One-way hash chains are important cryptographic primitives and have been used as building blocks of various cryptographic applications. Advantages of one-way hash chains are their simplicity and efficiency for generation based on low-powered processors with short time. However, a drawback of one-way hash chains is their difficulty of control to compute interval values of one-way hash chains. That is, when hash values in one-way hash chain are used as encryption keys, if one hash value is compromised, then the attacker can compute other encryption keys from the compromised hash value. Therefore, direct use of one-way hash chains as encryption keys is limited to many cryptographic applications, such as pay per view system and DRM system. In this paper, we propose a new concept which is called interval hash chain using a hash function. In particular, proposed hash chains are made for only computing interval hash values by using two different one-way hash chains. The proposed scheme can be applied to contents encryption scheme for grading and partially usable contents in DRM system.

An ad hoc network is a collection of mobile nodes without any Infrastructure. However, ad hoc networks are vulnerable to attacks such as routing disruption and resource consumption; thus, routing protocol security is needed This paper proposes a secure and efficient routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, where only one-way hash function are used to authenticate nodes in the ROUTE REQUEST, while additional public-key cryptography is used to guard against active attackers disguising a node in the ROUTE REPLY.

Cryptographic hash functions are also called one-way functions and they ensure the integrity of communication data and command by detecting or blocking forgery. Also hash functions can be used with other security protocols for signature, authentication, and key distribution. The SHA-1 was widely used until it was found to be cryptographically broken by Wang, et. al, 2005. For this reason, NIST launched the SHA-3 competition in November 2007 to develop new secure hash function by 2012. Many SHA-3 hash functions were proposed and currently in review process. To choose new SHA-3 hash function among the proposed hash functions, there have been many efforts to analyze the cryptographic secureness, hardware/software characteristics on each proposed one. However there are few research efforts on the SHA-3 from the point of power consumption, which is a crucial metric on hardware module. In this paper, we analyze the power consumption characteristics of the SHA-3 hash functions when they are made in the form of ASIC hardware module. Also we propose power efficient hardware architecture on Luffa, which is strong candidate as a new SHA-3 hash function. Our proposed low power architecture for Luffa achieves 10% less power consumption than previous Luffa hardware architecture.

Inter-vehicle communication is one of the most important parts in Intelligent Vehicle System. Through this communication, drivers can recognize what is happening out of their sights, such as the freezing condition of the street, traffic accidents, and so on. Each car in IVS gives various services to the drivers after analyzing those received information from cars or a base station. If the message is, however, exchanged from car to car directly, the computation cost which is needed for all the car to authenticate the transmitted message between nearby cars is tremendously high. Therefore, one can naturally think that the message communication between cars is performed with the help of the base station to reduce the computation cost. In this case where the base station collects all the information transmitted from cars and broadcasts them nearby, there should be an efficient way both for the base station to authenticate the car message within its communication range and for the car to authenticate the information received from the base station. In this paper, we present a two-way authentication protocol using a hash chain to efficiently exchange GPS information between a car and a base station. This information can be used to provide a driver with the navigation which displays all the moving cars around him in real time. When a car goes into an area of a base station, the car authenticates itself to the base station using its private key of PKI, sends a commitment of a hash chain, then starts to send a message with the hash value for authentication. The message includes GPS information, driver's status and so on. The base station also authenticates itself to the nearby cars using its private key, transmits the commitment of the hash chain, and sends all the messages gathered from cars with authentication information.
Generation methods of data cube have been studied for many years in data warehouse which supports decision making using stored data. There are two previous studies, one is multi-way array algorithm and the other is H-cubing algorithm which is based on the hyper-tree. The multi-way array algorithm stores all aggregation data in arrays, so if the base data is increased, the size of memory is also grow. The H-cubing algorithm which is based on the hyper-tree stores all tuples in one tree so the construction cost is increased. In this paper, we present an efficient data cube generation method based on hash table using weight mapping table and record hash table. Because the proposed method uses a hash table, the generation cost of data cube is decreased and the memory usage is also decreased. In the performance study, we shows that the proposed method provides faster search operation time and make data cube generation operate more efficiently.

Since nowadays mobile phone messages are flourishing, the application of electronic coupon (e-coupon) will become a trend for mobile users. E-coupon for mobile commerce can provide mobility for users and distribution flexibility for issuers. In this paper, we propose a mobile e-coupon system that just applies some simple cryptographic techniques, such as one-way hash function and XOR operation. In our system, the customer can control the number of issued e-coupons and the issuer can prevent them from double-redeeming. The customer does not need to perform any exponential computation in redeeming and transferring the coupons. Our scheme uses one-way hash chains for preventing from double-spending.

To operate safely VANET applications, authenticaton is necessary to identify val d participants and prevent malicious parties from modifying messages. This paper proposes an efficient authentication protocol for the vehicle registration in VANET environment. The topology of VANET changes rapidly due to high-speed movement of vehicles, thus it is need to reduce the computational burden of the authentication protocol. Therefore, this protocol uses only one-way hash functions and EOR operations to register vehicles.

In digital signature schemes derived from the zero-knowledge proof techniques, some authors often claims that the length of hash-values for their schemes could be as short as 64 or 72 bits for the security level of 2$^{-64}$ or 2$^{-72}$ . This letter shows that signature schemes with such short hash values cannot achieve the security levels as stated, due to the birthday attack by the signer.

The digital forensic analysis ensures the integrity of confiscated data by calculating hash values for seizure and search of digital evidence and receiving confirmation and signature from participants. However, evidence that is irrelevant to the alleged offense needs to be deleted even after seizure from the point of view of privacy. But the hash value is altered by deleting the irrelevant data from the image file, one will not be able to prove that the file is in the initial state when it was seized. Therefore, in this paper, a study was conducted to support the integrity of the digital evidence, even if some of the seized digital evidence was deleted or damaged during the seizure search. The hash value of each data is calculated and hash value of the combination of hash values are also calculated. Even if the unrelated evidence is deleted from the seized evidence regardless of file system such as FAT or NTFS, the suggested method presented a way to provide the integrity that proves there is no change in the evidence file.
With the development of sensing devices and wireless communication technologies, wireless sensor networks are composed of a large number of sensor nodes that are equipped with limited computing performance and restricted communication capabilities. Besides, the sensor nodes are deployed in hostile or unattended environments. Therefore, the wireless sensor networks are vulnerable to security. In particular, the fatal damage may be occurred when data are exposed in real world applications. Therefore, it is important for design requirements to be made so that wireless sensor networks provide the strong security. However, because the conventional security schemes in wired networks did not consider the limited performance of the sensor node, they are so hard to be applied to wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a secure multipath transmission scheme based on one-way hash functions in wireless sensor networks considering the limited performance of the wireless sensor nodes. The proposed scheme converts a sensor reading based on one of one-way hash functions MD5 in order to make it harder to be cracked and snooped. And then, our scheme splits the converted data and transfers the split data to the base station using multi-path routing. The experimental results show that our proposed scheme consumes the energy of just about 6% over the existing security scheme.
