러한 결과들이 향후 온라인 상품검색사이트를 운영하는 기업에게 많은 도움이 되었으면 한다.

정보검색의 성공여부는 적절한 검색어의 선정에 달려있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 특히 CD-ROM이나 온라인목록시스템에서 주제검색시 분류표, 주제명과 같은 통제어와 자연어 등 비통제어의 비교 우위 문제는 아직도 논란이 되고 있다. 본고는 두 시스템의 검색효율성을 비교하기 위하여 특히 다언어 환경하에서의 검색어 사용에 중점을 두고 다양한 형태의 검색어휘를 조사 분석하였다.

This study aims at defining the concept of OPAC, tracing of research trends and development of it, and clarifying various methods of subject access and patterns of bibliographic searching in OPAC as well as strategies for improving to implement online catalogs. Although OPAC is so far the most user-friendly bibliographic searching method, there are still a lot of issues including online subject access in particular. Therefore a more effective and useful method for computer end-users have to be developed, for instance, improvement of an indexing system, a n.0, pplication of the classification system as a searching tool, a new design and construction of standardized thesaurus, betterment of user interface, introducing of expert system into bibliographic searching, establishment of subject authority file. Those would raise the success-rate of users seeking bibliographic information in the library catalogs. Korean libraries are in very early stage of OPAC implementation so that every efforts and concerns to improve strategies and techniques for subject access to OPAC have been strongly asked.

탐색자에 따라 탐색결과에 상당한 개인차가 들어 남에 따라 탐색에 영향을 미치는 탐색자의 개인적 특성에 관한 관심이 고조되고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문은 탐색에 영향을 미치는 탐색자 변인으로 상정되는 탐색훈련, 경험, 주제지식, 지적 능력, 인지양식, 태도, 탐색스타일 등에 관해 수행된 연구를 중심으로 문헌연구를 수행하여 탐색성과에 영향을 주는 탐색자 관련 변인을 파악하고자 한다. 놀랍게도 탐색훈련이나 탐색경첩은 탐색성과에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 주제지식이 있는 탐색의 경우와 주제지식이 없는 탐색의 경우, 경험자와 미경험자의 탐색행태에 있어서는 차이가 발견되었다. 탐색자의 지적 능력이 탐색결과에 미치는 영향은 미미한 것으로 나타났다. 인지양식의 경우 장의존/장독립 인지양식만이 탐색결과의 차이에 대해 설명을 하고 있다. 탐색자의 탐색에 대한 태도는 다양한 것으로 나타났으며 탐색에 대한 태도는 탐색행동에 반영되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 탐색자들의 탐색스타일 또한 다양한 것으로 나타났으며 탐색스타일에 따른 탐색성과와의 관계를 조사한 연구는 아직까지 발견되지 않고 있다. 탐색자의 개인적 특성에 따라 탐색행동이나 탐색결과에 상당한 개인차가 존재하지만 이 차이가 유의미하기에는 연구논문들의 검증력이 약한 것으로 나타났다.
