Networks-on-chip (NoC) is emerging as a key technology to overcome severe bus traffics in ever-increasing complexity of the Multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC); however traditional electrical interconnection based NoC architecture would be faced with technical limits of bandwidth and power consumptions in the near future. In order to cope with these problems, a hybrid optical NoC architecture which use both electrical interconnects and optical interconnects together, has been widely investigated. In the hybrid optical NoCs, wormhole switching and simple deterministic X-Y routing are used for the electrical interconnections which is responsible for the setup of routing path and optical router to transmit optical data through optical interconnects. Optical NoC uses circuit switching method to send payload data by preset paths and routers. However, conventional hybrid optical NoC has a drawback that concurrent transmissions are not allowed. Therefore, performance improvement is limited. In this paper, we propose a new routing algorithm that uses circuit switching and adaptive algorithm for the electrical interconnections to transmit data using multiple paths simultaneously. We also propose an efficient method to prevent livelock problems. Experimental results show up to 60% throughput improvement compared to a hybrid optical NoC and 65% power reduction compared to an electrical NoC.
The floorplanning problem is an essential design step in VLSI layout design and it is how to place rectangular modules as density as possible. And then, as the DSM advances, the VLSI chip becomes more congested even though more metal layers are used for routing. Usually, a VLSI chip includes several buses. As design increases in complexity, bus routing becomes a heavy task. To ease bus routing and avoid unnecessary iterations in physical design, we need to consider bus planning in early floorplanning stage. In this paper, we propose a floorplanning method for topological constraint consisting of bus constraint and memory constraint. The proposed algorithms based on Genetic Algorithm(GA) is adopted a sequence pair. For selection control, new objective functions are introduced for topological constraint. Studies on floor planning and cell placement have been reported as being applications of GA to the LSI layout problem. However, no studies have ever seen the effect of applying GA in consideration of topological constraint. Experimental results show improvement of bus and memory constraint.

Today's multi-core technology rapidly increases with more and more Intellectual Property cores on a single chip. Network-on-Chip (NoC) is an emerging communication network design for SoC. For efficient on-chip communication, routing algorithms plays an important role. This paper proposes a novel multicast routing technique entitled as Docket NoC (Dt-NoC), which eliminates the need of routing tables for faster communication. This technique reduces the latency and computing power of NoC. This work uses a CURVE restriction based algorithm to restrict few CURVES during the communication between source and destination and it prevents the network from deadlock and livelock. Performance evaluation is done by utilizing cycle accurate RTL simulator and by Cadence TSMC 18 nm technology. Experimental results show that the Dt-NoC architecture consumes power approximately 33.75% 27.65% and 24.85% less than Baseline XY, EnA, OEnA architectures respectively. Dt-NoC performs good as compared to other routing algorithms such as baseline XY, EnA, OEnA distributed architecture in terms of latency, power and throughput.
A high performance routing switch is an essential device to either the high performance parallel processing or communication networks that handle multimedia transfer systems such as VOD. The high performance routing chip called STC104 is a typical example in the technical aspect which has 32 bidirectional links of 100Mbps transfer sped. It has exploited new technologies, such as wormhole routing, interval labeling, and adaptive routing method. The high speed router has been applied into some parallel processing system as a single chip. However, its performance over the various interconnection networks with multiple routing chips has not been studied. In this paper, the strucrtures and characteristics of the STC104 have been investigated in order to evaluate the high speed router. Various topology of the STC104, such as meshes, torus, and N-cube are defined and constructed. Algorithms of packet transmission have been proposed based on the interval labeling and the group adaptive routing method implemented in the interconnected network. Multicast algorithms, which are often requited to the processor networks and broadcasting systems, modified from U-mesh and U-torus algorithms have also been proposed overcoming the problems of point-to-point communication.

One of the big differences between Network-on-Chip (NoC) and the existing parallel processing system based on an off-chip network is that data packet routing is performed using a centralized control scheme. In such an environment, the best-effort packet routing problem becomes a real-time assignment problem in which data packet arriving time and processing time is the cost. In this paper, the Hungarian algorithm, a representative computational complexity reduction algorithm for the linear algebraic equation of the allocation problem, is implemented in the form of a hardware accelerator. As a result of logic synthesis using the TSMC 0.18um standard cell library, the area of the circuit designed through case analysis for the cost distribution is reduced by about 16% and the propagation delay of it is reduced by about 52%, compared to the circuit implementing the original operation sequence of the Hungarian algorithm.

Recently, network model inspired by social insect behavior attracts the public attention. The AntNet is an adaptive and distributed routing algorithm using mobile agents, called ants, that mimic the activities of social insect. In this paper. we present a new hardware architecture to realize an AntNet-based routing in practical system on a chip application. The modified AntNet algorithm for hardware implementation is compared with the original algorithm on the various traffic patterns and topologies. Implementation results show that the proposed architecture is suitable and efficient to realize adaptive routing based on the AntNet.

In this paper, a system of automatic placement and routing for gate array layout design is proposed. In the placement stage, the circuit is partitioned and using the concept of min-cut slicing, and each partitioned module is placed, so that the routing density over the entire chip be uniformized and the total wiring length be minimized. In the global routing stage, the concept of the probabilistic routing density is introduced to unify the wiring congestions in each channel. In the detailed routing stage, the multi-terminal nets are partitioned into the two-terminal nets. The ordered channel graph is proposed which implies the vertical and the horizontal constranint graphs simultaneously. And using the ordered channel graph, the proposed routing algorithm assigns the signal nets to the tracks. Also the proposed placement and routing algorithms are implimented on IBM/PC-AT to construct PC-level gate array layout system.

An ubiquitous sensor network (USN) system to monitor the bio information and the emergency of the elderly in the silver town is presented. The USN system consists of the sensor node platforms based on MCU of Atmage128L and RF Chip of CC2420 satisfying IEEE 802.15.4, which includes the bios sensor module such as the electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor and the temperature sensor. Additionally, when an emergency of the elderly is occurred in the silver town, the routing algorithm suitable to find and inform the location of the elderly is proposed, and the proposed routing algorithm is applied to the USN. To collect and manage the ECG data at the PC connected to the sink node, LabView software is used. The bio information and the emergency of the elderly can also be monitored at the client PC by TCP/IP networks in the USN system.
In this paper, we propose a novel ant colony optimization (ACO)-based test scheduling method for testing network-on-chip (NoC)-based systems-on-chip (SoCs), on the assumption that the test platform, including specific methods and configurations such as test packet routing, generation, and absorption, is installed. The ACO metaheuristic model, inspired by the ant's foraging behavior, can autonomously find better results by exploring more solution space. The proposed method efficiently combines the rectangle packing method with ACO and improves the scheduling results by dynamically choosing the test-access-mechanism widths for cores and changing the testing orders. The power dissipation and variable test clock mode are also considered. Experimental results using ITC'02 benchmark circuits show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently reduce overall test time. Moreover, the computation time of the algorithm is less than a few seconds in most cases.
Networks-on-Chip (NoC) is emerging as a practical development platform for future systems-on-chip products. We propose an energy-efficient static algorithm which optimizes the energy consumption of task communications in NoCs with voltage scalable links. In order to find optimal link speeds, the proposed algorithm (based on a genetic formulation) globally explores the design space of NoC-based systems, including network topology, task assignment, tile mapping, routing path allocation, task scheduling and link speed assignment. Experimental results show that the proposed design technique can reduce energy consumption by 28% on average compared with existing techniques.
