Effects of a One-Way Clutch on the Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior of Spur Gear Pairs under Periodic Excitation

  • Nonlinear behavior analysis was used to verify whether a one-way clutch is effective for reducing the torsional vibration of a paired spur gear system under periodic excitation. The dynamic responses were studied over a wide frequency range by speed sweeping to check the nonlinear behavior using numerical integration. The gear system with a one-way clutch showed typical nonlinear behavior. The oscillating component of the dynamic transmission error was reduced over the entire frequency range compared to a system without a one-way clutch. The one-way clutch also eliminated unsteady continuous jump phenomena over multiple solution bands, and prevented double-side contact, even with very small backlash. Installing a one-way clutch on both sides of the gear system was more effective at mitigating the negative effects of external periodic excitation and various parameter changes than a conventional gear system without a one-way clutch.

  • Using a one-way clutch has been reported to be very effective in reducing the vibration of gear pairs. However, study on the effect of using a one-way clutch has been based on numerical analysis only, and no experimental study has yet been executed. Hence, in this study, experiments to verify the effectiveness of using a one-way clutch to reduce the torsional vibration have been executed. Dynamic responses over a wide range of speeds have been compared for various numbers and positions of the clutch. The results of the experiments verified that a one-way clutch is effective in reducing the vibration by decreasing the tooth mesh vibration as well as the vibration transmitted from the input shaft.

  • A retractor is the major component of a seatbelt system that restraints passengers by locking the movement of webbing. Recently, in order to increase the effectiveness of seatbelt systems, motorized retractors that remove slack and correct passenger posture just before airbag expansion when collision is predicted are widely used. Key component of motorized retractors is the one-way clutch that engages and disengages the winding action of webbing according to the direction of motor revolution. Analytical investigation of action of the one-way clutch mechanism has been carried out to figure out conditions for one-way locking, and to study the effect of various kinematic and dynamic design variables of one-way clutch. Using combination of ADAMS and LifeMOD soft-wares, dynamic simulation of operation of motorized retractors including Hybrid-III dummy model has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the motorized retractors in various crash scenarios.

Research for Stepping Motor Using Piezoelectric Torsional Actuator (압전회전작동기를 이용한 스텝모터에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a new type of pi+ezoelectric stepping motor is designed, manufactured and tested. This motor is composed of piezoelectric torsional actuator and a pair of one-way clutch bearings. The torsional actuator consists of 16-polygonal tube of piezoceramic that can produce an angular displacement associated with shear mode. One-way clutch bearing converts oscillation of torsional actuator into a continuous stepping rotation. The proposed stepping motor does not require any conversion mechanism for stepping motion like any other motors. In the design process, the shear resonance mode of piezoelectric actuator is analyzed by using a commercial finite element analysis program, and the performance of the fabricated torsional actuator is measured. $0.124^{\circ}$ of maximum angular displacement is measured in square wave excitation on the actuator only. The stepping motor is manufactured by assembling a pair of one-way clutch bearings and the torsional actuator. The maximum rotation speed of 72rpm and the blocking torque of 3.136 mNm are measured at 3540 Hz and 100V/mm. Once the proposed piezoelectric stepping motor is miniaturized, it can be used for many compact and precise moving applications.

  • Motorized retractors enhance the safety of passengers by removing the slack of webbing and by holding upright driving position. Reliability of a driving mechanism that includes one-way clutch between the driving motor and webbing is directly linked to the safety of passenger. In this research, conditions for locking one-way clutch, and also conditions for sustaining locking are theoretically investigated. The operation of a motorized retractor under realistic conditions is simulated in order to validate the proposed retractor design.

  • In this research, a hot and cold combined forging process for manufacturing net-shape one-way clutch bearing outer race of an automobile automatic transmission unit is developed. The process is composed of hot forging for manufacturing an optimized gear-like perform and precision cold forging for sizing the perform into final net-shape product. Finite element simulation techniques are applied to find the optimized process designs including blank and die shapes. The predictions and experiments are compared, revealing that they are in good agreement with each other. The dimensional test showed that the important dimensional requirements on gear tooth-like shape of the forged product were fulfilled.

  • This paper describes the tribological effects on the nonlinear behavior of a spur gear pair with one-way clutch according to the direct contact elastic deformation model over a wide range of speeds, considering the hydrodynamic effects. The effects of various lubrication parameters, such as viscosity, film width, and friction, on the nonlinear dynamic behavior were analyzed. Forces due to the entraining velocity and the hydrodynamic friction were about two orders smaller than normal forces over the whole speed range. While the viscosity has a strong effect on the behavior of gear pair systems, friction has very little effect on torsional behavior. The inclusion of the hydrodynamic effect facilitates nonlinearity by increasing the overlap and damping, as well as decreasing elastic deformation and tooth reaction forces.

  • In this paper, A new type of piezoelectric step motor using piezoelectric torsional actuator and a pair of one-way clutch bearing is designed, manufactured and tested. The torsional actuator consists of 16-polygonal tube that can produce angular displacement using shear mode of piezoceramic. One-way clutch bearing convert oscillation of torsional actuator into continuous rotation. After performance testing of torsional actuator, the optimum condition for driving motor is investigated in terms of wave shape, excitation frequency and electrical field. The performance of the motor is experimentally evaluated. As a result, square wave has larger rotation speed than sin wave, and the maximum rotation speed of 57 rpm is measured at 3850 Hz and 100V/mm.
