  • This paper studies a class of in-parallel manipulators with special geometry where the forward displacement analysis problem can be solved easier than the fully parallel manipulators. Three horizontal links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs(Degrees of Freedom), which are one degree of orientational freedom and two degrees of translatory freedom. Three vertical links of this mechanism provide 3DOFs, which are two degrees of orientational freedom and one degree of translatory freedom. The main advantages of this manipulator, compared with the Stewart platform type, are the capability to produce pure rotation and to predict the motion of the moving platform easily. Since this manipulator has simple kinematic characteristics compared with the Stewart platform, controlling in real-time is possible due to less computational burden. The purpose of this investigation is to develope an analytical method and systematic method to analyze the basic kinematics of the manipulator. The basic kinematic equations of the manipulator are derived and simulation is carried out to show the performance of the mechanism.

  • Existing moving robots has several kinds of moving method; using wheel, jointed leg structure and so on. Wheel type can be operated by DC motor so it is simple and efficient. However, it is not appropriate to pass irregular terrain and obstacle. Leg structure type has an advantage in those cases. Generally, Leg structure is operated by several servo motors attached to each joint. It makes a robot heavier and more complicate due to increase of the degree of freedom. However, by using Theo Jansen Mechanism, one (or more) leg have only single-degree of freedom and can be operated by only one DC motor. So leg structure using Theo Jansen Mechanism will be good choice if robots have to be mass-produced. This paper describes the following a walking robot designed and produced based on Theo Jansen Mechanism, simulating process of Theo Jansen leg structure using Edison m.Sketch and how to solve several of discovered problem of the robot.

  • Ductility capacity is comprehensively studied for steel moment-resisting frames. Local, story and global ductility are being considered. An appropriate measure of global ductility is suggested. A time domain nonlinear seismic response algorithm is used to evaluate several definitions of ductility. It is observed that for one-story structures, resembling a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system, all definitions of global ductility seem to give reasonable values. However, for complex structures it may give unreasonable values. It indicates that using SDOF systems to estimate the ductility capacity may be a very crude approximation. For multi degree of freedom (MDOF) systems some definitions may not be appropriate, even though they are used in the profession. Results also indicate that the structural global ductility of 4, commonly used for moment-resisting steel frames, cannot be justified based on this study. The ductility of MDOF structural systems and the corresponding equivalent SDOF systems is studied. The global ductility values are very different for the two representations. The ductility reduction factor $F_{\mu}$ is also estimated. For a given frame, the values of the $F_{\mu}$ parameter significantly vary from one earthquake to another, even though the maximum deformation in terms of the interstory displacement is roughly the same for all earthquakes. This is because the $F_{\mu}$ values depend on the amount of dissipated energy, which in turn depends on the plastic mechanism, formed in the frames as well as on the loading, unloading and reloading process at plastic hinges. Based on the results of this study, the Newmark and Hall procedure to relate the ductility reduction factor and the ductility parameter cannot be justified. The reason for this is that SDOF systems were used to model real frames in these studies. Higher mode effects were neglected and energy dissipation was not explicitly considered. In addition, it is not possible to observe the formation of a collapse mechanism in the equivalent SDOF systems. Therefore, the ductility parameter and the force reduction factor should be estimated by using the MDOF representation.

  • In automotive industries, one of major issues is the shifting shock, which is brought out when two clutches are engaged in an automatic transmission. The engagement and disengagement if two clutches means the variation of the D.O.F(degree of freedom) of system. Therefore to analyze the shifting performance, the variation of D.O.F should be considered in detail. Generally, the programs for analyzing the shifting transients have been developed as the problem-dependent codes because the artificial maris were usually used to indicate the change of shifting phase. To develop a software applicable to a general mechanism of transmissions, a self-determining algorithm of D.O.F must be applied. Through the experiences for the last several years, a generalized analysis software of shifting mechanism(so called by POTAS-MSM Version 2.0) has been developed. In this study, some major ideas of the software and the concept for the analysis of shifting characteristics are presented. In addition to that, this paper shows how to self -determine D.O.F of he multi-slipping systems using the stick-slip criterion on a single slipping mechanism. By using this software, the shifting characteristics of a vehicle are analyzed and compared with the experimental results.

  • This article investigates kinematic characteristics of a Sch$\ddot{o}$nflies motion generator which represents a mechanism having translational three Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) and rotational one-DOF motion about a fixed axis. The mechanism consists of the base plate and the moving plate, and four identical limbs connecting them. Each limb employs two revolute joints (RR), one parallelogram (Pa), and two revolute joints (RR) from the base plate to the moving plate. The mechanism is driven by four actuators which are placed on the base plate to minimize dynamic loads. It is shown through simulations that the mechanism can be designed to secure large dexterous workspace and thus has very high potential for actual applications such as haptic devices and high-speed requiring tasks such as pick-and-place operations, riveting, screwing tasks, etc.

  • In this paper, a forearm Mechanism design inspired by ligamentous structure of the human body is proposed. The proposed mechanism consists of four rigid bodies and fourteen wires without any mechanical joints. Actually, the mechanism is based on the concept of the tensegrity structure. Therefore, the proposed mechanism has inherently compliant characteristics due to the flexibility of the wires composing the structure. Rigid bodies and wires of the mechanism mimic bones and major ligaments in the forearm of the human. The proposed mechanism is classified as one of the interconnected hybrid flexure systems. The analysis method of the degree of freedom (DOF) of the proposed mechanism is also introduced through analyzing technique of the interconnected hybrid flexure systems, in this paper. Ultimately, the proposed mechanism, whose structure is complicated with rigid bodies and wires, mathematically drives that it has 3-DOFs.

  • Mechanisms of the robot system should be developed according to the task. In this study, we propose improving adaptability of the robot mechanism with the modularized joint mechanism. Adaptability is the measure of the system ability to cope with change or uncertainty. Modular type joint has been widely used in development of various robots including reconfigurable robots. To build robotic systems more flexibly and quickly with low costs of manufacturing and maintenance, we have designed a modular type joint with one degree of freedom for general purpose. This module is designed to be compact, light-weight and self-controlled. In this design, we consider the kinematics and dynamics properties of the modular type joint.

  • This paper presents, the design of a latch mechanism for wafer containers in a standard mechanical interface environment. For an integrated circuits fabrication factory, the standard mechanical interfaced wafer container is an effective tool to prevent wafers from particle contamination during wafer storage, transporting or transferring. The latch mechanism inside the container door is used to latch and further seal the wafer container for safety and air quality. Kinematic characteristics of the mechanism are established by analyzing the required functions of the mechanisms. Based on these characteristics, a methodology for enumerating feasible latch mechanisms is developed. New mechanisms with one degree-of-freedom and up to five links are generated. An optimum design is also identified with respect to the criteria pertinent to the application. The computer-aided simulation is also built to verify the design.

  • Analysis method for mechanism has been fully developed and relatively easy work compared to mechanism synthesis. Developing or creating a new mechanism for a given task is a creative job. In this case, a few theories are developed such as type synthesis. However, these methods are not sufficient for mechanism designers to sufficientely take into account alternative mechanism models during the initial phase of the mechanism design process. This paper presents the configuration design of mechanisms using graphical representation in the conceptual design stage. In this stage of kinematic synthesis, one needs to select mechanisms and configure appropriately to realize the desired motion of a machine. Graphical representation of mechanisms is proposed in this paper to help a designer to be highly creative and efficient in the initial design process. It is possible to easily design and analyze the mechanism of a machine by using this method.
