  • This study is to improve the quality of online reference service which is serviced in the world. For this it suggests the strategic methods for collecting and connecting of internet information resources. It makes information service circumstance for professional librarians to retrieve and service. To achieve the purpose, this study have drawn implications by analysing the theoretical discussions and the cases of online reference resources system. This study suggests some strategies as follows; 1) Collaborative constructing and using of online reference resources, 2) Developing classification scheme and subdividing the subjects of it, 3) Developing the standard format of the data as like metadata, 4) Developing the guidelines to select the proper resources from many internet information resources, 5) Subdividing the 'knowledge DB' by subjects, 6) Connecting as much as possible the DBs as like the National DB and open access resources.

  • This study aimed to suggest metadata elements for online reference resource systems based on users' perceptions. We surveyed librarians in four types of libraries, asking them indicate the need for each of 17 metadata elements. The survey results were compared to the current data input rates of the system, which has been operating for the past two years. Based on both the respondent data and current data input rates, we suggested that title, description, subject, creator, type, identifier, language, coverage, location, and tag elements must be included in the system as the metadata elements for online reference resources. n addition, the input rates of creator and copyright were 20.20% and 18.30%, respectively, but the respondents answered that these items were needed 82.15% and 82.77%, respectively. Therefore, these two items are necessary as metadata elements. On the other hand, the data input rates of type, source, date, relation, and contribution were less than 3%, but almost 70% of respondents answered that all these items were needed. So further research should be performed to determine whether or not these items are needed for online reference resource systems.

  • The purpose of the present study is to verify the two hypotheses: (1) Online services are fundamentally automated versions of the reference services. Accordingly there will be a major impact on reference services when Online service is introduced into the traditional library environment. The chief impact will be that the use of data bases retrieval service supplements and improves the traditional reference service when Online service is coordinated with the traditional reference service. and is fully incorporated into the existing user service areas. (2) The availability of data bases retrieval service will make it possible for the first time for the reference services to offer substantial search services of any kind resources limited to the printed sources. In light of such circumstances, libraries would provide better service to their users and greatly increase the productivity of reference librarians. There will be also the recognition that a result of an improved professional image for reference librarians and the library heightens user interest. This change may be translated into increased usage of library services generally. To achieve the purpose, 4 Research Libraries adopted Online retrieval from DIALOG's data bases-searching and reference services available in-house were chosen.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze related studies and domestic/international online reference cases, extract obstructive factors present in online reference services, and reveal whether or not there are differences in perception between the university librarian and the users. The results with respect to the failure of the resources revealed that while the user considers the quantitative / qualitative shortage of content as the greatest obstacle in the online reference service, librarians see the lack of human resources (Specialist Librarian / trained staff) in this light. Users think this is the least of the problems. In addition, other obstacles that are the most highly evaluated by librarians are, in order, the limitation of service because of copyright issues, the difficulty of information retrieval and complexity of methods of use, and a general lack of information in the reference services menu and missing information in the main menu. For the users the other most important obstacles were similar with the limitation of service because of copyright issues being highest, followed by the difficulty of access because of the confusion over service names, and the general lack of information in the reference services menu and missing information in the main menu.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and evaluate discovery layer search tools for retrieval of legal information in Indian law libraries. This paper covers current practices in legal information retrieval with special reference to Indian academic law libraries, and analyses its importance in the domain of law.Design/Methodology/Approach. A web survey and observational study method are used to collect the data. Data related to the discovery tools were collected using email and further discussion held with the discovery layer/ tool /product developers and their representatives.Findings. Results show that most of the Indian law libraries are subscribing to bundles of legal information resources such as Hein Online, JSTOR, LexisNexis Academic, Manupatra, Westlaw India, SCC web, AIR Online (CDROM), and so on. International legal and academic resources are compatible with discovery tools because they support various standards related to online publishing and dissemination such as OAI/PMH, Open URL, MARC21, and Z39.50, but Indian legal resources such as Manupatra, Air, and SCC are not compatible with the discovery layers. The central index is one of the important components in a discovery search interface, and discovery layer services/tools could be useful for Indian law libraries also if they can include multiple legal and academic resources in their central index. But present practices and observations reveal that discovery layers are not providing facility to cover legal information resources. Therefore, in the present form, discovery tools are not very useful; they are an incomplete and half solution for Indian libraries because all available Indian legal resources available in the law libraries are not covered.Originality/Value. Very limited research or published literature is available in the area of discovery layers and their compatibility with legal information resources.

  • This study analyses the questions and answers contained in the Knowledge Information Database of the collaborative digital reference service, 'Ask a librarian'. And based on the results of status of user requests, this study draws information usage behavior in the early stages of the service was derived. 1,124 Knowledge Information Database items out of 3,506 cases was analyzed by nine criterion. ① Number of questions and whether to be reference questions, ② Subject and keywords of the question, ③ Purpose of the question, ④ Type of question, ⑤ User's information request, ⑥ Information source and reference services provided by the librarian, ⑦ Number of days to answer, ⑧ Level of the participating library, ⑨ Question type by topic. As a results of analysis, first, users asked for reference questions from various topics as needed, rather than one from a similar topic at a time, but more than half of the total pure reference questions were from the field of library information science. Second, about 71.35% of users were using the 'Ask a librarian' service to recommend a list of information resources related to a particular topic or research problem, and there were also questions that required consultation on the reading situation. Third, the most preferred sources of information for users were bibliography, and in the case of online information sources, users did not relatively prefer them. Fourth, the number of days required to answer was able to confirm significant differences depending on the type of question and the level of the participating library. Fifth, 31.33% of the purpose of the general field question showed that were self-generated.

  • Researchers commonly begin a project by studying past works in the area and deriving relevant information and ideas from their predecessors. In presenting their works researchers acknowledge their debts to preflecessors by carefully documenting each source to indicate what they borrowed. The obvious form of plagiarism is to cokx without crediting the sources. Students have to learn how to quote and how to make reference lists or works cited at the end of their reports which allow readers to locate and use the sources they used for their reports. Nowadays online information sources through the internet increase day by day, but there is no standard documentation style for citing these sources. In this paper up-to-date documentation styles recommened by APA(American Psychological Association) and MLA(Modern Language Association) are introduced. It was found that the graduate schools and the academic societies in Korea do not keep a certain documentation style consistently by checking the school catalogs and the policy statements on manuscript submisssion to the journals.

  • With the softness of online entertainment news articles and the increasing number of quick-reporting articles in the entertainment sector, many people have access to entertainment front-page articles and are now able to make reviews of celebrities. It is not easy to systematically analyze which news articles are about which celebrities in a real-time environment, although their reputation is a key factor in the entertainment agency's business strategy, which should make the most of its affiliated celebrity resources. Based on the amount of celebrity references mentioned in entertainment news data, this paper proposes an entertainment news keyword analysis system, which extracts celebrities that are the subject of the article and associates them with the celebrity entertainment agency in question. Through the system proposed in this paper, advertisers or entertainment agencies can judge the value of the celebrity as reference material for the business. In addition, it can lay the groundwork for an investment strategy by predicting the outlook for the entertainment company for brokerages and investors.
