  • In the existing reports regarding free transverse vibrations of the Euler-Bernoulli beams, most of them studied a uniform beam carrying various concentrated elements (such as point masses, rotary inertias, linear springs, rotational springs, spring-mass systems, ${\ldots}$, etc.) or a stepped beam with one to three step changes in cross-sections but without any attachments. The purpose of this paper is to utilize the numerical assembly method (NAM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of the multiple-step Euler-Bernoulli beams carrying a number of lumped masses and rotary inertias. First, the coefficient matrices for an intermediate lumped mass (and rotary inertia), left-end support and right-end support of a multiple-step beam are derived. Next, the overall coefficient matrix for the whole vibrating system is obtained using the numerical assembly technique of the conventional finite element method (FEM). Finally, the exact natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes of the vibrating system are determined by equating the determinant of the last overall coefficient matrix to zero and substituting the corresponding values of integration constants into the associated eigenfunctions, respectively. The effects of distribution of lumped masses and rotary inertias on the dynamic characteristics of the multiple-step beam are also studied.

  • We present a one-dimensional annular plate element with which the in-plane vibration of full disks can be analyzed efficiently and accurately by using the FEM. Its elementary mass matrix and stiffness matrix are derived, respectively, from the virtual work by effective forces and the virtual strain energy. The static deformation modes obtained from an integration of the differential equilibrium equations of the annular plate are used as interpolation functions of the one-dimensional annular plate element. The in-plane natural vibration characteristics of a 2-step full disk and a uniform full disk are analysed. Its results are compared with the results obtained by utilizing two-dimensional 8-node quadrilateral plane elements and cyclic symmetry of the disk. And also, by comparing with the theoretical results of previous researchers, the efficiency and accuracy of the presented element are verified.

  • In this study, the free vibrations of the cantilever plate, which is one of the most frequently used elements in various machine structures, are analyzed and further the results are utilized to develop the methodology to predict and control the natural frequencies for designing stabilized systems. The proposed method has three major steps. The first step is the frequency response test to investigate the natural frequencies of some plates, then the database is constituted from experiments and the FEM, and finally the natural frequencies are predicted using the database to be cross-checked by the identification test. The result of this study will help design many different stable structures without any complicated calculations.

  • A new seamless multiscale simulation was developed for coupling the continuum model with its molecular dynamics. Kriging-based Finite Element Method (K-FEM) is employed to model the continuum base of the entire domain, while the molecular dynamics (MD) is confined in a localized domain of interest. In the coupling zone, where the MD domain overlaps the continuum model, the overall Hamiltonian is postulated by contributions from the continuum and the molecular overlays, based on a quartic spline scaling parameter. The displacement compatibility in this coupling zone is then enforced by the Lagrange multiplier technique. A multiple-time-step velocity Verlet algorithm is adopted for its time integration. The validation of the present method is reported through numerical tests of one dimensional atomic lattice. The results reveal that at the continuum/MD interface, the commonly reported spurious waves in the literature are effectively eliminated in this study. In addition, the smoothness of the transition from MD to the continuum can be significantly improved by either increasing the size of the coupling zone or expanding the nodal domain of influence associated with K-FEM.

  • Metallic bipolar plate for molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of the shielded slot plate and the center plate. Among these, the center plate plays an important role in gas sealing. Therefore, manufacturing of the center plate is considered one of the key issues in MCFC. The center plate is manufactured by bending process. In bending process, springback and recoiling are two main problems. By using the modified punch shape with 'step', springback and recoil are reduced. The aim of this article is to find the effect of modified punch shape. So, the bending stress along thickness direction and material direction were investigated using FEM.

  • The beam structure with breathing cracks subjected to harmonic excitations was modeled by FEM based on Euler-Bernoulli theory, and a piecewise dynamical system was deduced. The precise integration method (PIM) was employed to propose an algorithm for analyzing the dynamic responses of the deduced system. This system was first divided into linear sub-systems, between which there are switching points resulted from the breathing cracks. The inhomogeneous terms due to the external excitations were tackled by introducing auxiliary variables to express the harmonic functions, hence the sub-systems are homogeneous. The PIM was then applied to solve the homogeneous sub-systems one by one. During the procedures, a predictor-corrector algorithm was presented to determine the switching points accurately. The presented method can provide solutions with an accuracy to a magnitude of $10^{-12}$ compared with exact solutions obtained by the theories of ordinary differential equations. The PIM results are much more accurate than Newmark ones with the same time step. Moreover, it is found that the PIM can maintain a high level of accuracy even when the time step increases within a relatively wide range.

  • One of the efficient and useful tools to achieve the optimal design of structures is employing the sensitivity analysis in the finite element model. In the numerical optimization process, often the semi-analytical method is used for estimation of derivatives of the objective function with respect to design variables. Numerical methods for calculation of sensitivities are susceptible to the step size in design parameters perturbation and this is one of the great disadvantages of these methods. This article uses complex variables method to calculate the sensitivity analysis and combine it with discrete sensitivity analysis. Finally, it provides a new method to obtain the sensitivity analysis for linear structures. The use of complex variables method for sensitivity analysis has several advantages compared to other numerical methods. Implementing the finite element to calculate first derivatives of sensitivity using this method has no complexity and only requires the change in finite element meshing in the imaginary axis. This means that the real value of coordinates does not change. Second, this method has the lower dependency on the step size. In this research, the process of sensitivity analysis calculation using a finite element model based on complex variables is explained for linear problems, and some examples that have known analytical solution are solved. Results obtained by using the presented method in comparison with exact solution and also finite difference method indicate the excellent efficiency of the proposed method, and it can predict the sustainable and accurate results with the several different step sizes, despite low dependence on step size.

  • Tube Process(TP) is one of the processes to produce permanent magnets. Advantage claimed for this process is that it can accmplish both densification and anisotropication in one step forming. This process is distinguished from other processes since it uses deformable tube for densification of powder magnets. TP has, however, difficulties in manufacturing permanent magnets from Nd-Fe-B green powder due to folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding, lead magnets into almost desired final shape and get uniform densification. In this paper, preform design for TP is carried out without a deformable tube to investigate the behaviour of magnet sinter-forging. Preform design is accomplished to increase the effective magnet area with a near net shape and uniform densification.

  • This paper present a new sort of multilayer piezoelectric ceramic transformer for the application to AC-adapters. This piezoelectric transformers operate in the second and third length extensional vibration mode. And the output performance of two types of piezoelectric transformers are compared by ANSYS, which is one of the FEM analysis program. As a result the minimum displacement was occurred at the two points in second length extensional vibration mode and three point in third length extensional vibration mode. One is the middle of input and the other is middle of output parts. And output voltage was inversely decreased by increasing number of output layers. Also The third mode type is shown higher power transition ratio than the second mode type.

  • This study aims to perform damage identification for Da-Sheng-Guan (DSG) high-speed railway truss arch bridge using fuzzy clustering analysis. Firstly, structural health monitoring (SHM) system is established for the DSG Bridge. Long-term field monitoring strain data in 8 different cases caused by high-speed trains are taken as classification reference for other unknown cases. And finite element model (FEM) of DSG Bridge is established to simulate damage cases of the bridge. Then, effectiveness of one fuzzy clustering analysis method named transitive closure method and FEM results are verified using the monitoring strain data. Three standardization methods at the first step of fuzzy clustering transitive closure method are compared: extreme difference method, maximum method and non-standard method. At last, the fuzzy clustering method is taken to identify damage with different degrees and different locations. The results show that: non-standard method is the best for the data with the same dimension at the first step of fuzzy clustering analysis. Clustering result is the best when 8 carriage and 16 carriage train in the same line are in a category. For DSG Bridge, the damage is identified when the strain mode change caused by damage is more significant than it caused by different carriages. The corresponding critical damage degree called damage threshold varies with damage location and reduces with the increase of damage locations.
