This study was undertaken to investigate effects of 'Oyo-Tang' on the respiratory system. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. Antihistamine and relaxed dialating actions were recognized on the extracted ileum and serial broncheal samples in guinea-pigs. 2. Mild hypertensive action was recognized on the carotid artery in rabbits. 3. Antitussive action was noted on mechanically irritated coughs in dogs and cats. In connection with the results of these studies, effects based on the Oriental medical references were consistent with the actual experimental results. It was considered that effective application of 'Oyo-Tang' for the treatment of cough and asthma could be justified.
Objectives This paper investigates the origins, changes, and the constructive principles of Hyungbangjihwang-tang(荊防地黃湯). Methods Hyungbangjihwang-tang and other related prescriptions were analyzed in terms of their pathological indications, based on previous literature including 『Gogeumuigam(古今醫鑑)』, 『Sanghannon(傷寒論)』, 『Uihagjeongjeon(醫學正傳)』, 『Donguisusebowon·Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元·四象草本卷)』, 『Donguisusebowon·Gabobon(東醫壽世保元·甲午本)』, 『Donguisusebowon·Sinchukbon(東醫壽世保元·辛丑本)』. Results and Conclusions The origins of Hyungbangjihwang-tang can be seen in three sections depending on the classification of medicinal herbs. Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq.(荊芥), Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischk.(防風), Notopterygium incisum Ting(羌活), Aralia cordata Thunb.(獨活), and Plantago asiatica L.(車前子) originated from Hyungbangpaedok-san(荊防敗毒散) included in 『Gogeumuigam』. Poria cocos Wolf.(茯苓) and Alisma canaliculatum(澤瀉) originated from Ohryoung-san(五苓散) included in 『Sanghannon』. Rehmannia glutinosa for hueichingensis(熟地黃) and Cornus officinalis S. et Z.(⼭茱萸) originated from Yukmijihwang-tang(六味地黃湯) included in 『Uihagjeongjeon』. Hyungbangpaedok-san was transformed into "Paedok-san" in 『Chobongwon(草本卷)』, Hyungbangpaedok-san in the 『Gabobon(甲午本)』 and 『Sinchukbon(辛丑本)』. Yukmijihwang-tang was mentioned as a Soyangin medicine in the 『Chobongwon』 and was later transformed into a Suhwagije-tang(水火旣濟湯) in 『Gabobon』. The meaning of Yukmijihwang-tang inherited in 『Sinchukbon』 as Dokhwaljihwang-tang and Hyungbangjihwang-tang. The medicinal herbs in Hyungbangjihwang-tang can be categorized in three sections by their functions, Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq., Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischk., Notopterygium incisum Ting, Aralia cordata Thunb., and Plantago asiatica L. scatter the Pyohan(表寒) and make the Pyoeum(表陰) drop. Poria cocos Wolf.(茯苓) and Alisma canaliculatum(澤瀉) make the Pyoeum(表陰) drop through Lee-su(利水). Rehmannia glutinosa for hueichingensis(熟地黃) and Cornus officinalis S. et Z.(⼭茱萸) tonify Shin-won(腎元). The each principles of medicinal herbs corresponds to the stage of the "Cold-related Diarrhea in Soyangin Spleen Cold-based Exterior Cold disease(少陽人 脾受寒表寒病 亡陰病 身寒腹痛亡陰證)".
Objectives: The purpose of this case report is to describe the efficacy of Saenggan-tang-gagam treatment in a patient with immune-tolerant chronic hepatitis B who converted to the immune active phase during hospitalization for Intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods: A 61-year-old male patient with chronic hepatitis B was hospitalized from July 21, 2016 to October 24, 2016. On September 5, the patient showed fatigue and dyspepsia, and his urine was dark. These symptoms were accompanied by a dramatic elevation of aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels. Saenggan-tang-gagam was administered three times a day until the patient was discharged from the hospital. Results: After the Saenggan-tang-gagam treatment, AST and ALP levels decreased significantly, below the upper limit level. In addition, the levels of ALT and GG were significantly decreased. In addition, the fatigue, dyspepsia, and dark urine induced by hepatitis improved after the Saenggan-tang-gagam treatment. Conclusion: This case report suggests that traditional Korean medicine has a beneficial effect on the immune active phase of chronic hepatitis B.
Objective : The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of the acute stroke patient who took Chungpyesagan-tang, and provide the basis of Chungpyesagan-tang prescription. Method : We studied hospitalized patients within 4 weeks after their occur who were admitted at Kyunghee University Oriental Medical Center, Kyunghee University East-West Neo Medical Center, Kyungwon University Oriental Medical Center, Semyung University Oriental Medical Center from February 2010 to July 2010. We compared the general characteristics of acute stroke patient with herbal medicine. Result : The patient who took Chungpyesagan-tang showed significant difference for age, family history of hypertension, ALT, coffee drinking, fastfood eating, stool, Oriental Medical Diagnosis. Conclusion : The above result show that Chungpyesagan-tang can be prescribed to stroke patient whose stool is hard, whose Oriental Medical Diagnosis is fever type. Further studies will be needed to better understand the difference between Chungpyesagan-tang group and Other herbal medicine among acute stroke patients.
Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) has been developed as prescriptions for the Soyeumin constitution. The hepatoprotective effect of the water extract of Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) was investigated against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatic damage. A single intra-peritoneal injection of CCl4 produced liver damage in rats as manifested by the significant rise of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) in serum as compared to those of untreated normal group. Pretreatments of rats with Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) 500 mg/kg for 7 days) were significantly reduced AST, ALT, and ALP levels compared with CCl4-treated control group. Treatment of rats with CCl4 led to significantly increase in lipid peroxidation and significantly decrease in cytochrome P450 and P450 reductase. The oral administration of Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) water extract significantly inhibited the accumulation of microsomal thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and increased the cytochrome P450 and P450 reductase activity. All these biochemical alterations resulting from CCl4 administration were inhibited by the pretreatment with Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SG1) extract. These results suggest that Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) water extract can be useful as a hepatoprotective agent. And the effect of NO modulation by NO synthesis or precursors, and Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang (SGT) water extract was researched on chronic liver damage induced by CCl4 administration. It was observed that endogenous NO protected the liver from lipid peroxidation, fibrosis, and damage. Osuyubujaijung-tang(OBT) and Sipyimiguanjung-tang(SGT) water extract showed the hepatoprotective effect on the chronic liver cirrhosis model and relationship with NO modulation.
Chichul-Tang, a combined preparation of crude drug, which was composed of Atractylodis Rhizoma alba and Ponciri Fructus, has been used widely for digestive disorder. Each herb extract of Atractylodis Rhizoma and Ponciri Fructus, the mixture of both herb extracts were examined for the effects on isolated smooth muscle, intestinal propulsion, anti-cathartic action and gastric secretion. The results were summarized as follows: Chichul-Tang showed the inhibitory effects of the convulsion of smooth muscle. Anti-cathartic effect was shown and gastric secretion was inhibited.
Objectives : Obesity is a metabolic disease resulted from various causes including nutritional disproportion, hormonal imbalance, and hypothalamic nuclei disorder. Samhwang-tang(Sanhuang-tang, SHT) is composed of 5 herbs (Ephedrae Herba, Scutellariae Radix, Typhae pollen, Acori Rhizoma and Ansu Semen) and is frequently used for obese patients. This study investigated anti-obesity effects of SHT on the rats. Methods : Obesity was induced by high fat diet (HFD), monosodium L-glutamate injection (MSG) and ovariectomy (OVX) in the Sprague-Dawley rats. Water extract of SHT was treated for 2 weeks, then changes of body weight gain and epididymal fat cell size were measured. In OVX animals, c-Fos and neuropeptide Y (NPY) expressions in hypothalamic nuclei were observed with immunohistochemistry. Results : SHT treatment demonstrated significant decrease of body weight gain in obesity induced by HFD and OVX, but not in obesity induced by MSG. SHT treatment demonstrated significant decrease of fat cell size in obesity induced by HFD, but not in obesity induced by MSG. On c-Fos and NPY expressions in hypothalamic nuclei, SHT treatment resulted significant decrease of immuno-reactivity of c-Fos and NPY in obesity induced by OVX. Conclusions : These results suggest that SHT has a weight loss effect against obesity induced by nutritional disproportion of diet intake and hormonal imbalance, especially without central nervous system disorder.
Experimental studies were conducted to investigate for the effect of Tongkyu-tang on analgesic, antipyretic, sedative, anti-inflammatory, isolated ileum and anti-histamine actions. Tongkyu-Tang was composed of sixteen crude drugs including Astragali Radix, which has been used for the treatment of common cold, headache, rhinitis, nasal obstruction, rhincospasm, etc. The following results have been obtained; analgesic and antipyretic actions were obtained. Prolonged action against the hypnotic duration of pentobarbital were significantly noted in mice. Anti-inflammatory effects in the paw edema induced by 1% carrageenin and 1% dextran were significantly shown in rats. Spontaneous motilities of isolated ileum of mice were strongly suppressed, and contractions of isolated ileum of mice and guinea-pigs induced by acetylcholine chloride, barium chloride and histamine were remarkably inhibited. Antihistamine actions were noted. Considering the above experimental results, it is suggested that effects of Tongkyu-tang based on the Oriental Medical References were similarly consistent with the actual experimental results.
Objectives: This study investigated the effects of Choweseuncheung-tang (CWSCT, Tiaoweishengqing-tang) on body weight, serum lipid level, serum insulin level and serum leptin level in high-fat-diet-induced obese mice. Methods: Four-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into three groups (7 mice in each group), including a normal group, control group, and CWSCT group. The normal group was fed a general diet, but the other groups were fed a high fat diet. The CWSCT group was administered CWSCT for 4 weeks. Animals were weighted weekly and blood lipids, insulin and leptin levels were measured after 4 weeks. Results: The results were as follows. 1. In the CWSCT group, compared with the control, body weight gain was significantly inhibited. 2. In the CWSCT group, compared with the control, the level of HDL cholesterol in serum increased significantly. 3. In the CWSCT group, compared with the control, the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol decreased significantly. 4. In the CWSCT group, compared with the control, the elevation of serum leptin level was significantly inhibited. Conclusions: Choweseuncheung-tang treatment has inhibitory effects on obesity and hyperlipidemia in high-fat-dietinduced obese mice.
